Hercules (1997)

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) Somehow this is still the best Hercules movie ever made. I hadn’t seen this one in a LONG time and man the soundtrack is fire. Meg is a certified babe and Hercules really becomes a himbo. For some reason I just remember this movie being.. better? It was good, don’t get me wrong. I just had a picture in my mind that was way better.

Seven Samurai

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I always have a hard time rating both older classics and also international movies because they don't have those modern, western qualities that I judge movies by. Even though this movie introduced several significant archetypes that were followed by the west, it's still no exception to the dilemma. This movie is 3.5 hours long, incredibly slow at times, has what I think most would consider pretty strange acting (so much wailing!), has some obviously poor effects - especially during fights - and doesn't necessarily follow modern values. Despite all that, there is still something irresistible about this movie. I think a big part of it is the cinematography, with Kurosawa being a pioneer of the industry in ways that still haven't been matched. Despite being black and white, this movie has more life than anything I've seen recently. The characters add a lot, and as the name suggests, you get attached to a whole host of Samurai tha...

Boyz in the Hood

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This was another iconic movie I had never seen. I feel like this movie probably changed a lot of perspective when it came out in the 90’s but it’s still so relevant. From the first scene of the little kids cussing each other out I loved this movie. Laurence Fishburne is an incredible father, and he definitely gets the MVP. It had a star studded cast including Ice Cube, Cuba Gooding Jr., and Regina King. A really interesting movie all around with well rounded characters that you kind of feel attached to right away because you see them grow up. This movie has a TON of swearing and a little bit of nudity for your discretion. Regardless of that, I highly recommend this one!

The Holiday

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This is the perfect Christmas movie and no one will convince me otherwise. This is Jack Black’s apex mountain. He’s witty, charming and loveable—hilarious without being over the top. I think I’ll argue the same (career peak) for Jude Law (what a Daddy dreamboat) and Cameron Diaz. Kate Winslet is just the most perfect heroine, and somehow has such incredible character development in just one quarter of a movie! Brilliant! This film has it all. Heart-warming love stories, perfectly hateable villains, ADORABLE Physiotherapy training montages, and the best child actors I’ve ever seen. Movie MVP: Arthur Abbott (obviously) I always kick off the Christmas movie watching season with this one, because it just doesn’t get better than this. I think I could happily watch it five times a holiday season. The movie rental music scene is iconic. Had to mention this before signing off.

The Muppet Christmas Carol

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Just cheesy, lovely, wholesome and enjoyable Christmas fun! Michael Caine is a perfect Scrooge, and the whole film just made me smile 🥰

Ori and the Will of the Wisps

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) The sequel to Ori and the Blind Forest, this one takes all the things that make he first one great and makes them better. The platforming is the real standout here, with very fluid and satisfying movement. The puzzles are incredible here too, really taking the skills you learn and putting them to the test. The game looks amazing as well, with an improved world and more distinct and memorable regions. The music sounds beautiful again, and the world in general is just more filled out, with some other characters to interact with and side quests. My main complaint is the combat. There are many more options than the first one, but the creatures you fight are all pretty repetitive, and it felt a bit hack and slash. Never could get a good grasp on how to dodge certain attacks, and the damage they did was never enough to really cause any problems anyways. The best bosses are actually the platforming ones, where you are running away from them in high octane ...

Juliet Takes a Breath

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) This was introduced to me when Brene Brown interviewed Gabby Rivera on the Unlocking Us podcast. Gabby was approached by Marvel comics to write America Chavez. Maybe it's weird that i even read this, but i just found the writing super good. Interesting and educational for me learning about lesbian stuff. Really couldn't put it down. Many loving interesting people in the story. Perfect book. Not my favorite genre, but perfect. Warning: there are lesbian-maky-out scenes and sex in the book.

