Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I was completely taken off guard by how much I loved this movie on rewatch. Along with Half Blood Prince, I think this one just nails the atmosphere, nails the emotional moments, and nails the conclusion. Does it all make perfect sense? Definitely not, but when Harry was talking to his family about what it's like to die, I felt tears welling up and forgot all about the holes. This movie is just an epic and gripping conclusion to one of the best stories ever told. I am just going to pretend that horrendous final scene doesn't exist.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 1

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I have to skip my Half Blood Prince review because I fell asleep during it, which sucks because I love that movie and wanted to comment on how much I love scenes and think the decision to kill of Dumbledore was amazing. For the record, a 9/10 for me I think. This movie is kinda just okay for me. I love the atmosphere and the kids going it alone, but most of the best scenes happen in the latter half of the book, so those get cut off. Also, as the books become more mature, the plot holes and incomprehensible magic system start to stand out whereas the early books/movies it just didn't matter.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This one starts off with a BANG when the second best character Dudley Dursley makes fun of the lozer Harry Potter because his mom is dead (got em!). This is followed by the best scene, which is a brief cameo by the best character, Vernon Dursley, who like me loves Sundays because you don't get mail. The movie unfortunately takes a turn for the worse for the next 2.5 hours with only one good 30 second fight scene between the third best character (Dumbledore) and Voldemort, who is actually a pretty good villain in a movie full of terrible, terrible villains. Sorry folks, but that pink lady being annoying doesn't make her a good villain . It just makes her annoying.

Shanghai Noon

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Part 2 of my Jackie Chan kick (and it doesn't end here!) and I actually really liked this one. The action isn't quite as impressive as a lot of his Chinese movies, but it's still awesome and makes up the difference by being legitimately funny with Owen Wilson being a lot better than I remembered. It also intersected with my current love of Westerns, so this really was the perfect movie for me right now.

Leeland - Sound of Melodies

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by The_John) Man, for being 14 years old this album has really held up well. Leeland's first album is what opened me up to actually liking worship-style music and I still LOVE this one. Hearing some good sounding electric guitar has made me realize what I've been missing.

Community (Season 4)

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) i’m feeling too lazy to write a real review about this but I agree 100% with everything Tim wrote in his. Not as good as the past seasons, but still a few golden moments.

Amelie

⭐ 5.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) This is a movie about a quirky socially awkward French woman, who doesn't really know how to interact with people so she meddles in their lives all in an attempt to find... Love? I didn't really enjoy it. The frantic pace the movie starts with is pretty exciting, but I just cared less and less about her and the weird people in her life as the movie went along. I also didn't love the style of the movie. Kind of a Wes Anderson quirkiness (can't think of any other word for it) with the saturation filter on Instagram turned up to 100%. The charm wears off really quickly, and I was not sure what she was trying to accomplish. She has this child like wonder, but she is anything but innocent, and can be kind of cruel to some people. A pretty unique watch for sure, just not for me I guess.

Community (Season 4)

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) The creator and head writer of the show was fired for this season, and it shows. The first couple episodes are actually pretty solid, better than I remember, but the back half of the shortened season is pretty weak, attempting to play off previous plotlines and not really pulling off the new ideas. Still enjoyed it, just not at the high bar it is usually at. A glaring weak spot is a forced relationship between 2 of the gang. It's is just totally unbelievable, and they spend all season barely even acting like a couple. A strange decision that doesn't have any pay off and does not seem at all compatible given what we have seen from them so far. So a let down of a season, but still some laughs and memorable episodes. Shows the importance a showrunner can have, one cohesive vision.

Amelie

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This is a quirky, cheerful movie that I’ve had recommended to me many times. I found the whole thing to be quite charming start to finish. I really enjoyed the watch—felt like something I would typically choose but was not what I expected.

Douglas - Hannah Gadsby

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by KathleenQ) (Netflix comedy special) Absolute perfection. Gadsby is a master comedy writer and performer. Solid gold from beginning to end. Her first mind-blowing special, Nanette, made me gasp and cry as well as laugh, as she focused her lasers on patriarchy and shared her experiences as a gender-nonconforming lesbian. I had HIGH expectations going into this one, and she actually EXCEEDED them. In this show, she shares hysterical anecdotes as she realizes and comes to terms with the fact that she's autistic. This show was funnier than the first and really just showcased her mastery of the art. Just... go watch it. (But if you haven't watched Nanette, watch that first.)

Wow, No Thank You - Samantha Irby

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This is a collection of funny essays by a fat, queer, black woman who self-identifies as a piece of human garbage. Like, so lazy, a slob, and incompetent, but also struggling with a few chronic diseases and depression. At first I was a little put off by how much of a mess she is, but then I ended up appreciating how honest she is, and that she was admitting to doing and thinking so many embarrassing things that I also think/do. She talks a lot about her terrible love life, and also diarrhea, but that's part of her chronic illness and so very relevant for her. She also grew up extremely poor and still is pretty poor because she doesn't like working (relateable), and her stories of the struggle just got me. This book had so many lol moments, and sometimes I would re-listen to a chapter with Becky, just like watching stand-up together. She's pretty crass, but nothing I couldn't handle. And just so brutally honest to the point of ...

The Godfather - Mario Puzo

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) My hopes were high for the book, since the movie is considered to be the best of all time, and I was not disappointed. My review is probably slightly biased by the movie, but the author wrote the screenplay as well and the two really are the same piece. I was delighted to find that all the best moments and quotes from the movie are all here, and the book really does play out like a more in-depth version of the movie. We spend a lot more time with characters caught in the Godfather's web, which really helps to emphasize his influence. We also get a ton of backstory on all the characters in the Corleone family, adding a lot more colour to people I barely remembered from the movie. In particular we spend a lot of time with Johnny Fontane, a Sinatra-esque character through whom we see how powerful the Godfather really is. I could not put this book down, the anticipation of knowing what's coming not spoiling the story, but enhancing it. The...

After Life season 2

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by The_John) I absolutely love Ricky Gervais. I don't usually love sad shows/movies but the humour and touching moments are just so brilliant. Minus a star for the idiot therapist and the fact that anyone pays to talk to him.

After Life season 2

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Dang, this one is hard for me to give a rating. On the one hand, the acting is absolutely incredible, it's so powerful, there are some beautiful relationships, and I mostly love Ricky Gervais' humour. On the other hand, it is achingly sad. Like, I wanted to sob every episode. Also, the therapist is literally one of the worst characters I've encountered (and not even because I'm in the same field). He's disgusting and not funny at all.

