Couples Therapy

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Resurrecting my weview as I do when I watch something that really moves me to the point where I’m telling everyone in my life to watch this show. so here goes! This show is precisely what it sounds like. It’s on Crave, and it’s 9-10 30 minute episodes per season, where couples therapist Orna works with 4/5 couples over the course of a year. Tim really pushed back on the show because televised therapy didn’t feel authentic to him, but I just don’t understand how you can watch an entire season (which he didn’t so please just give it a chance) and doubt the sincere healing, authenticity and struggle that a partnership holds. I just finished season 2 and I am so moved by the reality of human trauma, and the resiliency of overcoming the past and choosing to invest in partnership that makes life worth living. It’s seriously just a beautiful show, very thought-provoking, and I’m so invested in these couples. Best show I’ve seen in a long time. Not a...

The Big Brunch

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Coming out of WeView retirement to try and get more people to watch this show so it gets a second season 🤩 This is a competition style reality cooking show, hosted by Dan Levy, with amazing judges who clearly love being there and are brilliant at what they do, and the most incredibly lovable crop of contestants 💕 AND the prize is unreal! 300,000 dollars to invest in their food business (all the competing chefs are entrepreneurs trying to make it in the culinary world)! I loved every second and I’m rooting so hard for everyone and it’s just such a warm fuzzy watch that i needed to share it please watch this

The White Lotus (Season 2)

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Just popping on for my usually bimonthly weview to say I agree with Tim’s review completely and I just think this is the best show I’ve seen this year. I know Andor held that spot for me but I just had SUCH a good time watching these episodes of Lotus, I was genuinely sad to see it end, and I keep wanting to watch it and then being sad when I realize I already have. Jennifer Coolidge is just everything this season, and a surprise visit from Mr. Collins (Tom Hollander) as a gay bestie really was perfection 🙌 I loved these characters, all of their horrific messed up selves, and I was SO entertained. Plus top notch location and some vacation views to dream about, what’s not to love

The Banshees of Inisherin

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Just really enjoyed it and can’t put my finger on all the reasons why. I think it’s easy to relate to someone “simple” and kind, and the movie broke my heart in a lot of ways. I think the fact that I’m still thinking about it speaks to how good it was. I genuinely laughed out loud a lot too! How many movies are this funny and thought-provoking at the same time!? plus it’s beautiful, the accents are fun in themselves and there’s just incredible acting

Marcel The Shell With Shoes On

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Reviewing this solely to bring the collective score up. I watched in on a plane. I cried on said plane. This movie is beautiful and wholesome and I loved every second.

WALL-E

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I’m coming out of semi-WeView retirement just to write this review. I highly recommend coming back to this movie after remembering you didn’t really like it when you first watched it 10 years ago, reluctantly agreeing to watch it when your husband recommends it, and HIGHLY underestimating the movie as a whole. Because oh my goodness this movie is a masterpiece!!! Honestly watching this again was, as cliche as it sounds, a formative experience, and a viewing experience I’ll remember for a long time. As always, Tim’s review says it best but honestly I just can’t believe how invested in (and in love with) a little trash-compacting robot I was in two minutes or less. I will never underestimate Pixar again.

Roma

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This movie is a masterpiece. I don’t have much to say, because I know tim will fill in the blanks with his review! But, I can say I found this to be incredibly real and moving. Something about the really long single-shot scenes really make it feel like you’re just peering into a life. Not to mention the black and white wide shots are STUNNING. SO much to look at, and the scenes look so good I often say wondering how the heck they made this movie! The story is moving and paints a really disconcerting (while still occasionally heartwarming) picture of the relationship between someone who is staff but also basically family. I LOVED the feeling of watching such a long movie and feeling completely drawn in from the opening credits to the final credits. I’m so glad I finally made the time to watch this. One of those movies I’ll be thinking about for a long time.

How To with John Wilson

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Quite honestly I don’t think I gave this show a fair chance. I told Tim I wasn’t interested in watching it, and during the first episode I didn’t really pay attention and thought I didn’t really like it. I was wrong. This show is kind of magical. It’s a 6 episode series where an awkward, dorky documentarian takes simple “how to” tasks, overlays them with footage of real people in the wild (real Humans of New York vibes) and turns each episode into something actually quite meaningful and poignant. It made for some truly funny, shocking and heart-warming watches. Humans are so strange. SO strange. This show made me really really miss the silly little interactions we used to have with people on the day to day, and I finished the season in tears. The humour isn’t always my cup of tea, but man this is beautifully done. Warning: Episode 4 have some truly X-rated (like XXX) (like surprise full frontal action) content, and there are occasional surpris...

Succession (Season 1)

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This show. SO GOOD. The characters are all horrible people and yet I can’t stop rooting for them. SUCH a good story—genuine drama, genuine laughs, genuine twists! Truly amazing television. I can’t wait to see what this group of trash humans does next 🥳

The Wind Rises

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I enjoyed watching this. Honestly I waited too long to review this and I don’t remember specific highlights. The story was cute and the animation was beautiful and I really did have a nice time watching this—it felt like a unique experience for our night in. I think it’s a bit telling that it didn’t leave much of an impact two weeks late, but it was good!