SteamWorld Heist

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is a game in the SteamWorld Universe, but totally different than the Dig games. It's a turn-based strategy game, kinda like Worms from back in the day (but way better). I loved this game. I love that these developers make the games they clearly want to make and don't just follow their winning formula (they also made a deck building game?!). It feels like they had fun making the game. Along with being smart, technical and tight, it's also funny and endearing. I had no idea if I'd like a game like this, and I kinda only bought it because it was on sale and I wanted to try something new. But this is now my kind of game. I was super into it by the end, passing on anything else in favor of this game. I was tempted to give it a 10, but I just couldn't give it the same score as Red Dead (and I'm not sure how I feel about it being the same as The Last of US II...). But this game is just terrific. If you see it on sale in the ...

Educated - Tara Westover

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) The amount of injuries and accidents this family goes through is amazing, and painful to even read about. Such a good story, couldn't put it down. (Read Magdalene's review for summary of the book)

Dancing with Elephants by Jarem Sawatsky

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Benjamin) This was given to me to read so i just did it. I appreciated the authors willingness to listen to other cultures and their connection to God. He did an interview with Patch Adams which was great. The subtitle is 'mindfulness training for those living with dementia, chronic illness or an aging brain'. So i'm not exactly sure why i was given this book to read, but i still appreciated it. The author himself has Huntingtons disease so i learned about that too.

Oathbringer (The Stormlight Archive #3)

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Will) The Stormlight Archive is the absolute best high fantasy series happening right now, and book three doesn't disappoint. I just re-read/skimmed this one because book four has just been released! If you're worried about starting a series that's not complete, Sanderson has plans to have some sort of ending with book five, so it won't be long now. And then he has another five book series planned after that, in the same universe! I won't try to do a full review because it's long, but one of my favorite things about Sanderson's stuff is how he takes all the best traditional parts of the high fantasy that's come before him, and then manages to improve on so many aspects to make it all feel fresh again. It's got magic systems, a rich in-universe history, different races & types of intelligent beings and all that good stuff, but it also has: Moral ambiguity! You rarely get a group of perfectly good people fighting aga...

The Crown (Season 4)

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) Tim’s review says it all. I agree on all counts. It’s my favourite season yet. Casted to perfection, emotional, brutal, impactful, with moments of charm and humour and just so wonderful to watch. A perfect show 💕

The Crown (Season 4)

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) I gave last season a 9, and I can't think of anything I didn't like the season, so what the heck, a perfect season. I love this show. The return on investment that you have this deep into the show's run is just so satisfying, having watched all these people for so long and really understanding what makes them tick. Something like Anne talking about Diana having accept the marriage, then a quick camera flash to Margaret, who says nothing, instantly brings back everything she went through in Season 1. The struggles of Charles and Diana callback in so many ways what his parents went through, and I have come to learn that I really am a sucker for parallels drawn across generations. Speaking of Diana, she really brings fresh life into this season. The actress is very magnetic and looks so completely like her. Along with Thatcher and Elizabeth, they really form a nice trinity, with their storylines constantly mirrored and contrasted. I c...

New Girl (Season 4)

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) This season stepped things up quite a bit. The jokes are a bit smarter, and I feel like the characters have really settled in to who they are at this point. Winston is still very weird, but in a way that is almost more consistent, like it is his bit and he thinks he is being funny instead of just coming off as stupid. The same can be said of the other characters too, where I think of them less as complete idiots now. The laughs were a bit more frequent here, but there were still just so many forgettable episodes. Hard to say, but I get the impression that the funniest scenes are the ones where the guys are ad-libbing, which leads me to believe that the writing is just bad, and not the actors. MVP once again goes to Coach, and his departure will for sure hurt the ratings for the next seasons.

