Sound of Metal

⭐ 9.0/10

This is a movie about a heavy metal drummer who goes deaf, and has to learn to deal with his new way of life. It is really gut-wrenching at times, and does an excellent job of putting you in his shoes. When you experience him learning to communicate with people you are just as lost as he is, and it gives you a sense of how overwhelming an adjustment like that would be.

Really this movie is a Riz Ahmed showcase. I bought tons of his stock after Nightcrawler, doubled down after The Night Of, and then was very disappointed by his minor role in Rogue One. But this guy is amazing, and is the center of this movie. Has all the anger you would expect from a heavy metal drummer, and as he progresses and learns and screws up it is just so easy to empathize with him,

For sure one of the best movies I have seen this year (not that there have been all that many new releases, so the bar is low). It is heart breaking and heart warming all at the same time, and features tons of deaf actors, so that is pretty cool.