Police Story

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is a classic Chinese film and I watched it because I appreciate how other cultures have unique artistic output. Jk, it's a Jackie Chan movie and I watched it cuz I love watching Jackie kick ass. This was one of his earliest movies, and by many considered his best. I'll admit, the plot and didn't really do it for me, mostly because I could hardly tell any characters apart and couldn't differentiate their names, so when it was revealed that certain characters were double agents, I was mostly just trying to remember who was on what side in the first place. The comedy aspect also didn't really do it as there were some very dated jokes, and most of the funny scenes had nothing to do with the plot. It was basically like 15 minute comedy intermissions. But the action really comes through. The last 30 minutes is one mind melting fight scene with all the classic Jackie elements. It only made me appreciate it more when I learned th...

New Girl - Season 1 and 2

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Jess) This show is okkkk. I’m waiting for it to get better so we’ll see if I finish it. I mostly just watch it as I do other things, something I don’t have to have my complete attention on.

Great Canadian Bake Show: Season 1 and 2

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) Man what a great show. I’ve never been more invested in people in a show before. By the end, I was a master, yelling at them that they’re making a mistake and what they should be doing. Dan Levy is a host and he is amazing.

Beautiful Boy

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) If you want to watch a movie that will make you feel everything, this is the movie for you. This one hit me harder than I thought it would, I think because of my uncle being in a similar situation. I haven’t felt this strongly about a movie in a while. It’s also based on a memoir which made me love it even more. plus: Steve Carell

Pocahontas

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Jess) What a great movie. The songs are amazing. But why she did she choose a white dude?? Ugh.

Inception

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Jess) Another Leo movie. So much better. I really like this movie, even though it’s not really my typical genre. I just like the idea behind it and that the end is up for interpretation (but I hate it at the same time).

The Aviator

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) I did not enjoy this movie at all, even though I love Leo. It made me so incredibly uncomfortable that I couldn’t even finish it. Don’t get me wrong it was a great movie, but he does TOO good of a job at acting.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) I enjoyed this movie a lot. I thought it was really engaging and the effects were cool.

Robin Hood (1973)

⭐ 6.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) It was meh.

Spy

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Jess) So much better than The Heat. She’s so funny and so is Jason Statham. I was surprised that I didn’t mind the violence that much, maybe because I knew what was coming. Good comedy movie.

Topper Returns

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) One of my childhood favourites. I love the humour and the light-hearted murder mystery.

The Westing Game - Ellen Raskin

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) Read this book when I was 13ish, randomly thought about it yesterday, decided to reread out loud with Maggie over the span of 12 hours. Absolutely worth it. One of the first mysteries I read, about 16 people being told they're the heirs of a rich man who's just died, and that one of them took his life--and if they can solve the mystery, they get the $200 mil. My mind was blown at the time, and it really held up. I was making guesses the entire time, and loved piecing things together and being surprised by new clues. I vaguely remembered a few details, which was nice because I didn't feel so confused at the end. It's a big ensemble cast but you really get to know all of them. A quick read, but still really satisfying, and surprisingly funny! Warning for some 70s-typical language surrounding disabilities, ha.

Mockingjay - Suzanne Collins

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) Although I didn’t like this one as much as the first two, I have come to appreciate the complexity and messiness of the story. Trying to be the face of a rebellion meanwhile dealing with so many inner demons and ghosts. The Peeta bit really hit hard and then Prim’s arc just sent me over the rails 😭 but it was *somewhat* redeeming when Coin and Snow both met their ends. I didn’t love the epilogue either, but I understand where she was going with it. This series is just so near and dear to me, I’m so glad I reread it.

Dedicated Side B - Carly Rae Jepsen

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) Most people know CRJ from her smash hit Call Me Maybe (that song came out in 2011 btw, just to age you all a bit), and most write her off as a one hit wonder and it is a shame because she’s actually an incredible pop artist. She writes most of her own music and can for real sing. This album comes out a year after she released Dedicated, and she’s truly a force to be reckoned with. She has a really airy, bubbly voice that goes great with her synth-esque style of pop. Windows, Fake Mona Lisa, and Comeback really shine on this album.

The Art of Hearing Heartbeats

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) A really beautifully written book that kept my attention and interest the entire time, but for some reason I just didn't love it. I think in the end I was still just too ticked off at her dad for leaving the way he did, regardless of the reason.

Outlander - Diana Gabaldon

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by KathleenQ) This is one of those books that I just felt I should read because it's super-popular and in a genre I love (speculative fiction). I just thought I ought to give it a try, you know? It's a real genre mashup, with elements of fantasy/science fiction (time travel), historical fiction (it mostly takes place in a very realistic and heavily-researched 18th-century Scotland), and romance (LOTS of steamy sex). It has action and adventure, gory violence, and even a prison heist. Every major character almost dies (of public execution, battle wounds, torture, starvation, etc) multiple times. It has... a lot. Just a lot. I have very mixed feelings about it. It has some seriously impressive qualities as well as some serious problems; elements that I loved and elements that I hated. One important feature -- and a major flaw, in my opinion -- it that's it just way too long. I don't object to long novels as a rule; but this book is just hugely...

Community (Season 3)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) These first three seasons have been consistently very good. While I didn't love how far the stray from campus this season, it's features many of the best episodes, and possibly the best one of the series with Remedial Chaos Theory. All the things I love about the show are here again this season. They build up to this heist movie style finale and I didn't think it totally landed for some reason. But that is a minor blemish on another hilarious season.

The Eye of the World - Robert Jordan

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I read this because I'm a supportive wife (as I have with most fantasy books Tim has recommended to me). So far, he's been super successful in getting me hooked on his fantasy favourites. It's my least favourite of his recommendations I've read so far, but it's still quite good. I felt like it just took the author a LOT of words to accomplish NOT very much. The book was a bit slow to get started, and then stayed kinda slow. The characters are great though, and I felt invested enough to keep reading. Glad I did because book 2 is already better than the first. Am I 12-more-books-in-this-13-book-Wheel-of-Time-saga level invested? Only time will tell. The pattern weaves as it will or something like that.

The Mandalorian (Season 1)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I never felt super compelled to keep watching this show. I'm not that invested in the universe, and I didn't get "hooked" like many I know who watched it. This show gets an 8 because BABY YODA. I don't think I've ever felt more maternal in my life than I felt watching these episodes. I do think there were some pretty amazing episodes. I did really like 1 and 6-8, I definitely felt like the season ramped up to some good stuff. In summary...bring baby yoda to me and I will raise him as my own. Did I mention I LOVE THE BABY YODA.

Community (Season 3)

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I find it really difficult to review seasons of television, because I can't really remember where this one started and 2 ended, or where this one ended and 4 began. Regardless Tim and I pounded through this season at an alarming rate because I was LOVING it. It was all I wanted to watch---between LOST and The Mandalorian, I picked this season of Community every time. It had some truly awesome episodes, genuine humour and it's just so fun to watch. Abed is easily the best character, no contest. Somebody give that man a spinoff with Childish Gambino please.