The Extraordinaries - TJ Klune

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This book is a little hard for me to talk about, because I loved it so much that I could write a 100-page paper on it. So I'm trying to be brief. The main character is Nick, a queer teen boy with ADHD who is obsessed with and writes fanfiction about his favourite real-life superhero, Shadow Star. In this version of the world, superheroes do exist, except they're called Extraordinaries. There doesn't seem to be too many of them, and they don't know how people become Extraordinary. To Nick's delight, he meets Shadow Star one day, and decides that the way for them to end up together is for him to become Extraordinary as well, so he comes up with harebrained schemes to do so. But also he's still grieving his mom! And his relationship with his dad is complicated! And his best friend Seth is mysteriously disappearing a lot! And he needs to keep his grades up! This book is filled with over-the-top characters, particularly Nic...

Blackkklansman

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) I’ve been wanting to watch this for a while now because I really like Spike Lee and the main actor. This movie was wild! Even more so considering this is based on a true story. It’s hard to believe that a time like that existed. The whole time I was watching I felt like I could look at it in the past, but then they include some footage from 2017, and could’ve included incidents from this year and it’s very evident that it isn’t an issue of the past. Having read MLK’s bio also added some flesh to the movie because I recognized a lot of the names and the movements that were happening. I truly feel like I don’t understand the black experience but this movie helped me to gain at least some deeper insight. People will forever have to live with the fact that they voted for the same president as David Duke and that is possibly the most shameful thing I can think of.

Kids of Appetite - David Arnold

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) I started reading this book with no idea where it was headed since I didn't read the back! It's an incredibly heart-felt tale of a teenaged boy whose father has died and his mother is seemingly moving on which sets him on a course to meet the most beloved group of misfits. And the plot thickens from there. Some pretty intense and crazy things happen and my mind was blown. The author worked really hard to write a few heavy things well (living with Moebius syndrome, and living through the Congo civil war). I was so incredibly invested and moved. Not at all a light-hearted read but I absolutely loved it.

The Social Network

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I'd been wanting to watch this movie since I listened to the same pod that Tim did saying this was the best movie of the 2010s. I can't say I agree, but I do think it was awesome. The fact that I was super invested in a movie where you are kinda rooting against the main character is pretty impressive. The three main characters all felt really fleshed out and realized, and I thought Armie Hammers characters were really funny. Most of the humor otherwise didn't really land for me, especially in the first half where it mostly felt like I was watching Gilmore Girls. I think this is partly due to not being a fan of Eisenberg, though I do think he did a good job portraying a really strange dude. I thought there were some clever moments to be sure, and I thought the idea of Zuckerberg admiring Sean Parker, who the audience is made to hate, was pretty brilliantly done. I also was pretty impressed how prescient the whole thing was as I don...

The Marvellous Mrs. Maisel (Season 1 and 2)

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Enjoyed watching this series for the most part. A spunky, lovable female lead who leaves her comfortable, typical life and becomes a comedienne. I didn't find the stand up comedy that hilarious all the time, but actually found the banter between her and her manager Susie to be the most entertaining. I also loved her dad. Looking forward to the third season if I have access to Prime at that time.

Menno Moto - Cameron Dueck

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) I really enjoyed this book about Mennonites! The author did a great job telling a lot of stories through a really interesting journey he took through the Americas. It was an absolutely heartbreaking story at times and affected me deeply but I thoroughly enjoyed it overall. I learned a few historical tidbits and learned a lot about colonies I was previously unfamiliar with.

The Queen’s Gambit - Season 1

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) OH Man so good. I actually took awhile to get into it because it was just so dark at the beginning and I kept waiting for *all the horrible things* to happen. But the ending! I can't stop smiling when I think about it! So heartwarming and WONDERFUL! Anyway, the main actor was absolutely incredible, her wardrobe was 😍😍👌 and just again, the ENDING.

