X-Men ‘97 - Season 1

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) You guys know the saying “it had to be so over before we could be so back”? That’s exactly what’s happening here! It’s been a long 20 years of fox xmen movies. And I won’t say they’re all bad, I would say some are even really good! The standout being Logan of course. But those movies somehow always fell short. You have so much potential with such interesting characters and the movies never followed through. This show fixes all of that. This show follows a small team of core xmen. They animation style is so fun yet so well done. They are so creative and show each character use their powers in never before seen ways. They spend significant time with each character that makes you feel invested in this whole team. I was about to say how they were all great but x character was my fave, but I don’t think I can cause I loved them all! Cyclops FINALLY got his cool guy arc. His powers and leadership really stood out. Rogue and Gambit had this little roman...

Challengers

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is a sports movie that isn’t really about sports but the whole movie basically hinges on tennis. It stars Zendaya and two other white boys and follows their lives as high school tennis players to their adult years and where they are currently. So this movie is kind of weird. It opens with the the final tennis match but hops around a ton to explain the back story and how we got here. I thought it was very effective and was way better than if it had been done linearly. Zendaya is really really good in this and wouldn’t be surprised if she is Oscar nominated. The boys are fun and cute and honestly so charming. This movie also finally does a love triangle right!! So much chemistry between the three actors it was insane. I’ve never played tennis but if it gets me two boyfriends I honestly might get into it. The soundtrack for this was so interesting but really great and standout. Had a great time with this one.

Fourth Wing - Rebecca Yarros

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) So this was easily the most popular book of 2023 for very polarizing reasons. People either loved it or hated it. I don’t hate many things, but I fall very much in the middle. The story was pretty compelling. A lot of things were happening the whole time, the pace was good, she kept pulling you in to a riveting story. The characters and magic and dragons were all pretty cool, albeit very one dimensional, and I could get behind a lot of it. However, the writing of this is truly atrocious. Like, this felt like a 17 year old creative writing project. The dialogue was insane, the magic system was unexplained, and the dragons seemed like humans with the way they talked and thought - only they were in dragon form. So I’m torn, cause it’s not a good book, but it was fun and interesting and I think that’s ok! I kept comparing this book to Eragon. Which again isn’t a well written series but he did so much work to set the foundation for his characters and m...

The Fall Guy

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) I have no strong feelings about this movie either way. It feels like it was supposed to be a Ryan Reynolds movie which is not a good thing but Ryan Gosling has a lot more depth which added to this movie. There were a few cool stunts, some funny moments. All in all just very ok.

99 Nights - Charlotte Cardin

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) She had a huge smash hit that charted really high called Confetti that led me to check out this album. Really solid, moody pop here. I think she has a really great, distinct voice that is atmospheric. Cool backstory to this album. She was going through a life crisis and went to fellow Canadian Jim Carey for some advice and a lot of songs came from that, including the track Jim Carey that might be the best song on the album. I don’t like to acknowledge French Canadians very easily but this album is really great and I’m constantly going back to it.

The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare

⭐ 4.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) Very sad to finally admit that Henry Cavill is immune to making a good movie. This is based on a true story about a secret mission deployed by Winston Churchill during world war 2 to stop the Germans. So first of all, this is the only time ever I’ll root for the English, and even then it was hard. This movie felt like absolutely zero stakes. So very lacklustre; you don’t even see Cavill shirtless once! Hello?! They say “old boy” and “young lad” about a million times and more earnestly each time.

Civil War

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This was intense!! So many close ups of following small bands of soldiers absolutely obliterating people and making their way across America through the lens of journalists. Really cool angle that worked really well. Kirsten Dunst was unreal and I loved this angle of older, grisly, weathered veteran with her apprentice; but with women! Don’t see that very often. The full cast was awesome and so tight and had me white knuckled and on the edge of my seat the whole time. I think this movie lacked a lot of context but I think it was done well. A lot of questions unanswered but I don’t think that was the point. This movie for sure doesn’t glamorize war and violence, in fact I’d say it very much shows the horrors to help us see how terrible it really is. Like Tim said, this movie felt less consequential outside of the theatre. I walked out and it was a gorgeous day with the sun on my face and I believed in magic and life was great. Shoutout to Joel that...

