A Royal Guide to Monster Slaying - Kelley Armstrong

This is great MG book about Rowan, who is a princess in line to be the next queen, while her twin brother is going to be the Royal Monster Slayer. Problem is, Rowan would much rather be a monster slayer! When a gryphon that needs slaying shows up, it's time for her to show what she can do! Cue the adventures!
This book was super fun. Rowan is feisty and impulsive, but she sincerely does want to help her people. She gets to meet all sorts of magical creatures, and the book has all sorts of great messages about treating wild animals kindly and humanely. I loved that gender roles don't really exist in this world, and it's all about your strengths and the job you're most suited for, although birth order dictates that her brother Rhydd should be the monster slayer, even though he's much more level-headed than Rowan. Recommended especially for kids!