Uncharted: Drake's Fortune

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is a game about a treasure hunter, and the plot felt like an homage to movies like Indiana Jones or the all time classic National Treasure. The protagonist is a handsome, suave, and talented action hero that goes along with the genre, though I admit he only has half the word assosiation skills of Nic Cage. It's a short, linear, story driven game that is propelled by cinematics, which has become my favorite genre. It combines platforming and puzzles with shooting guns, which is a pretty standard recipe from Naughty Dog, but I must admit the volume of shooting sequences just doesn't fit in with the story here. Often the game felt like the platforming was used just to get you to the next shooting gallery. The voice acting and motion capture were incredible and sorta revolutionized these types of video games. It makes it feel like you're playing a role in a movie. And if this game was a movie... Well it would still be a below average...

Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I remember seeing this movie on TV as a kid and hating it, not liking the dub or the weird flying action. Even though the flying is the movie's trademark, I still just looks silly to me. But I watched the sub rather than dub, so that part was solved. But now as an adult it's easier to appreciate the artistic form of this movie. Some of the shots are breathtaking, and the action (outside of the flying) is incredible. There is a sequence near the end that rivals the best Jackie Chan fight scenes. I also like that in international movies the plot is less predictable because it doesn't rely on western tropes. Overall, a really great watch.

Catching Fire - Suzanne Collins

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) Another knock out read. I’ve become so obsessed with these books again that it’s all I think about. I’m asking everyone what their strategy in the games would be, how long they thing they would last, stuff like that. They really delved into some deep topics in this one and were able to flesh it out more: poverty, PTSD, propaganda, hope, and other very real issues. The Quarter Quell felt like the biggest twist in history. The new characters were all amazing and there were so many memorable moments in the games. I just can’t get over how complex the arc, story and characters are. Can’t wait to read the last one and have my heart broken again 😭

The Last Dance

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) Coming from a non-basketball fan - I loved this show. There wasn't much basketball, and the clips there were mostly went over my head since I don't know enough about the game to know when to be impressed. It mostly focused on relational stuff which is what I was there for. I loved learning more about players I'd never heard of. I also agree that I was expecting to be lot more critical of Michael Jordan after this but I just couldn't be. The footage just didn't show the monster I was expecting and players alluded to. Overall, I just thought it was an incredibly well done show that really held my interest throughout.

Snatch

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) This movie was truly a wild ride start to finish. A little too bloody and cavalier about death for my tastes, even for a movie about criminals, but also surprisingly fun in spite of that. Follows several interconnected plots surrounding a stolen diamond, and none of them ever go where you expect them to. I laughed out loud at a couple of the twists and the directing was incredible, even to me, a dumb person. But a lot of people die and I just don't really vibe with that.

The Last Dance

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) Another 10! This doc filled the void left from the NBA season, and it is hard to give it anything other than a perfect score. I have an old box set with Michael Jordan's top 5 games in full, plus 6 different documentaries, so a 10 hour documentary was a dream come true and a return to my childhood. He was always a mythical figure in my life, since I never watched him while he was still active, yet everything in the NBA is still in his shadow, and I idolized him as a kid. The hype cycle for this doc kind of hurt my viewing a bit here. Everyone was saying there will be tons of never before seen footage, and that when it is over you will hate MJ (notoriously a bully). There was some really cool new footage, but not nearly enough to satisfy me. And this doc is clearly an autobiography, and all of Mike's shortcoming bolster the idea that he is the ultimate champion. Kind of an ends justifying the means thing, and I wish it could have been...

The Last Dance

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I was probably harder on this documentary than most. I felt like it was a 10 hour Jordan Brand commerical, and I felt like there should have been more of a focus on MJ's personal life as the series didn't once mention the fact that he got married and had 2 kids. I also feel like it suffered from MJ approving all the footage and never allowed us a full look into the tyrant that was hinted at so often. There was a great opportunity to portray a complex human, but instead they just went the route of chalking everything up to him wanting to win (that's a VERY positive virtue in sports, for all you non-sports people) and spinning everything as a a net positive, all contributing to his god-like mythos. But man, he was just such a magnetic figure and throughout and it made me constantly want to overlook the shortcomings. Everything about him is attractive, from the way he plays (or even runs down the court) to the way he works hard off of i...

The Last Dance

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Honestly I can’t complain about this series! As someone who is married to a true MJ aficionado, it really is shocking how little I knew about Jordan’s run and legacy. I had SO MUCH FUN watching this every week, and I awaited Monday’s with so much anticipation. There’s a subtle (ok pretty clear) MJ bias in the show, but I learned so much, was introduced to some new people (Phil Jackson hello) and players (Scottieeeee) I now love and I just think that era in basketball was a TON of fun to watch. I enjoyed every moment and I very much enjoyed reliving this with Tim—made it a 10/10 viewing experience for sure. Genuinely sad to see it end.

Alpha

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) I'll be the first to admit I was obsessed with stories about animals saving humans as a kid, and that I LOVE a good human-wolf bond. But I spent most of this movie ragging on it, to be honest. It was gorgeous, and I truly did want them both to survive and get home, but I was so distracted by things that felt absurdly unrealistic. Especially why this kid kept on trying to make progress on his journey home IN A SNOWSTORM? I feel like, during this time period when literally all you do is try to survive, he'd know more about sheltering in place. He would have died of hypothermia a hundred times. But still. I really do love a survival story. I would rather just reread Julie of the Wolves though. Now THERE'S a story.

Well, That Was Awkward - Rachel Vail

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) This book was SUCH a delight. This is definitely a book aimed at middle schoolers, centering around a group of 13-14 year olds, but I found it just as wonderful as an adult. I was kind of hesitant when Maggie suggested reading it out loud together, because it totally just seemed like an average book about kids with crushes on classmates, but it was genuinely so funny and so charming and so engaging. I absolutely loved the main character, who felt realistically young without feeling TOO young to relate to--and I related to her a lot, with her sweatiness and compulsive joke-making and love for tortoises. And I loved all of her friends, and that the book accurately portrayed the way friend groups intermingle at school. I loved the themes of friendship and love, and I BAWLED at some of the parent-child stuff. I cried you guys. While Maggie read to me. I loved that it was such an enjoyable, laugh-out-loud read, but also still so moving. I felt like ...

Tweet Cute - Emma Lord

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This is a YA rom-com, and it did a very good job of being that. Pepper's mom owns a chain burger restaurant, and always gets Pepper to run the Twitter account because she's so good at snark, even though she's busy trying to get into an Ivy League school. But then she gets in a Twitter war with a local restaurant that goes viral, and finds out the boy on the other end is her thorn-in-her-side class clown classmate. They agree to continue with their Twitter battle and get closer as they do. This book was a hoot, and I thought the relationship was done well. I liked both of the leads, and thought their relationship was believable, as they slowly got to know each other, become friends, and then more. They both had their own other issues to deal with - having a cooler twin, grades, pressure from parents - and it felt realistic that these teens were juggling so much. Also the way their phones and social media was such a huge part of thei...

