Alien

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) As a rule, I don't touch anything with any relation to the horror genre, but my new scratch off poster required this of me so here we are. But I've actually had a interest in this movie for a long time, knowing the influence it's had on movies since it came out 40 years ago. And you know what? I really liked it! It's definitely more thriller than horror, going for slow burning, built up tension rather than cheap scares and gory deaths (though there are a bit of both). I loved a lot about this movie. My first impression was that it looks fantastic for a movie of this age, similar to the old Star Wars films, but it also never tries to show off what would now be dated special effects, but rather makes timely cuts before it can show its age and break the immersion. I also liked how it told a small, tight story with only a handful of cast members and only one main location. It didn't feel like a sci-fi block buster, but felt smart...

the girl who drank the moon - Kelly Barnhill

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Evelyn) this book was one of the best books I've ever read(other than harry potter of coarse)and a few parts were pretty sad; but it was still great! It was about a girl who(if you haven't already guessed) drank the moon. Don't ask me who my favorite character was because I don't have one(I have lots.)

The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) I could make a list of my top ten movie moments of all time, and they would probably all be from this movie. Just a fantastic mega-epic blockbuster, with action scenes that hold up even on the 100th rewatch. The ending always makes me wan to cry, and if you tell me the movie is too long I will fight you. The Arwen plotline is very strange in a way I did not remember. Her life is tied to Sauron's fate? Why? But other than that I am always in awe at how incredible them pulling this movie off is. Perfect music. Perfect casting. Perfect conclusion of the series. Just perfect. One thing I hate is how I can't watch these movies without thinking of the Hobbit movies. How did the geniuses who made this also make those monstrosities? I wish I could completely forget those movies, because it is just a frustrating thing that always comes to mind during this masterpiece. Best movie of all time.

Soul

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) I loved this movie! Kind of like a more existential version of Inside Out, this movie was thoughtful and creative throughout, subverting where I thought it might go at every turn. The musical score was noticeably incredible as well, combining jazz music with this futuristic other-worldly sound. In classic Pixar fashion, this one had me feeling emotional in ways I don't often feel watching a movie. It had me thinking about the snapshots that have formed my life, what my sparks are, and what my purpose is. I mean, if a movie has you asking these questions, mission accomplished. I really just loved the world they built. Their idea of how souls form and what happens when you die and the creatures that live in this reality are just so creative and interesting. The interaction between our world and that world is also pretty well thought out, and provides some really great moments throughout. I did have a hard time imagining a child loving this mov...

It’s A Wonderful Life

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) Alright in my last review I said I could never give a Christmas movie more than an 8, but I was wrong. This is a true classic that really holds up. For whatever reason I didn't love it on the first watches, probably because we usually watch it at midnight on Christmas Eve and I fall asleep. We started it earlier this year and what a treat. It is a very heartfelt story, and his little micro-explanations on how the economy of their town works are so wholesome. I laughed a bunch, and was moved by the ending. The age progression throughout is a bit hard to track, but Jimmy Stewart playing a guy who constantly does the right thing and is never rewarded for it is pretty amazing to watch, and it makes his eventual break understandable. I also love the framing device, a guardian angle watching his life so that he can show up for him when he needs him most. The end has some Christmas Carol vibes as well, given what the main character goes through. Oh and...

Wonder Woman 1984

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) I don't even know how to review this one. I was set on watching it because - Wonder Woman - but it was a strange one. I'm having a hard time coming up with good things to say about it but I also didn't come away from it thinking I hated it. It seemed a bit disjointed and unbelievable at times and I really didn't enjoy the story line but I somehow still have good feelings associated with it?? You figure it out.

The Beautiful Mystery - Louise Penny

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) This was only my second Inspector Gamache book and I remembered why I enjoyed the previous one so much! He is one of my all-time favourite characters - he's so well-written! I thought this book had a bit of a disappointing ending since I didn't want the person who was found guilty to be who it was and I *truly* didn't want Gamache's colleague, Beauvoir, to end his story in this book the way it did. It was heart-breaking. I thoroughly enjoyed learning more about the Catholic Monastery life and specifically Gregorian Chants. I didn't think this would be something I'd love to read about but I was certainly wrong. She did an amazing job drawing me in.

The Crown (Season 4)

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) This show just continues to be an absolute *masterpiece*! The acting, the scenery, the visuals, it's all so goooood. I had to deduct half a star because Prince Charles drove me insane - but also, I felt so incredibly bad for him. It showed me again how awful it is to make celebrities of people, and how unhealthy it can be. I was also pretty surprised by who my favourite character turned out to be this season. In the past seasons (mostly the previous actor) I loathed Phillip but this season he was easily my favourite of the cast because of his endearing love and support for his Queen. Allll the heart eyes. And Margaret Thatcher. It made me want to research the heck out of her. The actor was *brilliant* and I'm dying to know how true to life they kept. She seemed an incredibly interesting personality.

Evermore - Taylor Swift

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) What’s better than a surprise Taylor album during a pandemic? A second surprise Taylor album during a pandemic! This album definitely feels like a continuation of Folklore, but has its own unique elements as well. I feel like Folklore is more cohesive and ethereal, whereas Evermore experiments a bit more and, in my opinion, has better standalone songs. It doesn’t flow as well as Folklore but it’s still amazing. This album has a bit of everything, country, folk, pop, folk rock; it’s so good and I haven’t stopped listening to it. Willow, no body no crime, champagne problems, tolerate it, and evermore are my favourite tracks. I saw a video of someone overlaying the song champagne problems to a few scenes from Little Women and I balled.

Soul

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This movie was incredible. It had me in my feels the entire time. There were so many precious moments that made my eyes mist over and I just felt so inspired watching it. It was funny too! I also thought a bit unpredictable which was cool. The music was awesome and the characters were all amazing. I left this movie deeply wondering about my purpose, as I do from time to time. I was not expecting to have an existential crises but it was kinda welcome. Definitely worth the watch.

