Lord of the Flies - William Golding

⭐ 4.5/10 (Originally written by Chaives) First I must say I know many people read this book in high school English class. It was not part of my curriculum though so I’ve never read it before. I’ve heard there was a movie but I’ve also never watched it.  Lord of the Flies appears on a list I have of “100 epic reads of a lifetime”. So I chose to listen to the audiobook the other day at work.  And wow. Let me tell you, I kind of knew what I was expecting but still.  The story follows a group of British boys being flown away to safety during the Great War. Their plane crashes (was shot? Mechanical failure? Unknown) down and the survivors are stranded on a deserted island with only adolescent boys, the oldest being aged 12. Basically the novel is an illustration of a society without laws, and the devolution of humankind into savagery without civilized society. The book itself was written well, and was definitely an interesting, albeit slightly horrific, read. But I have o...

Lolita - Vladimir Nabokov

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by Chaives) The most disgusting masterpiece of language I have ever read.

Fleabag (entire) [SPOILERS]

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Chaives) I binged this Netflix original months ago. I haven’t written a review because I didn’t know how to. It seemed somehow too blasphemous to really rate. I felt like that kid from the beginning of John Mulaney’s Sack Lunch Bunch , “‘so what’s the tone of this? Ironic or for real?’” Because the opening sequence is the main character getting railed, totally breaking 4th wall talking to the audience about the dude she’s with? I was super confused. But this show has stuck with me. It struck me in such a way that I still think about scenes from it months later anyway. It’s a tough show to watch. It’s cringey and maddening and heart breaking. But I think that’s what makes it so incredibly amazing. It’s full of stories of real life shit. But it’s also full of character development, and moments of humanity that remind you: we are all human, and we are all going through different phases of life, so don’t judge a book by its cover - or don’t judge a tv show b...

Onward

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Chaives) The new Disney/Pixar movie Onward has everything you expect in a classic Disney movie except with more Dungeons & Dragons so it’s way cooler than any Disney movie you’ve seen before. The story follows two brothers on a harrowing quest to spend one final day with their late father. This movie has meaningful, and heartwarming underlying messages of the power of brotherly love, and of believing in yourself to your fullest capabilities. Onward captures the essence of a bond that is forged through fire in a tale alight with magic, mystery, laughs, and in the end — tears. A must watch for people who love family movies.

The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina (seasons 1-3 SPOILERS)

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Chaives) The Netflix original, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina , or CAOS, as it is aptly acroynmned - follows the truly chaotic life of the teenage half-witch, half-mortal, Sabrina Spellman as she tries to walk the paths of both light and darkness. Throughout the series, we follow Sabrina as the two halves of her life become irrevocably tangled in the enchanting little town of Greendale. Sabrina faces challenges of both mortal and damning magnitudes - from daily life being a teenager (ugh, am I right?) to being the queen of hell. Do you love watching shows that make you afraid when things go bump in the night? Then you should watch CAOS. Overall, the storyline is compelling. The writers have created an immersive setting that allows the viewer to feel grounded even through the existence of witches. Put simply, your suspension of disbelief need not be strained in order to enjoy the show. Although the storyline follows female teenager Sabrina, the conten...