El Deafo - Cece Bell

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) A semi-autobiographical graphic novel about a girl (except everyone is anthropomorphized bunnies) who loses her hearing due to illness at a young age, and has to deal with getting hearing aids, learning to lip read, and be "that deaf girl." She struggles to make true friends because kids just don't know how to treat a deaf person. I think it's a great way to introduce kids to people with different disabilities and how to treat them. And I genuinely was rooting for her to make a great friend!

Mighty Joe Young

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Will) Just as good as it was the first 5 times I watched it as a kid (my movie selection was limited), and I still can't get through it without crying.

Apocalypse Now

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) It's so hard for me to rate a movie like this. It is considered one of the greatest movies ever made, and it's clear to see why. It is in all ways an artistic masterpiece when it comes to visuals, audio, writing and acting. You identify with the main character even as he feels and thinks things you couldn't possibly identify with. Yet I have a tough time actually saying I enjoyed it. I felt sick to my stomach for much of it, or dizzy or like I was on drugs or like I was losing my mind. It is a movie made up of all the scenes that make you most uncomfortable from Life of Pi, Lord of the Flies, or even now The Aviator. But I know that's the whole point of the movie, especially emphasizing the horrors of war. Part of me really loved it, but I also know I could never recommend this movie to anyone unless they enjoy these kinds of artistic endeavors. It's almost like a disturbing, but brilliant abstract painting. This movie feels l...

Spy

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Jess has been going on a Melissa McCarthy binge and I've just been here enjoying the ride. I mean, it wouldn't have been my choice to watch 3 of her movies in as many weeks, but I do think she's pretty funny, and this one along with Bridesmaids were the best (I didn't review that one cuz I was asleep for the first 30 mins or so...). I love that they played on common spy movie tropes while also making a really good spy movie. It gets a little dicey at times to make it a true recommendation, but overall I thought it was really great.

Topper Returns

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This 80 year old movie was a childhood favorite of Jess's. I'm not sure it qualifies as a classic since I had never actually heard of it previously, but it was pretty good. It was funny and whimsical, but also a little silly. Either way, a nice way to pass an hour and a half.

Alpha

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) A movie set 20,000 years ago, about a boy who gets separated from his tribe and is trying to find his way back with the help of a wolf. Who doesn't love a good survival story? (As long as it's not too gory, which this one is not.) It's a pretty quiet movie, since it's mostly the boy and his wolf, which allows lots of debate on how hard it would actually be to find a small tribe in the wilderness and if a wolf would get tame that fast. And also about gender norms 20,000 years ago. Some things made me suspicious, but what the heck do I know about how people behaved in that era? Anyway, the CGI was mostly awesome, with lots of beautiful shots, and I was really invested in that "boy and his dog" relationship. Warning: scenes of trying to survive during the winter may give you traumatic flashbacks.

The Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) I’m re-reading these in preparation for the new book, and it may be possible I love them even more now. This series is easily in my top 10 all time favourite books. Since reading them for the first time I have read countless analysis on the series that makes me appreciate them even more. Miss Collins really is a genius, and I think she has honed her craft expertly. The world is incredible. It’s far enough from realty that it’s enjoyable but also close enough that it makes it feel real, as if it could happen in real life. The characters are multi-dimensional, and she does a great job of giving non conventional gender roles to her characters: Katniss comes off as expression-less and stoic, whereas Peeta is vulnerable and soft. I truly feel like this may be the best book written of my generation. Or at least the 2000s. I still got chills when she volunteered and when Rue died. Slide into my DMs for further THG discourse plz

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season 7

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Loved it! Exactly what I was looking to watch before bed each night. Tempted to rewatch the entire series, which I never do.

Nemesis - Isaac Asimov

⭐ 6.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) Easily my least favorite Asimov book so far. I was engaged right off the bat with the premise, as a hidden star is found to be approaching Earth and will essentially destroy it in 5000 years. I also liked the structure of the story, with two story lines, one present day and one past, that slowly converge. The characters in this book are all pretty similar, and all pretty annoying. Lot's of Asimov is two people in a room bouncing theories off each other given the limited information they have. In this one, however, since you know what happens in the present, people in the past hypothesizing on what's to come is frustrating, since you the reader know what is coming. Just seemed like a lot of wasted chapters, and probably could have been a more satisfying read as a short story - the Wikipedia summary is only a couple sentences. The ending was pretty anticlimactic, and none of the characters had any sort of redemption. So the score is basically ...

Scales & Scoundrels Volume 1: Into the Dragon's Maw - Sebastian Girner and Galaad

⭐ 6.0/10 (Originally written by Lydia) SPOILER ALERT: I heard that the main character turned into a dragon but my mom wasn't convinced by the end of it. Until we saw the second one.

Pocahontas

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Hard to judge this movie. I don't want to be the guy to score something low because it deviates from the source material, but I feel like it's different when that source material is history and it gives a happy ending to a story that is not happy. Still, as a story in and of itself, it's a nice one if you can ignore some of the absurdity (why can the whole tribe speak English?!). Beyond that, the music in this movie is just so amazing which negates any other judgements. Except for Mel Gibson's insanely fluctuating accent - there is no excuse for that.

Awakenings

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is a Robin Williams and Robert De Niro movie about the true story of a doctor who was able to find a cure for specific patients who had been in a cationic state for decades, allowing them to come back. The premise is really crazy, and even crazier because it was true. It's one of those movies like Still Alice or Me Before You that you can never forget because the premise is so unthinkable yet grounded in reality. De Niro is incredible in this movie and he deservedly won best actor as a result. This movie will make you cry so viewer beware, it's a heavy watch. I only hesitate to give it 10 because I felt there were a few moments that were a little cheesy and also some parts that were a bit inconsistent.

The Heat

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I had zero expectations, and although this movie isn't good by any standards, it has its moments

Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) A documentary on the making of Apocalypse Now, I had seen clips of it on YouTube after watching Apocalypse Now and had been interested in watching the whole thing for a while. Then I realized that a Community episode was a homage to this documentary, and I felt even more inspired to watch it. Unfortunately, Abed was wrong. The documentary is not better than the movie. It was very interesting for sure, and not surprising that such a wild movie had such a troubled production. Way over budget, and going way longer than scheduled, everyone working on the movie seemed to go as crazy as the people in the movie. Seriously, I am worried about the souls of some of the people involved in this movie, all losing their mind in the jungle. The directors wife, Eleanor Coppola, recorded the footage and interviews for the documentary, and it was cool to see how their family all lived in the Philippines during the troubled production. It's too bad she is a roboti...