Horizon Zero Dawn

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) On the surface, Horizon has essentially everything I could ever want in a video game. The gameplay is fun and the combat is unique enough to rise above a lot of the competition. It has both a cool story but also an interesting open world to explore. It features one of the greatest sci-fi worlds with deep lore that I've ever come across in any form of media. Yet somehow this game comes just short of the sum of all those parts. This game features a universe where humanity is in a primitive, tribal state, yet the story clearly takes place in the future as you can see the ancient remains of modern technology. This setting also essentially sets up the plot as you are on a mission to discover the secrets of the past, and I must say that the mystery is terrific and has an amazing payoff. You play as Aloy who is adventurous, rugged and overall pretty badass, but who I also found a little vanilla as she never shows any personality traits that make her...

Tuesday Mooney Talks to Ghosts - Kate Rucculia

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) A fun read with some mystery and adventure. I didn't really love the supernatural element to it and didn't relate personally to any of the characters, but I was intrigued and enjoyed watching everything unfold.

Wonder Woman 1984

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Will) I think I'll say this movie was mostly enjoyable, but not particularly good. It was fun at times, a bit weird at others, and not super serious for the most part. Gal Gadot is still magnetic as Wonder Woman, and her new suit is super badass. Despite it's flaws, still worth seeing.

Rhythm of War (Stormlight Archive 4) - Brandon Sanderson

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Will) I didn't think this book was particularly good, and combined with my really high expectations/hopes, I came out disappointed. There were some really good stuff - major character development, significant storyline progress, etc - but it seemed like all that was in the last 20% of the book. I'm super invested in the series, and there's some kind of ending to the current storyline coming in book five so I'm definitely going to keep reading, but there were a few major negatives to this particular book: One of the strengths of Brandon's writing is his ability to create magical systems that make sense. Well, he went a little overboard in this book, getting insanely deep into intricacies that I just couldn't make myself care about. It's nice that he thought about this kind of stuff, but I just didn't need the 200+ pages on it. A couple key characters spent the whole book dealing with the same problems they've been deali...

To Sleep in a Sea of Stars - Christopher Paolini

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Will) The author of Eragon decided to write a sci-fi, and it's pretty good! This is a classic "first encounter with aliens" story that kept me riveted from beginning to end. If you like the genre, you'll enjoy this one.

Dune Messiah - Frank Herbert

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is the second book in the Dune series. It follows Paul as Emperor of the world and everything that comes along with that. I thought this book was written really well and loved the pacing. It was a slow burn and yet climactic all at once. The world Herbert has built is incredible. So many interesting characters and the politics are deep; the only downside to this is I had a hard time following where he was going. A lot of the politics went right over my head. I know a lot of people say this is the weakest of the 6 written by Frank but I still enjoyed it! The philosophical aspect made me think a lot and I think Paul Atreides is an incredible character.

Plastic Hearts - Miley Cyrus

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) If there is one thing Miley is good at, it’s reinventing herself, and here she’s done it again. This album is definitely more rock genre, but it doesn’t stray too far from pop. She called in some big names for this album, such as Stevie Nicks, Joan Jet, Billy Idol, and Dua Lipa. As a whole I thought this album was decent, but nothing special. I think she’s found where she fits, because she was never a pop girl, but still has that country background from her father. Somehow this rock sound just works. Plastic hearts, Prisoner, and Edge of Midnight stand out to me

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) Talk about a classic! I hadn’t seen this one in years but it is just so damn funny. The slapstick humour is just up my alley and the characters are all so outlandish but it works. I love how in the end the main message is that money solves everything, and I stand by that

Over the Moon

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is animated movie about a Chinese girl who meets a moon goddess to save her family. Super cool animation in this one. It wasn’t Disney or Pixar or any of the big names so it felt different and unique. The Chinese culture of it was also really cool. The landscape and the food, plus the Chinese characters felt new and exciting to see. Maggie and Becky, you guys should definitely watch it!

Selma

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) I’ve watched a bunch of random movies over the last week or so, and I’m just gonna quickly catalog them. You should read Joe’s review for a more in depth analysis but this was incredible. It was a re-watch for me but I had a new appreciation since reading the book. Highly recommend

Soul

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This is the best movie I’ve seen in 2020. It was SO GOOD. So much genuine wit and humour, I laughed out loud many times! It’s an absolutely heartwarming story, and I am so glad we spent a part of our Christmas Day watching this. It’s the story of an aspiring jazz musician turned middle school band teacher struggling to find his purpose and live out his dreams. It’s got an uplifting message that left me genuinely inspired! In typical Pixar fashion, the movie was surprising, hilarious, super clever, and fun with incredible music and powerful moments. Yes I cried and was moved and it all just blew me away. WATCH THIS MOVIE TODAY

Sound of Metal

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This movie was a very moving experience. It beautifully puts you in the place of someone experiencing hearing loss, and all the loss that comes along with that. I really do think it’s one of the best things Tim and I watched this year.

The Mandalorian (Season 2)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I mean I didn’t like it as much as I liked the first season. The first few episodes were not as engaging, and I had a hard time staying invested with those first few storylines (I literally still can’t get over Baby Yoda eating that lizard lady’s egg babies and it’s supposed to be cute or something!?!?!) Regardless, it really got good. I’m not a true Star Wars fan but I appreciated the epic appearances, battles and intersection of stories. I still would do just about anything for Baby Yoda. I still often would watch and say “where’s baby yoda? Where is he? Why did they leave him there? Where’s the baby? KEEP HIM WITH YOU YOU IDIOT!” and other exclamations along those lines. It was just the a good time! Plus it’s so fun to watch something your watch partner is SO excited to watch every week. That kinda anticipation is contagious.

The Santa Clause

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Honestly better than I remembered! I laughed out loud a few times, and the nostalgia associated with the movie really does make it even better. A super clever story concept again—who comes up with this stuff!? I wouldn’t be mad to make this a part of our regular Christmas rotation.

Elf

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) The fact that Tim thinks The Santa Clause is better than this movie boggles my mind. This is a true Christmas classic! Lots of genuine humour, wit and cheery Christmas feels. Whoever came up with this storyline is a genius, and whoever cast Will Ferrell is even more of a genius. This movie is just a good time every Christmas!