Monkey Man

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is a revenge action movie starring the heart throb Dev Patel who also happened to direct it! Love seeing him do well in the world cause I think he deserves it. This movie is wild. Somehow it’s rated 14+ but should for sure be R. You see him bite someone’s nose off at one point - it’s amazing. This very much felt like a Bollywood film with some western direction. I can see people compare them to John Wick but this was marginally better. I loved the setting, loved the different characters and sets. And I thought the music was pretty good! During action scenes and training montages it had good pump up music. Two things I kind of wanted to talk about regarding this movie is how Patel is an English Indian often playing Indian roles set in India. I think it’s dumb to say he’s appropriating Indian culture cause he is one, and yet I know he didn’t experience the Indian lifestyle growing up in Harrow, UK. I don’t know exactly how I feel about it, and ...

Oh Brother, Where Art Thou?

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) What an unexpected hit! I’m not too familiar with the Koen brothers but I loved this. It was funny, unexpected and so zany! WOW George Clooney is a heartthrob. Just so charming and funny yet great at acting. The music was stellar, the story took some great twists and turns, I really fell in love with this.

Physical: 100 - Season 2

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) I randomly started this show after seeing some cool and interesting clips online and was so hooked. I binged the first 7 episodes then took my time with the last two. It’s basically a reality competition show that takes 100 of Korea’s best athletes and has them compete in a series of challenges, both individually and as a team. 100 people are a lot to route for but there are for sure immediate favourites and stars. They had everything: wrestlers, boxers, swimmers, track and field, Crossfitters, body builders; you name it! The winner of these gruelling challenges gets to what equals around $230,000. Im not sure why I was so engrossed with this show. It gets very repetitive, especially in the beginning, where you have to see the same thing play out so many times. And then the team matches where it’s the same thing till the winner is announced. But ya, it was fun to wonder how I would compete and it was great to watch beautiful fit Korean people on m...

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) New Godzilla Kong movie on Easter weekend? You guessed it: WE ARE SO BACK I know very little about the lore of these misunderstood monsters, so had no idea why they were enemies or why they discovered a new planet called hollow earth but let me say I am on board with any creative decisions these geniuses decide to make! Genuinely funny movie watching these titans just beat the shit out of each other using multiple items and other apes. When Mothra that diva showed up I knew it was over for the baddies. But for real, this movie was a ton of fun. The one product placement was actually unbeatable. Got tacos and iced cream with friends after. What more could I want?!

Eternal Sunshine - Ariana Grande

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) On my first 3 listens I thought this was a perfect album. On my next 3 I still thought it was really good, but not perfect. Still contender for album of the year already. That’s where my opinion has stayed since. I think Ariana is the vocalist of my generation but she hasn’t done anything great. She makes good music, but for her talent she should be making lasting music, and I don’t think she has until now. This album is raw and vulnerable and I don’t think it was necessarily made for primarily commercial success which I think helps remove some of the pressure to just make a catchy song. It’s short, only 13 songs and 35 minutes long. The vice with making something so short means it has to be so tight and cohesive. And I think she did that really well on this. The vocal layering is especially stand out. There are only two songs on here I don’t like, and because of that it’s not a perfect 10. Many standouts but the obvious one is We Can’t Be Friends...

Mona Lisa Smile

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is an early 2000’s movie about Julia Roberts in the 50s moving from the west coast to the east to teach at the nations most conservative women’s college in art history. I think this was maybe a pretty feminist movie when it came out? Really the only way Julia Roberts was subversive or progressive was she wasn’t married, said you could work a job and believed in birth control. I know that must’ve been wild for the 50s but it just didn’t land for me. The cast in this is wild! Kirsten Dunst and Maggie Gyllenhaal being the stand outs as good girl bad girl opposites. But the real standout was Julia Roberts! That’s what movies are missing these days, her! I totally get why she was the it girl. Her beautiful wide smile and big brown doe eyes would make me fall for her any day.