The Hobbit (Revised Edition) - J.R.R Tolkien, David Wenzel, Chuck Dixon

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is the graphic novel adaptation of the Hobbit. It was a great way to reread The Hobbit which was something I'd been meaning to do. The illustrations are fantastic, and of course the story is an all-time classic. I especially appreciated on reread how there is a bit of complexity to the plot, and it doesn't just end how you would think it would if you were 10 pages into a children's novel. With that that, my favorite part of The Hobbit above anything has always been Tolkien's writing style, and I felt like the adaptation lost some of that. Maybe I'm just a purist, but I missed some of the fun meanderings and dialogue from the original. Still, an awesome book overall, but falls a tad short of the 10 I'd give the original.

The Half Of It

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by KathleenQ) I loved it! Sweet and charming. The film managed to take familiar rom-com tropes and make them feel fresh and contemporary, and I truly didn't know where it was going to go. The lead actor/character was great. The climax in the church with everyone giving spontaneous speeches was a little silly but I was willing to overlook it because everything else was so well-executed.

Super Mario Maker 2

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) A sandbox game that lets you construct your own Mario levels, I probably play this game wrong. I haven't made my own level yet, but I completed the story mode and really enjoyed the varied styles and mechanics level to level. Hearing all the old musical cues and seeing all the familiar level designs really brings me back, and nostalgia would prevent me from ever rating this low. I have also enjoyed playing other levels made by random people, some of which are stupidly difficult and just unfair, but others that are really well thought out and satisfying to beat. Setting a world record on a course feels pretty incredible, even if it gets beat by someone else minutes later. Maybe one day the creative juices will be flowing and I will construct my masterpiece. Until I do this review is pretty incomplete.

Community (Season 2)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) Another excellent season, building on the first and flexing with what they are willing to do episode to episode. Again, there are tons of amazing episodes based on specific movies or shows, and a bunch of celebrity cameos. The characters start to grow a lot more this season, and its self-awareness prevents it from getting cheesy. Just a delightfully quirky and funny show that I can't get enough of.

The Jane Austen Project - Kathleen A. Flynn

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) This book was incredibly unexpected. I mean first of all, time travel and Jane Austen in the same book! I just couldn't guess at all where it was headed ever - it was an exciting read. I didn't love the main characters though, unfortunately. Very cool read though and I got to think about the implications of memory and the past in regards to time travel.

The Matrix

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) I was telling Jess and Joe that it felt like someone had sped up the simulation lately cause time was going by so fast and naturally that led me to watch this movie. Guys, my first time ever! I knew all the iconic stuff, like the pills and stopping the bullets, but it was so cool. The effects, the characters, the story, the idea! So radical. This movie was made in ‘99 and it definitely has that older film vibe but it still obviously holds up. I can’t imagine having watched this when it first came out - at the turn of the millennium no less! All in all, really incredible. I loved everything about it except maybe a smudge less foreboding :)

Lost (Season 4)

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) The best season, maybe featuring my favourite TV episode of all time. The shortened season forces the story to be a bit tighter, but in typical lost fashion for every question they answer two more are asked. After four seasons the show knows what it's common beats and structure are, and it uses our expectations of these things to subvert them in very satisfying ways. The sci fi elements really start to peak out, and make the show way more exciting in my opinion. The finale is three episode long, and is a real adrenaline rush as many plot threads all come together at once. Just a really awesome show hitting it's stride.

Community (Season 2)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Just so much fun. I love these characters 85% of the time and I love Abed 100% of always. Whenever we sit down to watch something my first choice has pretty much always been Community. Genuinely funny, super memorable, with so many episodes that are ridiculous concepts that somehow turn out amazing. I love this show, and I tolerate Pierce (his comments don’t land and are really not ok thus we lose a star).

Lost (Season 4)

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) I honestly think this show just keeps getting better! Some truly amazing episodes that I’ll remember for a long time, and mysteries that just keep getting deeper and more complicated. I think the flash forwards are a stroke of absolute genius. I want answers.

Star Wars: The Clone Wars (Season 3)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) The best season yet, mainly because it dove in to the back story of it's villains. Seeing more about Asajj Ventress was really cool, and the storyline leading up to the introduction of Savage Opress was the best arc of the season. The first episode is also one of the best of the series so far, making you care for the people behind the clone trooper armour. Unfortunately there are still a bunch of two episode arcs that are just going to a planet, fighting a battle, leaving. In general I am still really enjoying this show and the connections it makes to the main series. Every time Anakin does something bad they play the Vader music and I get chills. Excited to see what's next.

Out of My Mind - Sharon Draper

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Evelyn) This book was so real and I cried with both happiness and sadness a couple of times. I think it was really good!

The BFG - Roald dahl

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Evelyn) This book is very interesting and I was always eager to see what happened next. This book is about two best friends who never meant to be friends. And the two friends were a human and a giant.

Esio trot - Roald dahl

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Evelyn) This book is interesting but not as interesting most other Roald dahl books. This book was also a bit shorter then the other books by Roald dahl. It is about man named Mr .Hoppy who is in love with his neighbor Mrs. Silver, but she is in love with Alfie, her pet tortoise. How can Mr hoppy get her attention?

The Crown - Season 2

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I find this show similar to Madmen in a way. I know that it's good and well made. The acting is terrific and the writing is smart. But it's just not an entertaining show and I never want to watch it. I like it enough while I watch, but it takes weeks to get through a 10 episode season. I also thought season 2 was less interesting because it did away with the good characters like Churchill and Tommy Lascelles and instead focused on the most insufferable characters like Princess Margaret, Tony and the frickin Duke of Windsor (please get that guy off my screen!!). With that said, I still do like a lot of aspects of this show. I appreciate them showing the inner workings of the Royal Castle and British politics and how hostorical events played out from the perspective of the higher ups. Despite not loving this season, I look forward to season 3.

the spiderwick chronicles - Tony diterizzi and Holly black

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Evelyn) I liked this book because it is full of mysteries . This book is about two identical twins named Simon and Jared Grace and there sister Mallory who move into an old house.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season 7

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) This season definitely did not disappoint. It was marvellous. Jake and Amy are my absolute favourite but everyone else's character development is also phenomenal. So, so good!

Insomnia

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) So this is a early Christopher Nolan movie that he made before he was super famous, but I guess he was famous enough to get 3 of the most famous actors from the 90s. It's a hardboiled detective movie combined with a psychological thriller which are both genres I like a lot, and this one is done better than most. The good guy and bad guy are both pretty complex and have some pretty big moral dilemmas on their hands so it's definitely a movie that's easy to get invested in. I really loved it and can't say I have any complaints. But I also can't say it was unique enough to warrant a perfect score. If you like Nolan and cop movies, watch it.