It’s A Wonderful Life

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This movie is long, and I honestly wasn’t really feeling it this year. Man, am I glad my sister forced us back into this Christmas Eve tradition. This movie is incredible. Heartwarming, funny, charming and meaningful. It’s a powerful reminder of how our lives touch the lives of others, often in ways we can’t fathom. James Stewart is amazing, everyone in this movie is amazing, and it’s truly hard to fathom that this film was made in 1946 and still holds up SO WELL. I think all this reviewing has helped me realize something about myself—I love movies that make me feel something. This film certainly ticks that box and I’ve never made it through a viewing without crying my eyes out at the final scene. A truly perfect Christmas movie. Let the tradition continue.

Klaus

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) It's a little late to make a Christmas movie recommendation, but I thought this one was incredible. I loved the animation style (and am always happy to see that hand animation isn't dead) and the overall aesthetic was great. It was funny, it was incredibly touching, and I thought also very clever. This might honestly be my favorite Christmas movie now. It was the perfect experience for Christmas Eve, and I had the thought that I kinda can't wait to watch it again in future Christmases.

Elf

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) A true Christmas classic at this point. What else is there to say about this movie? Lots of laughs, and I will never not be grossed out by his spaghetti meals. Memorable soundtrack as well. I did think the final 20 minutes were pretty dull, and it kind of turns into a weird chase scene. I forgot that Christmas spirit is what saves the day, which is kind of lame since it isn't even Buddy who inspires the people to sing. Not sure I could give any Christmas movie more than an 8, and the boring ending knocks this one down a star.

Super Mario Sunshine

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) After my disappointing time with Mario 64, really any functional video game would have been a pleasant change. Sunshine is certainly functional, and I thought even pretty good! I really couldn't believe this was a game from 2002. It looks phenomenal, especially on the switch. It still has some mechanical issues, like the camera still being somewhat limited, but nothing felt broken or unplayable. The game itself has so much charm. Winter of 2020 is a wasteland, but in contrast this game is bright and happy and tropical. But did I enjoy it? Ah, sometimes. This game had some ridiculous difficulty spikes that were annoying to deal with, but unlike 64, when I died at least it felt like my fault. This game was incredibly frustrating at times and put me into moods that Jess says almost ended our marriage. But getting those tough stars sure were rewarding at the end and made it (kinda) worth it. In the end I was very pleased to have beat it knowing I...

Cemetery Boys - Adrien Thomas

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) Yadriel is a trans boy who comes from a long family line of brujx, and he just wants to prove to them that he's a real brujo. So he tries to bring back the spirit of his cousin who recently died... except the boy he brings back is NOT his cousin, and he's not willing to cross over until Yadriel helps him check on his friends and tie up some loose ends. Boy was this fun! And it's also just really cool to see more queer characters in genre fiction as well, plus with a setting that's not typical for fantasy/paranormal fiction. Yadriel being trans plays a big part in the story, as his family keeps misgendering or dead-naming him, plus he needs to deal with things like his binder being too tight and not knowing which bathroom to use. Plus this new issue of how his new ghost friend keeps distracting him in math class. There are some mystery elements to the story too, since he wants to find out who killed both Julian and his cousin. A...

The Blue Castle - LM Montgomery

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I was very surprised at how much I enjoyed this little-known book by the Anne of Green Gables author. The main character is Valancy, an old maid at 29 who has never had any marriage prospects (LOL ME!), and all of her relatives are so stuffy and boring and ridiculous. She quietly obeys whatever they say and puts up with her very dreary life because she feels like she needs them. But when she has some heart pains she sees the doctor, and when he tells her she has maximum one year left to live, she decides she won't be afraid anymore and she'll do what she wants for once. Valancy starts telling her family what she really thinks of them, gets a job taking care of a disgraced woman, meets new people, and does whatever it takes for her to enjoy the rest of her life. There might be a marriage contract involved. This is not a sad book, which I feel like is not a spoiler because the whole tone of this book is so light-hearted that you know the...

Hench - Natalie Zina Walschots

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This book was quite unlike anything I've ever read before. In this world of superheroes and villains, Anna works as a freelance hench... but mostly working with data and spreadsheets. Villains also need people doing their boring grunt work! One day a job goes wrong, and she's a casualty when the biggest superhero Super Collider pushes her and her leg gets totally shattered. While she's out of work and recovering, she starts collecting data about how many people heroes kill and injure, and how much damage they bring about. When she releases her findings, she gets hired by the big villain Leviathan, and her main role is to find ways to make heroes' lives super annoying. So yes, it's pretty much a henchwoman whose job it is to look at spreadsheets and cook up schemes to be annoying. I love that concept. Anna isn't really evil, and for her henching is just a job like any other, pretty much, until she starts to truly hate he...

The Mandalorian (Season 2)

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I enjoy watching this show well enough, but to be honest, I don't think I'd be sticking with it if it weren't for the draw that is Baby Yoda/Grogu. I just don't love episodic shows very much if they're not funny, I guess. Mostly during each episode I'm just waiting to see Baby Yoda, or to find out if Mando is ever going to take off his helmet. I think a big reason why I'm not really into this show is because I don't care about action/fight scenes, plus I'm also not a big enough Star Wars fan to be in it just for the universe-expanding aspects. But I can see why those are draws for others, and I do understand why others love it.

Where the Heart Is - Billie Letts

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) This book is about a pregnant 17-year old living in the Southern USA being left at a Walmart by her boyfriend on a cross-country move. And it just gets more intense from there. It follows both the girl (Novalee) and her boyfriend (Willy Jack) over the next few years and tells their story. Willy Jack's is an incredibly difficult read and it really brings to light some difficult subjects. He was clearly not well-loved or educated as a child and boy does it show. She wasn't either but she somehow manages to rise above it all and become one of the most endearing characters I've ever read about. She is truly so inspiring to me and models so well how to love and learn and live well. It's breathtaking sometimes. This is not a light read - it is an Oprah's Book Club book after all - but if you're interested in the small-town southern US dynamic, it's a good one for sure.

Die Hard

⭐ 6.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) The ultimate Christmas movie! Jk, I really don't see why this is such a classic. The action is pretty epic and the movie is pretty suspenseful, and I guess that's all you really want from a movie like this. But I found the protagonist to be pretty unlikeable, the villains to be pretty lame (Snape, can you stick to one accent?!) and the whole story to be pretty forgettable. If you want a Christmas movie with blood though, I guess this is the pick.

