Super Mario Sunshine
⭐ 7.0/10

After my disappointing time with Mario 64, really any functional video game would have been a pleasant change. Sunshine is certainly functional, and I thought even pretty good!
I really couldn't believe this was a game from 2002. It looks phenomenal, especially on the switch. It still has some mechanical issues, like the camera still being somewhat limited, but nothing felt broken or unplayable. The game itself has so much charm. Winter of 2020 is a wasteland, but in contrast this game is bright and happy and tropical.
But did I enjoy it? Ah, sometimes. This game had some ridiculous difficulty spikes that were annoying to deal with, but unlike 64, when I died at least it felt like my fault. This game was incredibly frustrating at times and put me into moods that Jess says almost ended our marriage. But getting those tough stars sure were rewarding at the end and made it (kinda) worth it. In the end I was very pleased to have beat it knowing I'll never pick it up again.
I still think Mario is a super weird universe, and I think 3d platforming is really not that enjoyable. However, with that said I enjoyed this game enough to have me looking forward to the more celebrated titles like Galaxy and Odyssey.
