A Theology of Liberation - Gustavo Guttierrez

⭐ 10.0/10

This review has been a long time coming. I started reading this in October but it’s so incredibly dense that I had to renew it from the library 4 times!

I’ve had many conversations due to this book and have had a lot of my theology rocked and changed by reading it. It’s not anything new, per se, but he writes in a way that I have been thinking for a long time but puts it so profoundly, biblically, and succinctly.

His main argument, I would say, is that liberation of humanity equals communion with God and others. He calls for a radical change in social structures and denounces the evil of institutions that exploit and use humans for profitable gain while slowly killing the working class.

There were a lot of times where the book stopped me in my tracks. I will have to go back to this one and HIGHLY recommend this to all Christians. I believe it is in my top 10 most influential books I’ve read.

To have a theology of liberation is to understand that above all God calls us to love others and point them to the love of Christ - and we can’t do that while we are involved in the oppression of so many. I learned to much from this book and legitimately believe it had dramatically shaped my mind.