Never Have I Ever

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by KathleenQ) Just another Netflix teen dramedy. This one was created by Mindy Kaling, and stars an Indian girl who recently lost her dad and suffered from psychosomatic paralysis for three months. But now she's recovered and ready to be cool! Which starts with getting a boyfriend! She's got her eyes on the hottest boy in school! It's mostly a comedy, but occasionally delves into the fact that Devi (the MC) is doing anything she can to avoid processing her recent trauma. It was fine. I had some laughs. The diverse cast was cool. Nothing groundbreaking. These days I just want comfort entertainment, to help me forget about the dumpster fire raging outside for a few hours. This delivered.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine: Season 7

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) I just love them all so much! Really missed Gina, who grew on me like crazy, but still so much fun to be had. Holt remains one of the funniest characters, and I was so excited for Kevin and Doug Judy to have their episodes, and was not disappointed in the least. Lots of laughs, and Jake and Amy are wonderful as always. Found the Halloween Heist episode kind of disappointing, though :/ I usually really like them.

The Skeleton Twins

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) In some ways this was a difficult movie to watch, a story about adult twin siblings both dealing with difficult pasts, disappointment, depression, and suicidal thoughts, but it was also really beautiful and funny and real, and I loved that it wasn't just gratuitous suffering. The characters all made some pretty bad decisions and were obviously not doing well overall, but I was still rooting for them the entire time. And it portrayed sibling relationships REALLY well, better than I see in almost all media (not including Schitt's Creek, of course). Bill Hader and Kristen Wiig are amazing together (I know they worked on SNL together for a long time) and they have the chemistry that this movie needed. Overall, heart-wrenching but moving and with the hopeful ending I needed.

Lab Girl - Hope Jahren

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) It's really not fair for someone to be both an incredible scientist AND an amazing writer. This is Hope Jahren's memoir of growing up loving science and how she came to run her own labs, interspersed with reflections/information about plants, trees, and soil. I didn't always get what she was talking about, but it did make me appreciate the complexity of nature anew. Also these sections always hard really interesting tie-ins with her next chapter about her life. As a thoroughly non-sciencey person, I wasn't sure how interesting I'd find her memoir, but turns out I was VERY interested. I feel like when we were kids we got the impression that "scientist" was a real job that was mostly mixing chemicals and using microscopes, but Hope is an honest to goodness Scientist, aka an academic researcher. To me it sounded super boring - lots of tests, menial tasks, watching and waiting, and always trying to get grants - but I...

Brooklyn nine-nine: Season 7

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This show never fails to make me laugh, and this season was no exception. It is consistently high-quality comedy. A lot revolved around Jake and Amy getting pregnant and Holt becoming captain again (although that arc took less time than expected). The Halloween Heist episode wasn't quite as good as usual, but the Doug Judy episode was fantastic. Also I'd just like to give a shout-out to how much I love Jake and Boyle's friendship.

Rebel of the Sands - Alwyn Hamilton

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This book is a YA dystopian book about a group of ragtag teens trying to start a revolution. I feel I’ve read just about every take on this trope, so it did feel repetitive. The edge this book has, however, is its set in the desert. So a really unique background and characters. Throw in some magic and you’ve got the perfect formula. It felt slow, and then fast, and then wrapped up way too quickly. The main character wasn’t *that* likeable, and the romance was just a no from me. It was enjoyable but I don’t think I’ll continue on with the series.

Close Encounters of the Third Kind

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) A classic sci-fi movie so it had been on my list for a while. Lots of cool mystery and intrigue throughout and they never let up, giving just enough to keep you wanting to find out more. It was also an interesting take on how people might react to alien contact. I was happy it didn't use the invasion/ galactic war trope because I've already seen that movie a hundred times. However there are no characters to cheer for as there is very little character development in the movie. In fact, 80% of movie is just epic scenes with music. It was a pretty unique viewing experience, but I definitely think it could have used more of the human element. Also, I'm sure this movie was crazy popular at the time due to visuals, and the visuals actually hold up amazingly well for a 40 year old movie, but obviously it won't knock your socks off anymore. So as a classic it's a must watch in my opinion, but on its own its nothing spectacular.

The Aviator

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I had no idea what this movie was about and no idea what to expect, but I suppose I knew I wouldn't be let down by a Scorsese/ Leo combo. When I realized a few minutes and one Google search in that this was a biopic, it definitely heightened my interest. This movie, like the life of Howard Hughes, was a total roller coaster throughout. I appreciate that this movie neither demonizes nor glorifies mental health and what it is to live with extreme OCD. It was horrific at times and made me feel queasy just watching, but it was also evident that he could be wildly successful despite it. This was a classic Leo performance and I think much of the uneasiness I felt was due to his acting. Also just a really interesting story that had me rifling through Hughes's wiki page afterwards.

Tangled

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Honestly I have no problem saying this is my favourite “modern” Disney film. If I reflect on that maybe it’s because it reminds me so much of the Disney classics I grew up on? Regardless, the music is SO GOOD, Mandy Moore was born to be a Disney Princess, Flynn is such a lovable romantic interest, there’s TWO cute animal sidekicks and a truly horrible villain—but feel-good all the way through! Some cheesy childish humour that I can appreciate anyways, and I love a good happy ending! YAY!

The Sound of Music

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Easy 10 for me. Julie Andrews is pure perfection as Maria. The music is stunning, the characters are endearing, plus add a little political tension and Nazi-resistance and it’s got a little something for everyone. It’s casted to perfection, from the captain to max to the baroness to every kid in that family. I have no problem saying this movie tops every rendition of the musical I’ve ever seen. It’s just the best and never fails to make me sing (a lot) and make me very very happy.

Sonic the Hedgehog

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) I had super low expectations of this going in so I was able to really enjoy it and it's ridiculousness. It was surprisingly hilarious at times but mostly super ridiculous which is what I expected so it was good. Fun, lighthearted movie for when you need that.

Ori and the Blind Forest

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) I haven't completely finished it (because: Stardew and it ends on an EXTREMELY hard part that I haven't mastered) but I mostly really enjoyed this game. The art is absolutely beautiful and I love the story to go with it. There were quite a few times I had to hand the controller over to Willy so he could do the hard parts for me (even on easy mode - it was depressing) but I realised a lot about what game style I like - not this one which is platform? something?. Despite that though, I really did enjoy this game because it got so much more fun as I went along and gained new skills and could do more. Going back to explore parts I had done already with my new skills was a blast. It truly is a beautiful world!