The Queen’s Gambit - Season 1

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is what I'm talking about! I have been very discouraged thinking I just didn't like TV because I found these good shows like The Crown and Madmen so boring. But Tv can be exciting! This show has everything. Drama! Tension! Likeable, complex characters! I really haven't been into a show like this for quite some time. I always wanted to watch the next episode, and always felt rewarded when I did. I think this show did an awesome job of combining a few strains here, as a coming of age, a period piece, and of course a sports drama. I loved each aspect, though (and I know this is an unpopular opinion) I think they played the sports drama way too safe in the end. I think they show was setting up for a striking finish, and I felt a little let down in that regard. I wish I could say more, and I fear I've already spoiled it a bit, but for a show that I felt was pretty unique, it just went with the cut and paste ending I was hoping to ...

The Mandalorian (Season 2)

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I'm pretty torn on this show. I should like it, since it's a Star Wars show that sticks to its roots and gets a lot of the Star Wars stuff right. But I don't find it too exciting, maybe because it's a kid's show, and I don't feel like there are ever any actual stakes here. I feel like half the excitement for this show is for the cameos and fan service that don't do too much for me. I hate the episodic formula, though fortunately they went away from it late. Mando is a pretty flat character in my opinion, even though he went through a bit of a contrived arc, and I really wish we could have a season of him without his helmet to breathe some life into this guy. LBY is the ultimate floor raiser of television as his presence alone deserves a decent score. There were some great elements to be sure, and as a whole I still liked this show. But there is still something missing for me.

Miracle on 34th Street

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This was my first time watching this classic and I'm thinking I'll certainly have to mix it into the yearly holiday rotation. It's certainly a kid's movie, but it's got a lot of elements I think keep adults interested. It's got a lot of charm and wholesomeness, it's well acted, and it's also pretty smart. Certainly worth watching if you're looking for a Christmas movie, and for me it ranks up there with It's a Wonderful Life.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Season 6)

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) A short season, and not the greatest. The most memorable arc here is one in which a clone trooper has order 66 executed early, and basically uncovers the grand conspiracy baked into all the clones. This is something that happens in Revenge of the Sith but is never really explained - why the clones all flip sides. This is what makes this show great, filling in these gaps in interesting ways. There was another arc about Yoda learning how to become a force ghost and trying to discover the identity of the Sith, but the rest of the season was forgettable. Still giving it a 7 because the inhibitor chip is some of the best stuff to come out of this show. Can't wait for season 7, since its trailer basically convinced me to start watching this whole show.

The Mandalorian (Season 2)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) I loved this season so much. The format is still kind of a week to week adventure, but I love how easy and enjoyable it is to watch. Several episodes stood out for their amazing set pieces, cameo appearances, and Baby Yoda cooing. The finale was incredible in itself, and is easily some of the best Star Wars content to come out in the past 20 years. This whole show really feels like a love letter to Star Wars, with the constant planet hopping and small glimpses of different people letting your imagination run wild with the creativity of this galaxy. The fight scenes were epic, the beloved characters that showed up made me feel like a child, and this season had some more clear goals than the first one. Disney+ has locked in my subscription for years to come.

New Girl (Season 5)

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) The best season yet! Actually found a bunch of the jokes and plotlines funny, as the characters are solidified in their roles. However, I think the reason I remember this season so fondly is because there is a multi-episode arc where the titular New Girl is not on the show! I realized the reason this show sucks is because the main character is so stupid, and when she is gone there is a completely different energy. The guys are all stupid too, but in a loving and much less annoying way. I don't ever really look forward to watching the show, but I was pleasantly surprised with this season. Somehow Winston has become my favourite character.

The Santa Clause

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) We watched this movie multiple times a year growing up, so I expected that I would watch it now as a grown up, realize it is really childish, and think it is actually a bad movie. I was relieved to find that this movie is actually solid! Tim Allen's snarky humour throughout the movie is still pretty funny, and even though the CGI is terrible they do a good job of constructing a sense of wonder with the north pole. The premise is also so great, where the man who kills Santa becomes Santa, and the year he has to grow into the role is really funny. Lots of great body humour with him putting on weight and growing a beard. Just a fun time all around. There were several things that stood out watching this as an adult. The Santa ClausE, with an E, is a pun on a contract clause!? I never noticed until now. Also, I was able to empathize with the ex-wife and step dad. Scott totally seems like he is pretending to become Santa to win his son's affection...

Last Christmas

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This movie is super cheesy at times, but you know what? I kinda liked it! Who doesn't like a story of a person trying to put their life back together? I kinda really liked Emilia Clarke's character here, or at least I found her realistic based on my experience with people in her situation. There was enough charm between the other characters to make it all a nice watch, and while the twist was a little predictable and a little lame, at least it felt unique. I also felt that it was funny enough, and was another reminder that clever British comedies almost always do more for me than whatever American comedies try to do. Again, this score is more just adjusted on the Christmas Movie scale. It's not great, but it's good enough for this time of year.

Mean Girls (2004)

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Mathew) This is such an iconic film and definitely Tina Fey's best writing and creative work. Jill used to watch this every night to fall asleep in high school so we've seen it probably a few hundred times. It held up then and it holds up now. I put it up there with School of Rock as early 2000s movies that will stay relevant for a long time. It is such a farce of the high school experience for young women but it also really nails it. It's a genuine story told by an outsider that gets sucked into the wild world of Spring Flings, wearing pink on Wednesdays, and "Fetch". It feels strange to give a 10/10 to a movie when there are other 10s I enjoy more (and probably some 9s), but I can't think of any faults. Where else can I hear "Mathlete Rap" written by Tina Fey? You go Glen Coco!

A Simple Favor

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) This movie was a strange mix of drama, thriller, and dark comedy. It kept me guessing the whole time but in the end looking back kind of seemed predictable somehow. A little too twisted for me to really enjoy it.

Noelle

⭐ 6.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This was a pretty disappointing movie considering the cast. It was mostly a rip off of the greatest Christmas movie ever (Elf) but not as funny. Kinda wish it hadn't been made for kids. Still had some laughs, and was about as about as good as your average Christmas movie if you'd rather watch a new average movie instead of an old average movie.