Kung Fu Panda 4

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This movie is definitely the weakest of them all. Felt very halfhearted. The final fight scene was only like 5 minutes long! I genuinely think these movies have some of the greatest kung fu in western media and the series is so good that this one felt like an even bigger disappointment. Shoutout to Viola Davis for her voice acting!

Jaguar II - Victoria Monét

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) Victoria recently won the Grammy for best new artist. And though I don’t think she should’ve won, I’m happy for her and she’s very talented. This isn’t her debut album, she’s been making music for quite a while now. I don’t know what the rules are for new artist but don’t care enough to look them up. This is an R&B/Soul album and it’s really groovy. She has a feature from Earth, Wind, and Fire and I feel like that should speak for itself. I admire her for making a full length album like this in a world full of quick singles, I just don’t know if it’ll be a lasting album. I think this is such a well rounded album and has so many good songs. The opening Smoke is fire, On My Mama, Party Girls, and Hollywood are among my favourites.

Dune: Part Two

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) I am absolutely the kind of person that buys into the hype, so when I heard this was one of the best sequels ever made I couldn’t wait to watch it. And I would argue that they’re right! This movie was incredible! Visuals were stunning. The orange desert, the black sun planet, the worms, the long hallways and expansive caves; all felt like a very specific and beautiful aesthetic that gave it a grand, sweeping atmosphere. Casting literally couldn’t have been better. Was I supposed to be attracted to Austin Butler? The easy mvp here is Stilgar but for me it was actually lady Jessica. She was so sinister and conniving and religious for her own purposes, but you throw in the weird dynamic with her unborn daughter and you just have a powerhouse of a character. Music was great, fight scenes were awesome, and all around just such a wild film. 3 scenes specifically stand out to me. The beginning where the Sardaukar are slowly floating down from their ship...

True Detective - Season One

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) Similar to what has already been said, this season is basically in everyone’s top 3 of best shows ever. It’s dark and gritty with characters you love and route for but are so obviously flawed. It’s spooky and gripping and tells an incredible story start to finish. Yet, for me too it fell short. Nothing to do with the show, but it just didn’t capture me the way I thought and hoped it would. When I think of a perfect limited series (I know this has more seasons but they’re all self contained) Chernobyl is the standard. And this was no Chernobyl for me. I still really enjoyed it and watched with friends. It was cool cause I had just been to Louisiana a bit ago, albeit different settings and locations. Matthew McConaughey is super sexy and was hard not to fall in love with his character.

Madame Webb

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) Yes, I was one of the brave souls who ventured out to watch this. 10/10. No notes.

Anyone But You

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is a really good, terrible movie. You know the kind. I can’t in good conscience recommend it but I enjoyed watching it and was giggling. It’s about Sydney Sweeney and Glen Powell having a meet cute but through the miscommunication trope end up overhearing each other say things they don’t mean and hate each other. Fast forward and they are both in a wedding party for their friends in Australia and pretend to be a couple so their friends and family will lay off them. I actually think Sydney Sweeney is a good actress, and I hate to be that guy, but she is truly mesmerizing. I would just love to see her in something more.. better. She says “bro” about 5 too many times for my liking but I can forgive her. The location was beautiful and there were some funny parts. This movie also broke up Glen Powell’s marriage and for good reason! If my partner was doing scenes like that with Sweeney I’d leave him. Anyway, a fun dumb little romcom that I enjoyed ...

Anatomy of a Fall

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) Two international movies in a row and both starring Sandra Huller!! Who is this guy? Call me Mr. worldwide. This is a French movie that follows the trial of a man who’s died and the wife, Huller is the main suspect. The main witness is their visually impaired son. I really liked this movie. It was very gripping and unpredictable. Huller was really captivating and easily stole the show. But the son was also unreal and the sexy lawyer was awesome. This movie kind of explores truth and what that means when there isn’t sufficient evidence. I feel like currently it’s a particularly topical subject and this movie does a great job addressing it.