The Precious One - Marisa de los Santos

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) I had trouble rating this one because on the one hand it was so gripping, and real, and insane, and romantic but on the other hand it was incredibly hard to read at times. There are two parallel story lines and one gets pretty dark at times. Absolutely loved the resolution of everything though and, again, I loved the characters so much I didn't want it to end!

Fangirl - Rainbow Rowell

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) This was such a cute book! The characters were so endearing, their growth was beautiful to watch, and I just generally loved the plot. I'm a sucker for a good romance and this was definitely that. (Huge shout out to Maggie and her extensive library which is absolutely saving me during this time of immense reading need!!! All of my book reviews recently have been courtesy of Maggie and I'm so thankful!!)

Stardew Valley

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) I am so incredibly thankful for this game's existence during this quarantine. :P It has been so fun getting lost in another world. Also it has made me more anxious at times when I had two full days to plan out each day instead of just one but whatever. Worth it.

Holiday in the Wild

⭐ 3.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) I truly have no idea why I had this added to my Netflix list, but once on it, I felt I had to watch it. It was ridiculous, cheesy, and predictable, and the characters had no substance and I didn't even care about the romance. The elephants are the only reason it got 3 stars. They were pretty rad.

Miracles and Other Reasonable Things - Sarah Bessey

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by KathleenQ) So. Ever since my experience having a medically fragile/disabled child, I struggle with most self-help/memoirs because I just cannot handle getting advice from someone who hasn't suffered immense loss or ongoing pain. I just can't take them seriously. That's why I appreciated this book. Sarah suffered a traumatic car accident a few years ago that has left her dealing with chronic pain, possibly for the rest of her life. Her career hasn't gone the way she hoped or planned. She hasn't found the secret to perfect health and happiness. And yet she holds onto her faith. She had to take it apart and put it back together, but it's still there. She acknowledges that she hasn't arrived. Like Maggie, I appreciated her meditations on God as Mother and on accepting the inherent holiness of the body. But honestly, I was more interested in her chapters that were more narrative in nature, so I'm putting that in my back pocket ...

Anne with an E (Season 1 and 2)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Really loved this show. It was just so charming. Gilbert is unrealistically perfect, but I'll take it. Many of the characters were also unrealistically modern-thinking about things like homosexuality and race for this time period, but again, I'll take all the positivity I can get these days. Will definitely watch the third season when it comes to Netflix, and am sad it was cancelled.

Ayokay, We Come Alive EP Side A

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) Trying out new music recommended by my music apps usually results in a string of bad language words (from me). But this album got my attention right away with it's electronic instruments and vocals. It's not amazing, but just really pleasant to listen to.

Robin Hood (1973)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I didn't realize this movie was so old, but the dated animation is really charming. Robin Hood is also the sexiest character ever, as Kathy realized from a young age. There are some really great voices in this one otherwise, like the chicken, the snake, Little John, the Sheriff and that little bunny (LBY type cuteness), but I think the best part of all is the music. Old school folk music sang by a rooster?! Phony King of England is a super underrated song and that scene is maybe my favorite ever among Disney movies. With that said, Prince John is completely unbearable to anyone over the age of 6. The movie loses some points there for sure.

Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) I looooved the Robert Downey Jr Sherlock Holmes when I was like 14, so I'm not sure why I never got around to watching the sequel after I feel asleep the first time. I really, really liked it! It was fun, it was action-packed without being fight scene after fight scene, and I loved picking up on foreshadowing and all the fun Chekhov's Guns. There wasn't a ton of depth to it, but I always enjoy the Holmes/Watson relationship, in every iteration. Overall, just everything I expected it to be. And the casting was amazing! Definitely missed some plot points while looking up actors' filmographies.

Prince of Egypt

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) As a movie I loved it. Took me right back to my childhood. The visuals are stunning and hold up. The songs are great and the animation is awesome. As a message I love this story. Puts the light on the marginalized and shows us that God is near to the lowly and the broken down. As a bible story though, I have so many qualms lol. I hate any explanation that tries to justify killing so many Egyptians even if they were terrible. Hate any explanation trying to explain away that God seemingly killed a whole nation. Anyway, it’s widely believed that the Hebrew people didn’t cross the Red Sea as we know it today but rather the REED Sea - look it up!

Carrie Pilby

⭐ 4.0/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) I hesitate to review something that i didn't like in case it was loved by someone else, but hey, it's only my opinion right? This movie is filled with beautiful and handsome people just saying lines to get information across. It just wasn't believable. Also about 1/3 of the way through it starts to feel more like one of those feel good holiday Hallmark movies... and there is this moment in the film when the main character going through a hard time starts praying to God. I couldn't even listen, had to fast forward... There are some references to literature throughout to help support the main's characters' genius that may help you feel like you're watching a good movie.

After Life season 2

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) Rick Gervais Netflix show. It's a bit sad, but just so good. Reflective. Thoughtful. The music selection was excellent.

Fire & Blood - George R.R. Martin

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) A prequel to A Song of Ice and Fire, this Silmarillion-esque book lays out the history of the Targeryen family. Some really cool stories featuring some standout characters, many of which are memorable despite none of them being main characters in a usual sense. Loved how it made connections between places and events we know about, and added some real depth to the world. The politics and religion in this book is well thought out, as expected, and again just adds a layer of believability to this made up universe. I really like how this book is told as an in-universe history, with the maester writing it referring to his sources, and many of the sources being characters playing roles in the story. Makes it feel like an authentic history book (although now that I think about it, I think I have only ever read fantasy history books...). Getting multiple angles on events and conflicting sides of how events unfolded makes the story more interesting. Extra po...

Silverthorn

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) This is book three from Raymond E Feist's Riftwar Saga. I loved it and want to continue on to the next book in the series. We meet several new characters including one named Micah who's role at the abbey at Sarth is to "defend the faith". Which is to wield a magic war hammer to fight against dark powers. Milamber (Pug) continues to learn more about the Greater and Lesser paths of magic. I noticed alot of overlap with other fantasy writer's themes but whatever, i still loved it.

Momentous Events in the Life of a Cactus - Dusti Bowling

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This is the sequel to a book I read earlier in the year, about a girl born without arms and her other "outcast" friends. I loved this so much, and during the last few chapters even my heartless self started getting teary-eyed because it was all so lovely. In this book Aven has to go to high school, where she hasn't been able to make new friends and a few students are REALLY mean to her, which is a big hit to her self-esteem in all aspects of her life. It included a lot of big feels for Aven, which can get annoying in other books, but to me it all felt really realistic in this case, and not over the top. High school for a girl with no arms sounds like the absolute worst. Also, even though she's in high school now, the tone is still definitely middle grade. So Aven is dealing with a lot of stuff, including a first crush, thinking about finding her bio dad, and the ice cream man doing worse and worse. Aven has a setback, but it...

