Soul

I loved this movie! Kind of like a more existential version of Inside Out, this movie was thoughtful and creative throughout, subverting where I thought it might go at every turn. The musical score was noticeably incredible as well, combining jazz music with this futuristic other-worldly sound.

In classic Pixar fashion, this one had me feeling emotional in ways I don't often feel watching a movie. It had me thinking about the snapshots that have formed my life, what my sparks are, and what my purpose is. I mean, if a movie has you asking these questions, mission accomplished.

I really just loved the world they built. Their idea of how souls form and what happens when you die and the creatures that live in this reality are just so creative and interesting. The interaction between our world and that world is also pretty well thought out, and provides some really great moments throughout.

I did have a hard time imagining a child loving this movie. There are goofy portions, and maybe I am out of touch, but this one seemed super high concept in a way I don't think other Pixar movies are. That's not a criticism, just a note. One part in particular, when a bully basically ends up in the sunken place from Get Out, I found pretty terrifying. That guy is going to be scarred for life but they play it off for comedy and never address it.

My one star off would be just because I didn't love it enough that I feel like I need to watch it again. But it was such a treat on Christmas day, I have zero complaints.