The Beauty in Breaking - Michele Harper

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is a memoir about a black ER physician. She’s worked in the South Bronx and in Philadelphia so you know she’s seen some stuff. This was an interesting read. I went into it expecting it to be more traumatic and heartbreaking, and while there were definitely elements of that, that wasn’t the focus. Which looking back now was good for me. Her focus was more on her acting as a healer to the people she was around and to herself. She had a bad childhood and a bad marriage so she was constantly dealing with her broken past. But it wasn’t the bad type of healing where everything can be fixed with the essential oils; she made it clear that she believes in modern medicine and that it needs to be utilized. However, she also stressed the importance of human connection, eating and living right, and listening to our bodies. Some of it was mumbo jumbo but some of it was really insightful. She also wrote really beautifully. The book flowed really well and th...

Long Walk to Freedom - Nelson Mandela

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is Nelson Mandela's autobiography. I had a bit of a tough time getting into it to start. His early life was interesting I think, especially as it gives you a look into a very different upbringing, but throughout the book I had a hard time understanding everything that was going on due to unfamiliar names and places. Additionally, much of this book was hard to get through as it was super legal or political. There were hundreds of pages detailing court proceedings and legal battles that I couldn't really get into. But as the book goes on, especially around the half way point when Mandela starts to rise in prominence and you get more attached to the character, the book was pretty irresistible. South Africa is astonishing in its history. I couldn't believe what was going on there, especially because it was so recent! Decades after LBJ signed the Civil Rights act, black people were still not able to vote in a country in which they wer...

Sound of Metal

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) This is a movie about a heavy metal drummer who goes deaf, and has to learn to deal with his new way of life. It is really gut-wrenching at times, and does an excellent job of putting you in his shoes. When you experience him learning to communicate with people you are just as lost as he is, and it gives you a sense of how overwhelming an adjustment like that would be. Really this movie is a Riz Ahmed showcase. I bought tons of his stock after Nightcrawler, doubled down after The Night Of, and then was very disappointed by his minor role in Rogue One. But this guy is amazing, and is the center of this movie. Has all the anger you would expect from a heavy metal drummer, and as he progresses and learns and screws up it is just so easy to empathize with him, For sure one of the best movies I have seen this year (not that there have been all that many new releases, so the bar is low). It is heart breaking and heart warming all at the same time, and fea...

Dark (Season 3)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) This show was really something else. Kind of impossible to talk about, given that it is the most complicated show I have ever seen, but it reminded me of Lost right up to the final season. I don't think this final season was that bad, but the show is so high concept that wrapping it up is almost impossible to do in a way that would please everyone. There were many satisfying moments as the incredible knot the show has created finally completes. However, with the introduction of a parallel universe that is stuck in a "quantum loop" with the universe we know, it means you end up watching moments you have seen before but mirrored in an interesting way. Kind of set everything in place and made the previous events make more sense, but it means the show lost its momentum a bit, since you are less on your toes. As complicated as the show is, it is pretty incredibly mapped out, and they answer literally every question you could have about ...

Klaus

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) I spent the first thirty minutes wondering when this would become a Christmas movie, and wondering why everyone in this town is so violent. But it became a pretty charming origin story, and I liked it. It definitely steals a ton from The Emperor's New Groove - entitled guy forced to part with his riches, befriended by a very large soft spoken man. Even the evil woman looks just like Yzma. The thing is, I love the Emperor's New Groove, so I was happy to watch a Christmas version of it. Reminded me a bit of Arthur Christmas, in that it was a pretty unique Christmas story that I was engaged with the whole time. If you are forced to watch a Christmas movie, there are many many worse options.

Alto's Adventure

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Will) This game is incredibly peaceful - the art and music create an absolutely serene atmosphere. Also, it's a snowboarding game somehow? And it almost makes me like winter for twenty minutes at a time. If you're looking for something relatively peaceful to play, consider this one, regardless of whether you care about snowboarding at all. It's super simple (there's literally one button - you tap it or you hold it), but I keep coming back to it for 20 minutes at a time. It also has a great Zen Mode that removes all scoring and markers of progress - just you and the beautiful mountain slopes plus calming background piano. Youtube trailer if you want a feel for it is here . I'm only docking points because it's just a small, simple game - I didn't have any real issues with it.

School Of Rock

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) What a classic movie! Unlike @Jess Dyck, I think this might be Jack Black’s best film. He is so loveable in this one and just wants what’s best for his kids. This movie is legit funny. I had so much fun watching this one again and forgot how many great characters are in here. The students are so cool and I just love a movie about music. Looking back I think the parents were totally valid with how upset they were! Can you imagine just some rando teaching your kids?! But also that’ll be me in 10 years so..

The Grinch (2018)

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Will) This movie was mostly fine. It had it's really funny moments, but it didn't really offer anything new beyond the Jim Carrey version, except that the Grinch is a bit less terrifying to young children in this one. It also got a little preachy at the end - they decided to spell out the entire message of the movie in detail, again for the benefit of young kids I guess. If you're looking for a Christmas movie this one's pretty funny at times, which might be good enough.

Homes - Abu Bakr al Rabeeah with Winnie Yeung

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Will) This is a refugee story capturing the life of a family from their home in Iraq, their move to Syria, and their eventual escape to Canada. The story is told from the perspective of a young boy (Bakr), who told the story to his English teacher(Yeung) in Edmonton. This is a heart-breaking story, but also manages to say a lot about familial love and how communities deal with dangerous and difficult situations. Reading the story from the perspective of the young boy is what makes this book so worth it, because he never really talks about or analyzes the greater conflict as a whole - instead, everything is from his viewpoint in his little world. He never talks about who exactly is fighting who in Syria, or who's bad and who's good - he just wants to play soccer and video games with his cousins, get through school, and stay as far away as possible from anyone with a gun. Well worth the read, especially for Canadians given that we have so many Syri...

An Absolutely Remarkable Thing by Hank Green

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) Enjoyed reading this 'contemparary sci-fi' (?) I immediately want to read the next book.

Little Women (2019)

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) I’ve seen this movie before and will definitely watch it again after. This just feels like a Christmas movie and I will take any excuse to watch this movie again. Im actually not sure what drives my desire and love for this movie. I literally think about it all the time and I think it will go down as one of my favourite movies of all time. Is it the incredibly complex sisters, parents, and friends with very unique personalities? Is it the easy going banter that seems to flow flawlessly between characters? All of the above and so much more. If I can get a bit vulnerable on this app with some of my closest friends I definitely relate to Jo a lot. There is so much I want to do and achieve in life and marriage just seems like it was bring me down, but there are times when I’m lonely. While they are usually far and in between, it’s there. Anywho! Laura Dern is incredible and Beth was too soft for this world.