Finish - Jon Acuff

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) Anyone who knows me knows I’m a “chronic starter”: I love starting stuff but have a very hard time finishing. Either I don’t plan right or it fizzles out or a million other reasons. I even framed my year with the words “focus” and “commit” because I know I don’t finish well. Cue this book. Ive been following Jon Acuff for a while now. After I met him some years ago I signed up for his email and I follow him on socials. He’s funny, smart, and successful. This book was great. It wasn’t like, 10 steps to success! He’s very practical, he’s concise, and he knows what he’s talking about. He included a lot of research in this one and gave a lot of great tips for finishing. But, like any self help book, you will only get out as much as you put in. And although I didn’t do all the exercises, I underlined as I went and picked up some great tools. It was a short, concise read and not overly cheesy and not fake motivational. Guys I’m a finisher!

Pollyanna

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) WHAT AN AMAZING MOVIE!!! I was really hoping this movie would hold up since I was a kid and it did! This is a great movie about a young girl spreading light and gladness to everyone she meets. It will make you laugh, it will make you cry, and it really will bring a smile to your face. It's an older movie so it has quite a bit of Christian values that they mix in there but it just adds to the humour.

Sense and Sensibility

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) I've been wanting to watch this movie for a long time but always forgot about it. It lived up to my expectations, I love Kate Winslet and Emma Thompson and I thought they were amazing in this movie. I liked the romance in this movie and Snape is such a sweetheart!

Okja

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Jess) A good movie that opens your third eye on issues surrounding the meat industry. This movie is just artsy enough, and the relationship between the girl and Okja is adorable. I want one.

Come Tumbling Down - Seanan McGuire

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) Book 5 of the Wayward Children series. Jack and Jill have come back through their door to the school, but Jill has switched their bodies, so Jack asks her friends to help her switch them back, so a group of them travel back to the Moors. Since they were back in the Moors, it was one of the creepier books in the series. It wasn't quite as memorable as some of the earlier ones, but still very enjoyable. I like the characters, and the diversity, and just the inventiveness of this concept and the world(s). I'll definitely keep reading if she keeps writing sequels.

The Half Of It

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I agree with Becky that this movie didn't live up to the trailer, or I suppose that the trailer didn't accurately represent what this movie was really about. But it was still a very charming movie, with extremely likable leads. It was Cyrano de Bergerac, except the Cyrano character was a nerdy, lesbian Chinese-American. I loved seeing a POC actress in a lead role, especially one who is normal-looking and frumpy and never got a makeover moment, thank goodness. The movie has a really nice friendship, and it's cute and funny, and perfect for a relaxing evening.

Stardew Valley

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is the ultimate quarantine game where you can spend countless hours working on a better version of your life. It is entirely wholesome and easy-going and possibly the greatest example of a positive feedback loop that I've encountered. I'm not sure there was ever a moment where I wanted to put the game down and I admit I may have went a bit overboard and wouldn't rest until I was producing 600 cranberries per day... The only reason I took off half a star is because the game is just such a rip-off of the Harvest Moon formula and I do think IP theft is worth mentioning. Still, he did it better than any of those games, and only after that IP has kinda sailed off, so it's hard to be too harsh. Overall, 9.5 stars for introducing me to my true love Penny, who I sectioned off a whole area of my field for so I could grow enough poppies to give her one every day for a year ❤️

The Half Of It

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) I cried all 3 times I saw the trailer for this movie so I was really excited to watch it, but to be honest I liked the movie I thought it would be more than the actual thing. A bit of a spin on an old trope (helping someone get their crush to fall in love with them, and then falling for the crush yourself) which I liked more than usual. The trailer said "not every love story is a romance" and that's my FAVOURITE IDEA and I wish they had actually... really focused on that. But it was still really good! I liked the way it focused on themes of friendship and being seen and subverted expectations, but wished for more of all three. Both leads were super charming, and I did tear up a couple times. Good, sweet, but not everything I wished for.

Sense and Sensibility

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This was our romantic film choice for our anniversary, and it was pretty good. I had my usual gripes that I have with any Victorian era movie, like the fact that it's impossible to empathize with a family that can afford only a small castle, and even worse only 2 servants! But this movie had more interesting male characters than P&P, though I think perhaps the lead character was a little more dull then Elizabeth. But overall I thought this movie was a lot funnier than the other, similar romance movies and that sets it apart by a bit.

After Life season 1

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) Netflix show with Ricky Gervais. I just finished season one and i just really enjoyed the conversations and interactions of all the characters. Alot of humor mixed with serious themes. The main character struggles with finding meaning and being kind to others while trying to live through his daily routines after losing his wife to cancer. I found it difficult to understand their words from the British accents so i watched with captions on.

Community (Season 1)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) An amazing season of TV. I remember really liking this show in University and it holds up well, still one of the funniest shows I have seen. The clever jokes come quickly, and it has many running gags and meta jokes. Love the way they use episodes to explore other genres, like the paintball Western, and all the movie and tv references that inspire each episode, like the Goodfellas chicken episode, the Good Will Hunting plumbing episode, the Dead Poets Society film class episode, the list goes on. The creators of this show clearly love tv and cinema, and use it to inspire creative episodes that pay homage instead of just completely copying things. There is one aspect of the show that doesn't hold up well at all, and that's the out-of-touch old character who constantly makes gay jokes. It is really never funny, and although I think it's supposed to enforce that he is stuck in the past it's super awkward. Aside from this I honestly migh...

Okja

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is an American/Korean hybrid movie directed by Bong Joon-ho (Parasite guy) that touches on a lot of major themes like animal cruelty and corporate greed. Similar to Parasite, it's pretty light and funny for the most part, but has some scenes that are quite dark and serious. Initially I wasn't sure how I felt about that contrast, and felt it didn't have a clear audience, but I came to appreciate how the movie was able to do both effectively. I don't want to give anything away, so I'll just say the final scene was really impactful and one I don't expect I'll forget soon. I am also surprised I am the first one to watch this since I know this movie has elements others value more than me (looking at you, Tim, Maggie and Becky!). This movie is on Netflix so I expect a lot more reviews of it on my feed!

Schitt's Creek (Season 6)

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) Genuinely don't think there was a way this season could have been any better. I sniffled through the entire last two episodes. I love all of the characters SO MUCH, even the ones I never thought would grow on me (Twyla???). And I'm so happy with how they wrapped things up, the way we saw each character's growth and how they reached for their own brand of happiness. I'm so glad some of them did move away, and that some of them stayed. And I loved that perfect note of "your family drives you crazy but you still love them a lot" that they hit, more realistically than I've maybe ever seen it. None of the sentiment felt forced, and none of the grievances felt stilted. Just. AH. Perfect. (DAVID AND PATRICK I LOVE YOU SO MUCH.)
