Crimes of the Future

⭐ 1.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) This was a legitimately bad movie. Interesting themes brought down by bad writing, bad acting, bad cinematography, etc. I would consider myself a bit of a Cronenberg fan as well, having liked many of his films in the past, but this one is just bad! Viggo Mortensen gives what is most likely his worst performance, Kristen Stewart’s line delivery is nothing short of atrocious, there isn’t an acting performance I would call good. Also, the production design/costume design looks incredibly cheap. This movie literally looks like a Netflix original. This movie is incredibly disappointing and it made me pretty sad

Dave - Season One

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) I’m going to be honest, I had no expectations for this show. I’m not a huge fan of Lil Dickys music, but some of the guys wanted to watch this so I watched with them. But I must say this show was fantastic. What surprised me most was how much heart this show has. You genuinely care about the characters, and there are genuinely heartfelt moments throughout every episode. There is some fantastic character writing found here. It’s also absolutely hilarious. There are a few weaker episodes in the middle of the season, but apart from that this show was fantastic. Be warned, there is quite a lot of really crude sexual humour, and the third episode is some of the nastiest stuff Ive ever seen, but apart from that I loved this show.

Last Night in Soho

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) Had a really great time with this one! It’s very different from Edgar Wrights other works, which is a very big positive in my opinion! It is genuinely frightening at parts, which I definitely was not expecting! The visuals here were insane (see this one in theatres if possible)! The acting was great, the story was interesting, and I think the character writing was solid for the most part. My only two issues were some rough dialogue at the beginning, and I had some issues with the big “twist” at the end, but neither took away from my enjoyment for the most part. Very fun and entertaining!

Dune

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) I feel like I have nothing new to say here, except see it in IMAX if possible!

The Irishman

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) I went in expecting another copy and paste Goodfellas (which is what Casino was), but this movie definitely had its own thing going on. While Goodfellas and Casino focused more on style and glamour, this movie was more contemplative and bleak. Scorsese really knocked it out of the park with this one. I must admit I have been turned off by the incredibly long runtime, but I’ve been in isolation for a couple days now so I figured this would be the perfect time to watch it haha. Don’t let the long runtime deter you from watching this one, it’s definitely worth it!

Donnie Darko

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) Yeah I didn’t understand this movie. I understand that it was well written, well directed, and well acted, but i really didn’t understand this movie. I don’t even really know what to say about this one honestly. I just don’t really know what it is that I watched. I think I enjoyed it.

Certified Lover Boy - Drake

⭐ 4.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) Well Drake, it might be time to retire. Buddy really hasn’t released a good project in years. Everything on this album is just super toxic, mean spirited or just straight up misogynistic. Drake is still a creep, and I don’t know why Kid Cudi and Jay Z collaborated with this guy. Apart from maybe two or three songs, I’m probably never going to listen to this one again. Oh and the album cover is atrocious.

Donda - Kanye West

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) This album sure is something else man. I absolutely love it, it’s everything I wanted from a new Kanye album tbh. There are still some issues, but what Kanye album doesn’t? This album is better than JIK in every single way: better production, better lyrics, better verses, better everything. This album feels really inspired tbh. Kanye hasn’t rapped or sung like this in a LONG time. All of the features are great too (except maybe Playboi Carti, who I just don’t like at all haha). Again, this album does have some issues. All of the pt. 2’s are pretty unnecessary and should have been released as singles or something probably. Some of the outros are a bit too long and repetitive, and playboi Cartis verses aren’t my favourite. Despite this, I still love this album. It’s gonna be on repeat for a while!

Game of Thrones (Season 2)

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) Man, this is one good show. Everything I said about the first season still applies here, so I won’t repeat myself too much, but man, this is a solid show. My only real complaint with this season is with how one death was handled. I won’t go into specifics, but I thought it was handled pretty poorly. But that’s just one mans opinion, and did not have too big of an effect on my opinion of the show! Some of the characters are fantastic here too. Tyrion is the definitely the strongest character here (partly due to Peter Dinklage’s performance) but there are countless others that are fantastic as well (I loved Arya’s storyline this season) Overall another great season, and I’m excited to see where this one goes!

Game of Thrones (Season One)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) This show really does live up to the hype. This was some seriously great TV! It follows the book really well too, which I always like! There were maybe one or two storylines throughout the season that I thought they put too much emphasis on which really had no impact on the plot, but other than that it was thoroughly enjoyable! It’ll be interesting moving forward in this series as I’m not familiar with any of the other books, but am excited nonetheless!

Superstore - Seasons 1-5

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) I really enjoyed this one! It took me close to a year to finish, but that is not because of its quality! This was just a nice fun watch, nothing more and nothing less! Even though it tackles some pretty tough issues sometimes, it remains a nice and fun watch all the way through! Really my only issue is that I really didn’t like the romance between the leads. I just feel like they weren’t a great fit for each other, but that’s just me I guess haha I haven’t seen the last season though so I guess I’ll see what they do with the relationship then! Overall a very good watch!