Klaus

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I’ve been trying to make Tim understand that the weeks leading up to Christmas need to be fully dedicated to Christmas movie content. Klaus was the only one we could agree on tonight. And it was adorable! The first 30 minutes or so had us thoroughly confused, very much wondering how this movie won an Oscar and how the heck this psycho town and terrible human “protagonist” could turn into a Christmas movie? Hey it worked! Somehow this became a truly heartwarming, surprising, tear jerking and wonderful story! MAJOR Emperor’s New Groove vibes throughout. MAJOR. Children’s humour is so weird, but the true message of this one came through loud and clear and I LOVED it. An amazing origin story.

La La Land

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I love this movie. I love the music, I love the cheesy dancing, I love the montages, I love the pure magic chemistry that is Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone together, and I even love the melancholy ending. This movie always moves me, it holds a very very special place in my heart, and for Tim and I. I walked down the aisle to these songs for goodness sake. I was a little less enamoured by this movie on the 6th viewing, but I don’t think I could ever give this less than a 10. A beautiful movie that I’ll love to the end.

Mank

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I mean I feel like this was a good movie but I had a hard time following and I didn’t get all that drawn into it. I think the scene of Mank and Miriam walking around the Hearst Estate is amazing. It’s definitely packed with Old Hollywood Glamour and names I’d heard before and I’m very glad we watched it, because it certainly seems like a movie made for awards season and now I’ve seen it. As much as I feel like I’d get more out of a second viewing I don’t really want to watch it again. Honestly I loved the story and sets mostly cuz of Tim and I’s visit to Hearst castle—so fun to imagine the parties and see them come to life. Shout out to Lily Collins who I think is a pretty terrible actress who was actually lovely in this, A+ British accent!

Virgin River

⭐ 3.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) Whyyyy did I keep watching this, you ask? Because I kept expecting it to get better!! Instead they brought in every single dramatic thing they could think of. It's like the show writers couldn't bear the thought of problems being solved. It's basically a new twist on soap operas if that's your thing.

Super Mario 64

⭐ 4.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I played this as part of the Switch's 3D all-stars. It is a beloved game, so I know this score will come as a personal insult to at least 1 person here. This game is over 20 years old and the first of its kind. I wanted to play it more as a history lesson and experience what kids at the time felt was the greatest game ever. I gave it an honest try, but this game is straight up too outdated at this point. The main issues are the camera and the controls. The game is all about precision platforming, but it is just so hard to get a camera angle where you can measure the distance or even, you know, see your character. As for controls, it feels like I'm trying to thread a needle with two oven mitts on. Everything just feels slippery and clumsy which exactly what you don't want in this kind of game. I never played this game as a kid, so I have no nostalgic love for this game. Because it is a platforming game with bad platforming, it doesn...

The Wizard of Earthsea - Ursula K. LeGuin

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I wanted to like this way more than I did. While reading I had to remind myself when this was written (1968), and that fantasy was a whole different genre that it is now. She was doing cool stuff for her time, but reading it today, the characters felt flat, although the world-building was impressive. I believe she was influential on fantasy, and it's cool she was one of the first to have non-white characters in fantasy. But... I didn't actually enjoy reading this book much. Her writing was somewhere between Lewis and Tolkien in terms of wordiness, but maybe this just reminded me of them because she was writing shortly after them. Still mostly a big quest, with a few side-quests in between. The main character is Ged, who obviously has some wizard powers at a young age, so he gets sent to wizard school. He's better than everyone else, so he starts getting proud. His enemy challenges him, and Ged tries out a spell he shouldn't kno...

A Royal Guide to Monster Slaying - Kelley Armstrong

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This is great MG book about Rowan, who is a princess in line to be the next queen, while her twin brother is going to be the Royal Monster Slayer. Problem is, Rowan would much rather be a monster slayer! When a gryphon that needs slaying shows up, it's time for her to show what she can do! Cue the adventures! This book was super fun. Rowan is feisty and impulsive, but she sincerely does want to help her people. She gets to meet all sorts of magical creatures, and the book has all sorts of great messages about treating wild animals kindly and humanely. I loved that gender roles don't really exist in this world, and it's all about your strengths and the job you're most suited for, although birth order dictates that her brother Rhydd should be the monster slayer, even though he's much more level-headed than Rowan. Recommended especially for kids!

Mulan (2020)

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This was fine. Honestly, I watched it about a week ago and I can't even remember any thoughts I had upon watching it, except for that I found it jarring to watch Chinese-looking people in China speaking English. It wasn't funny like the original Disney version and it didn't have the grand scale epic-ness of the Chinese version. Good enough, but no other lasting impression.

Taylor Swift - Folklore: the Long Pond Studio Sessions

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This was the perfect companion piece to her album. Essentially the movie is her and the two other producers/musicians got together in upstate New York to perform the album live. They chat a bit about how each song came to be, the inspiration behind it, and then they play it live in a cottage studio. I’m super biased but this was awesome. She knew she couldn’t tour so she gave her fans the next best thing. She is at the top of her game lyrically and she sounds amazing too. Loved this so much

A Theology of Liberation - Gustavo Guttierrez

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This review has been a long time coming. I started reading this in October but it’s so incredibly dense that I had to renew it from the library 4 times! I’ve had many conversations due to this book and have had a lot of my theology rocked and changed by reading it. It’s not anything new, per se, but he writes in a way that I have been thinking for a long time but puts it so profoundly, biblically, and succinctly. His main argument, I would say, is that liberation of humanity equals communion with God and others. He calls for a radical change in social structures and denounces the evil of institutions that exploit and use humans for profitable gain while slowly killing the working class. There were a lot of times where the book stopped me in my tracks. I will have to go back to this one and HIGHLY recommend this to all Christians. I believe it is in my top 10 most influential books I’ve read. To have a theology of liberation is to understand that ...