Soul

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This is the best movie I’ve seen in 2020. It was SO GOOD. So much genuine wit and humour, I laughed out loud many times! It’s an absolutely heartwarming story, and I am so glad we spent a part of our Christmas Day watching this. It’s the story of an aspiring jazz musician turned middle school band teacher struggling to find his purpose and live out his dreams. It’s got an uplifting message that left me genuinely inspired! In typical Pixar fashion, the movie was surprising, hilarious, super clever, and fun with incredible music and powerful moments. Yes I cried and was moved and it all just blew me away. WATCH THIS MOVIE TODAY

Sound of Metal

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This movie was a very moving experience. It beautifully puts you in the place of someone experiencing hearing loss, and all the loss that comes along with that. I really do think it’s one of the best things Tim and I watched this year.

The Mandalorian (Season 2)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I mean I didn’t like it as much as I liked the first season. The first few episodes were not as engaging, and I had a hard time staying invested with those first few storylines (I literally still can’t get over Baby Yoda eating that lizard lady’s egg babies and it’s supposed to be cute or something!?!?!) Regardless, it really got good. I’m not a true Star Wars fan but I appreciated the epic appearances, battles and intersection of stories. I still would do just about anything for Baby Yoda. I still often would watch and say “where’s baby yoda? Where is he? Why did they leave him there? Where’s the baby? KEEP HIM WITH YOU YOU IDIOT!” and other exclamations along those lines. It was just the a good time! Plus it’s so fun to watch something your watch partner is SO excited to watch every week. That kinda anticipation is contagious.

The Santa Clause

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Honestly better than I remembered! I laughed out loud a few times, and the nostalgia associated with the movie really does make it even better. A super clever story concept again—who comes up with this stuff!? I wouldn’t be mad to make this a part of our regular Christmas rotation.

Elf

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) The fact that Tim thinks The Santa Clause is better than this movie boggles my mind. This is a true Christmas classic! Lots of genuine humour, wit and cheery Christmas feels. Whoever came up with this storyline is a genius, and whoever cast Will Ferrell is even more of a genius. This movie is just a good time every Christmas!

It’s A Wonderful Life

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This movie is long, and I honestly wasn’t really feeling it this year. Man, am I glad my sister forced us back into this Christmas Eve tradition. This movie is incredible. Heartwarming, funny, charming and meaningful. It’s a powerful reminder of how our lives touch the lives of others, often in ways we can’t fathom. James Stewart is amazing, everyone in this movie is amazing, and it’s truly hard to fathom that this film was made in 1946 and still holds up SO WELL. I think all this reviewing has helped me realize something about myself—I love movies that make me feel something. This film certainly ticks that box and I’ve never made it through a viewing without crying my eyes out at the final scene. A truly perfect Christmas movie. Let the tradition continue.

Klaus

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I’ve been trying to make Tim understand that the weeks leading up to Christmas need to be fully dedicated to Christmas movie content. Klaus was the only one we could agree on tonight. And it was adorable! The first 30 minutes or so had us thoroughly confused, very much wondering how this movie won an Oscar and how the heck this psycho town and terrible human “protagonist” could turn into a Christmas movie? Hey it worked! Somehow this became a truly heartwarming, surprising, tear jerking and wonderful story! MAJOR Emperor’s New Groove vibes throughout. MAJOR. Children’s humour is so weird, but the true message of this one came through loud and clear and I LOVED it. An amazing origin story.

La La Land

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I love this movie. I love the music, I love the cheesy dancing, I love the montages, I love the pure magic chemistry that is Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone together, and I even love the melancholy ending. This movie always moves me, it holds a very very special place in my heart, and for Tim and I. I walked down the aisle to these songs for goodness sake. I was a little less enamoured by this movie on the 6th viewing, but I don’t think I could ever give this less than a 10. A beautiful movie that I’ll love to the end.

Mank

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I mean I feel like this was a good movie but I had a hard time following and I didn’t get all that drawn into it. I think the scene of Mank and Miriam walking around the Hearst Estate is amazing. It’s definitely packed with Old Hollywood Glamour and names I’d heard before and I’m very glad we watched it, because it certainly seems like a movie made for awards season and now I’ve seen it. As much as I feel like I’d get more out of a second viewing I don’t really want to watch it again. Honestly I loved the story and sets mostly cuz of Tim and I’s visit to Hearst castle—so fun to imagine the parties and see them come to life. Shout out to Lily Collins who I think is a pretty terrible actress who was actually lovely in this, A+ British accent!

The Holiday

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This is the perfect Christmas movie and no one will convince me otherwise. This is Jack Black’s apex mountain. He’s witty, charming and loveable—hilarious without being over the top. I think I’ll argue the same (career peak) for Jude Law (what a Daddy dreamboat) and Cameron Diaz. Kate Winslet is just the most perfect heroine, and somehow has such incredible character development in just one quarter of a movie! Brilliant! This film has it all. Heart-warming love stories, perfectly hateable villains, ADORABLE Physiotherapy training montages, and the best child actors I’ve ever seen. Movie MVP: Arthur Abbott (obviously) I always kick off the Christmas movie watching season with this one, because it just doesn’t get better than this. I think I could happily watch it five times a holiday season. The movie rental music scene is iconic. Had to mention this before signing off.