The Master

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) Paul Thomas Anderson may have cemented himself as my favourite director at this point. While I don’t think this is his strongest movie (or at least it’s not my favourite of his), it’s still a very interesting watch! The strongest parts of this film are the acting performances, the cinematography and the dialogue (which is pretty typical of a PTA film). Honestly a little surprised that neither Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman didn’t win an Oscar for this one. Where this movie lacks in my opinion is how the story progresses. It has a really great concept, that being the relationship between a struggling army vet and a charismatic cult leader, the movie doesn’t really go deep into any concepts. At times it feels more like a “day in the life” type deal, but the cult really doesn’t do anything interesting during the course of the film. Maybe I just don’t understand it, but I found the story to be surprisingly weak in this one. Still, I d...

Magnolia

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) This actually might be the best movie I’ve ever watched. I’m not even exaggerating, I think I found the best movie ever made. Everything about this movie is perfect. I wasn’t even out off by the length of the movie (it’s over three hours long haha) First off, this movie has one of the greatest ensemble casts I’ve ever seen. Tom Cruise, Julianne Moore, William H. Macy, Phillip Seymour Hoffman, John C. Reilly, etc. Every single actor delivers an all star performance. The writing is so so great in this movie too. The way that every story is interconnected is genius, because it is done in a way that is not unrealistic, but comes about naturally. The dialogue is also too notch in this one. The direction is close to flawless. Paul Thomas Anderson is slowly becoming my favourite director. The way the camera moves, the visuals, the use of colours, it’s all beautiful. This movie is ripe with metaphors and symbolism as well. Lots of biblical reference...

True Detective - Season One

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) Well, I found it. I found the best television show ever made! Or at least the best season of a show ever made. My goodness, this show was an absolute masterpiece. Both Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson deliver such phenomenal performances, the writing is top notch, and the direction was incredible (the show benefitted from having the same director direct every episode). The dynamic between the two leads is so entertaining, and created some surprisingly funny moments in such a serious show. It really didn’t feel like your average detective show, and dealt with some really interesting concepts. This show was incredibly dark, and there were times where it was genuinely frightening too. There were a couple scenes in particular that were pretty freaky honestly haha but seriously, this might just be the best show I’ve ever watched. Sadly I’ve heard that the second and third seasons aren’t as great, so I’m not in a huge rush to watch those. B...

Black Widow

⭐ 5.5/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) I’m really glad that Black Widow finally got a solo movie, I just wish that it would’ve been better. It’s not the worst MCU movie (I still think Ragnarok is the worst), but it’s definitely a bottom tier Marvel movie. I’ll start with the positives: I thought that the acting was all really really good. Scarlett Johansson, Florence Pugh and David Harbour are all really great here. The rest of the actors are fine too. There’s also one moment in the movie that I found genuinely funny, and it actually had me laughing too! I’m sorry to say that those are some of the only positives that I can think of. I had a lot of issues with this movie. First off, I thought the action scenes were really poorly done. I’m no fan of shaky cam action, and this movie relies on that. I found the action scenes really disorienting and hard to follow, which was incredibly frustrating. The dialogue was pretty bad at times too. The story was also really lacklustre. I feel l...

The Lighthouse

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) This is definitely one of the most interesting movies I’ve watched recently. I was expecting a more traditional horror film, but I was very glad that I didn’t get that. The two leads were absolutely phenomenal! I’m very happy that Pattinson is getting more respect as an actor, and Willem Dafoe was great as always. The cinematography is stunning, and the set pieces felt so authentic. On a technical level, this film is perfect. There are so many visuals that stick with you for so long after watching this movie (and especially in the last act of the film). Basically everything in this movie could be interpreted in many different ways, which I really liked. I was still very confused after watching this one, so I’m probably going to have to rewatch it again at some point. Definitely not a very mainstream movie, but very unique and interesting

Curb Your Enthusiasm - Season One

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) My goodness this show is funny. I haven’t watched much of Seinfeld, but I’d imagine it’s hilarious if Larry David has anything to do with it. This show is just so so awkward. Like Arrested Development, much of the plots are driven by misunderstandings, which I think is very funny. Watching Larry David interact with the people around him is so funny, as he really doesn’t know how to act appropriately in any given situation. There are a few episodes in this first season that definitely aren’t as strong as others, but I feel like the show will get more consistent as it goes. Highly recommend this one!

I Don’t Hate You - Ogbert the Nerd

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) I couldn’t tell you how I came to find this album, but I can tell you that I love it very much. It’s noisy, chaotic, and wonderful. This album is a break up album, and most of the songs follow this theme very well. The album feels very cohesive, sonically and thematically, which is great for a debut album. This is the album that made me remember how much I love punk rock, and for that I am very grateful.

VINCE STAPLES - Vince Staples

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) I thought this was an absolutely fine album. The production is great, the lyricism is great (but pretty dark sometimes honestly), and I love that Vince leaned more into his melodic side with this one. I was disappointed that two of the tracks were minute long skits because the album itself is only 10 songs long, sitting at about 22 minutes. I remember being very underwhelmed at first because of this, thinking “that’s it?”. But the more I’ve listened to it the more I have come to really appreciate this album so far, and the length really isn’t too big of an issue.

Blade Runner 2049

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by kaelwilton) This was another really really good movie! I thought it was almost as good as the original (almost!). I liked that this movie wasn’t trying to ride the coattails of the original, the story was completely different and it felt like it was still it’s own movie. Denis Villeneuve has become one of my favourite directors working today, so now I’m excited to see what he does with Dune! I also really think Ryan Gosling is a solid actor! Some of the pacing felt a bit weird at times, mainly due to the length of the movie (it’s close to three hours) Overall I really enjoyed this movie!