Tickets to my Downfall - Machine Gun Kelly

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is probably one of the best pop/punk rock I’ve heard in a really long time. Which is ironic because MGK originally came out as a rapper. This album is so good. It’s fast paced with a lot of catchy songs and solid hooks. Nothing new on the punk rock scene - basically just sings about girls, drugs and parties. I listened to this album a lot when I was running and it’s perfect to get you hyped. The only negative to this album is that it’s too damn long. It’s got 21 tracks! If it was, say a 13 track album I think it would be perfect. Forget Me Too, All I Know, and My Ex’s Best Friend stand out to me!

A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor - Hank Green

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) I had read the prequel to this book last year and was so excited to read this one. It did not disappoint at all. So exciting and wild and unexpected. Go read Magdalene and Kathleen's reviews for a summary and review, because they wrote exactly what I would say only better.

Mank

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) This is a movie about the guy who writes Citizen Kane, and jumps back and forth between his life before writing it and his life during the writing. It is filmed in a genuinely beautiful black and white, and lots of the camera work and framing intentionally copy the techniques Citizen Kane brought to the forefront. These are surface things that I noticed having seen both movies once, but I got the sense that this movie was made for devoted movie fans to salivate over. The characters are all real people, most of the names I didn't recognize, but I was sure that people who are film junkies were reacting the same way Marvel fans do when Stan Lee shows up. The story was good, but way more political than I thought it would be. I assumed it would be reliving the experiences that inspired the writing of Mank's masterwork, but it seemed to be dabbling in more recent topics like fake news and the media's role in politics. It wasn't distra...

Dear Martin - Nic Stone

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This was actually an incredibly accompanying book to the one I just read. It’s fiction, about a young teen in his senior year who has a run in with the law and starts a journal where he writes short letters to MLK. It was really similar to The Hate U Give - except a bit shorter, set in Atlanta, and from the perspective of a boy. Man oh man, I mean this year probably more than ever we’ve heard about black people being policed and killed, and this kind of just gave flesh to the movement, even if it was fiction I know there is a lot of realism within the story. I feel bad for rating this one higher than my previous read but guys, at one point I WEPT. It was a really well written story for a fitting time.

The Old Guard

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) A pretty cool concept involving immortality and millennium old fighters trying to do good in the world, but nothing really new. Quite bloody and violent. Probably some 'great' fight scenes; I don't know because I wasn't looking. Dudley was the main villian and seemed TOO evil, even for grown-up Dudley.

Heartstone - Elle Katharine White

Image
⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) This book was a really fun twist on Pride and Prejudice which included DRAGONS. (See above cover art) It was really fun reading and guessing how the author would make the connections between the two books and she followed it quite closely which I really enjoyed. I haven't yet met a Pride and Prejudice fan fiction I didn't like (zombies would be the one though) and this one also definitely didn't disappoint!

Christmas Chronicles 1 and 2

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) These movies really weren't that great, yet somehow I managed to enjoy watching them! Something about snuggling up and watching a Christmas movie with my family just gets me all sappy and helps me overlook plot holes and cheesiness. I even got a little emotional! Mrs Clause was a particularly terrible actress and I didn't love the animated elves, but hey, it's better than any hallmark movie.

NBA 2K20

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Tough to know how to review a game like this. On the one hand, this game feels and looks like the NBA games I played as a teenager. It feels too much like a video game to feel like I'm playing basketball (manipulating AI, cheesing mechanics, etc.) but also is too much like basketball to be a good video game (you do everything right, yet still miss a jumpshot). For this reason, the single player is mostly frustrating, and the game is so clunky and has so much jank that I could never call it a good game. But as a multiplayer game to kick around with some friends, this game is a delight. It's one of the best replacements to basketball in the winter, and the clunkiness is a hoot when you're playing together. It has provided a ton of laughs and good times, and for any NBA fan this is full recommend. The game also went above and beyond with it's options. You can do anything, including My Player, be a GM, coach, etc. For quick games, you...

Reading While Black - Esau McCaulley

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This book is pretty self explanatory. Dr. McCaulley writes this short but impactful book about his experience - and the larger black experience - reading the bible as an African American. There were some really fascinating chapters in here that talked about modern day policing of black people and how the early Christians may have been policed by the Roman guard. He traced the earliest of Christianity back to Africa and demands that black people everywhere have a claim to Christianity and the bible - not just through the slave master white man who passed it down. It was a shorter book but really dense. An important read for me as I am studying scripture and trying to get a more well rounded view of the bible from different voices. A poignant statement he made was that when liberation was happening for the black community, some churches were tempted to throw away all of scripture, as if one can’t read the bible without coming to the conclusion that ...

SteamWorld Dig 2

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Will) This was an excellent follow-up that improved on the first one in basically every way. The best parts: Exploring the mines is just plenty of fun The game feels a bit like a platformer at times, but it's designed so you never get stuck at a hard part that you have to try a hundred times over (looking at you Ori) Love the art style, which always increases my enjoyment of a game a lot The only real downside is it was still pretty short - I think I spent 9 hours until I finished the storyline, at which point I didn't care to continue exploring just to find the remaining secrets. I think I only paid like $7 for it so I got way more than my money's worth, but it's hard to give a game 9+ stars when it's this short.

Klaus

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Will) I don't particularly care for most Christmas movies, but this one is worth it and is one we'll likely come back to year after year. It's funny, it feels pretty original, it's heart-warming, and the kids love it too.

The Crown (Season 4)

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I've never been crazy about this show mostly because I find it hard to care about the lives of spoiled, rich, pretentious people. I'm not sure what changed in this season, but for whatever reason I was really invested in the cast we've really gotten to know. I think in large part it's because we've now got a clear good guy to cheer for (Diana) and a villain to despise (Charles). I still appreciate that the show tries to capture the complexity of characters, such as the Queen and Thatcher, but I think overall the show benefitted from a classic good vs evil tale. I thought this show still suffered a bit from trying too hard to have a message, especially in early episodes, but it came around in the end, or at least by then it didn't feel corny to me. There were also some terrific moments of high tension and arguments where a character made a good point and I'd pump my fist. The acting was incredible, and this show is the ...

Chef

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This movie stars Jon Favreau as a fancy restaurant chef but he gets in a scuffle with a food critic, quits his job and decides to purchase a food truck. I'm gonna be honest, you give me any movie or video that has food montages and I’ll like it. This movie made me want to take a trip across a country hitting up the best restaurants in each place (similar to what most of my vacations revolve around). The movie was good with some funny characters and tried to drive home the importance of loving what you do and doing it with the people you love. I think they tried a bit too hard to be deep and the message didn’t really land. Also the ending romance made me angry. Plus there was a lot of sexual tension with the main character and Scarlet Johansen and then her character completely disappears after the first 30 minutes. The food part was honestly the best thing about this movie.

Klaus

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) What a beautiful, heart-warming Christmas movie! The movie creates a beautiful (at times heart-breaking) origin story for Santa Claus and I just think it's so well done! I love the animation and the character growth and the funny one-liners. It's just all so good. This was my second time watching it and I loved it just as much as I did the first time!

One Day at a Time (Seasons 1-3)

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) Disclaimer: This show is cheesy to the max and I don't necessarily recommend it. 😂 That being said, I loved this show! I'm truly a sucker for any show that just follows normal life with a group of characters I grow to love. This show delivered. The show follows a newly single-mother army vet who lives with her eccentric mother. Their landlord is constantly trying to worm his way into their family and I just love all the dynamics. The cheesy part comes in when they try to tackle one huge issue an episode and it gets a little forced but I still learned stuff and truly appreciated the dialogue the family had around the topic. It also ends (so far) very non-traditionally which I can't figure out if I like. Oh, and it has some major Jane the Virgin vibes because they're again a Latin-American family living in the US with a strong matriarch. Anyway, it's a good time. 👌

The Crown (Season 4)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) I started watching this series because I'm interested in history and wanted to learn more about the history of the British monarchy. I wasn't expecting to become so invested in the characters' lives and so emotionally involved. I was worried that I wouldn't find this season as interesting since I'm not all that interested in the recent events, but I found myself again surprisingly hooked. They do such a fabulous job of engaging the audience to feel like we really know these characters, showing the different sides to them all. Really enjoyed watching it, though now have such negative feelings towards Prince Charles which I didn't need in my life right now.

Aquaman

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Finally got around to seeing this. Overall it was fun and the humour wasn't too bad. Probably one of the best DC movies, in my opinion (though that's not saying much). I really enjoyed the visuals and thought they did a pretty decent job with creating underwater scenes, given how difficult that would have been. A little lame but Samuel loved it so much I couldn't help but enjoy myself.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) Jess wanted to watch a Christmas movie, and Disney+ delivered. I watched this one constantly as a kid, so I was pretty nostalgic watching it again. I remembered all the places young me used to laugh, and still laughed quite a few times. The muppets add a bit of levity to a pretty dark tale, and the narration from Gonzo is great. The ghost of Christmas past is still terrifying though, and she/it has lots of screen time, so be warned. I also didn't realize that Scrooge was Michael Caine until this watch, so that was cool. Does a pretty good job for a movie where he is essentially the only human. Shoutout to Bob Cratchit, a.k.a Kermit, whose weird singing voice and questionable frog/pig family actually pulled a bit of emotion out of me.

La La Land

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) I'd like to credit Joe's review inspiring me to rewatch this, but it might have just been Netflix's targeted ads. Regardless, his review is a good summary of how I feel about this one. Can't really give this an unbiased review, since every time I watch it I am instantly transported back to the first time I watched it. I even remember seeing the trailer for the first time and telling Jess, the guy who made Whiplash is making a musical in LA staring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone and it just might be our favourite movie ever. The hype was high that first time, it delivered, and it still delivers. The songs are catchy and easy to love, and the visuals are also really distinct with tons of solid primary colours, making it feel like you are actually watching an old musical that is taking advantage of colour for the first time. The ending is heart-breaking and perfect, and every time I watch this I think, heck, if Ryan Gosling can becom...

Living Undocumented

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is a short 6 episode series that follows different people from different countries living in the US undocumented/illegally. Every family they showed had been in America for quite a few years when Trump became president and suddenly all of their lives were literally flipped upside down. This was a crazy doc to watch. It really showed how f*cked up the immigration system is in America and how detrimental it can be to individuals and families. They were obviously pretty biased against trump but it’s clear that this system goes way back. From the beginning the system has never been good for immigrants but Trump just turned it all the way up with his zero tolerance policies. This show made me feel so many things. Mostly anger at nationalists who take imaginary borders so seriously and don’t contemplate how real human lives are affected by that. I’m serious, I’ve never met a person who is nationalistic who didn’t make me mad. But it also made me f...

Smile - Katy Perry

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) Katy Perry ruled the early 2010s. She releases fun, catchy songs that get stuck in your head and are easy to sing along to. This album was very mediocre. Didn’t hate it, didn’t love it. Added some of the songs to other playlists but that’s probably as far as it’ll go. I listened to it quite a few times all the way through and it just didn’t land. It is a hopeful album though and I can respect that. She went through depression and some other mental health stuff but here she sings she got her smile back. Never Really Over, Daisies, and Resilient shine through on this album.

mama’s boy - LANY

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) I’ve been following these guys for a few years now and really love their sound. They somehow sound mainstream and entirely unique at the same time. I was stoked for this album. I had seen them live last year so I was pumped to be getting new music. I wanted to like this album more than I did. There are definitely some stand out songs (if this is the last time, good guys, cowboy in la), but it all starts to blend together. I will say though this album somehow makes you feel nostalgic and I think that’s powerful. I’d still go see them live.

Molly’s Game

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is a fast paced movie with high stakes. It’s about an ex-Olympian girl that moves to LA, starts hosting underground poker games for the elites, and slowly rises to the top. Guys, this movie was so good! The characters were really interesting and the dialogue was sharp and witty. The main character, Jessica Chastain, was incredible, and Idris Elba and Kevin Costner were good supporting actors. I think most of you would like this one, even if you hate poker! My one complaint is that *SPOILERS kinda** it wraps up a bit too nicely. Obviously you root for the main character but it was too perfect.

Now or Never Now, by Metric

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) Not reviewing the album, just the song. I wouldn't say this is my favorite but i do think it's a perfect song. The guitar riffs and solo, the synth and delay effects on the keys, the percussion that seems to partner alongside with everything else so well and of course the female vocalist are all great!