3:10 to Yuma

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) My second Christian Bale movie in 3 days! I thought this movie was incredible. I've been in love with Westerns since playing Red Dead, and this may very well be my favorite. It's more of a slow character drama for the most part, though it definitely goes hard with its shooting scenes. This movie is totally carried by outstanding performances by Bale and Russell Crowe who play these awesome, complex, conflicting and compelling characters. Bale tears your heart out while Crowe plays this great charismatic leader similar to my beloved Dutch Van Der Linde. I loved almost everything about this movie, but I kinda felt let down by the ending. The movie draws up this really difficult moral dilemma, but by the end I felt the characters were making decisions that didn't really add up for me or weren't entirely consistent with their arc. Still, the first 3/4 of this movie were about as darn near to perfect as movies get for me.

Menno Moto - Cameron Dueck

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Will) Fascinating (to me) read on one Mennonite's trip from Manitoba to the Southern tip of Argentina, with him stopping at many Mennonite colonies of all kinds along the way. My parents were born in a Mexican colony (and I visited there once when I was twelve or so), and I've been to Belize where Anita's parents spent a good portion of their lives on a colony, so I have some personal connection to some of the places the author went. It was just really interesting to see the author experience those colonies for the first time and to follow as he tried to understand their way of life and why they choose to live that way. He mostly tries to be pretty unbiased, but he is an outsider so it's pretty easy to be critical from that viewpoint. One of the author's main questions is to wonder why Mennonites are always running, and whether the continual process of moving to start all over with a new colony ever did lead to what they hoped for in ...

The Queen’s Gambit - Season 1

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Will) I loved pretty much everything about this show. It's about chess! But you don't have to like chess to enjoy it, because it's just as much about a young girl coming of age, dealing with her own character flaws, all in a super high pressure environment An incredibly rewarding ending. The final scene was 👌 It was beautifully shot - especially that last episode! One thing I didn't love is some scenes, especially early on, almost felt a bit creepy, like they belonged in a horror movie? And I was always waiting for a jump scare or something, but this is not that kind of show! Felt like it managed to mostly avoid cliche, which was likely very difficult to achieve It's over! I'm glad they don't have to make up random new conflict to try adding more seasons that inevitably aren't as good

The Vanishing Half - Brit Bennett

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Such an interesting book. Light-skinned black twins leave their small town and one builds a life as a black person and the other passes as white. So interesting to read what that means for their lives. The author explores such important topics like race, gender, and identity and highlights the complexity of all of them. Highly recommend.

Stand By Me (1986)

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Mathew) This film is a classic 1980s preteen friends adventure find yourself story, starring Corey Feldman from that other 1980s preteen friends adventure find yourself story, as well as Wil Wheaton, River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell, and a young and tough Kiefer Sutherland. Corey Feldman's performance was A1, truly nailed his role. But all 4 of the main cast did. I feel like I don't have much to say about it but it moved me multiple times, made me yearn for the good old days I wasn't even alive to see. It was engaging and enjoyable, but I don't think I'd watch it again. Maybe with someone who hasn't seen it yet.

The Queen’s Gambit - Season 1

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Jess Dyck) This show was just so good! Tim can attest to this, but I just haven’t been excited to watch any TV show in a while, and I just had SO much fun watching this one! It’s charming, yet gritty and I appreciated how it defied my expectations a few times. Anna Taylor Joy is SO striking and I was obsessed with the wardrobe and styling on the show. The sets were amazing and it really was aesthetically pleasing to watch. Start to finish I was drawn in and I’ve been recommending it to everyone!

Missing Link

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) A cute movie about an adventurer helping a sasquatch to unite with his cousins, the yeti. Surprisingly funny with beautiful animation, particularly the backgrounds and landscapes. Great voice cast and Mr Link was wonderful. The storyline was fairly predictable overall but we all enjoyed watching the movie.

Ford vs Ferrari

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I'd totally forgotten about this movie until Susanne reviewed it. It's got two of my favorite guys, how could I forget?! In fact, I think Bale and Damon save this movie from being pretty lame. It's essentially a sports movie, and it unfortunately has so many of those lame sports cliches (the montage scene, photo finishes, spinning everything to be inspirational, etc.). However, because it was a true story, the movie also avoided some other cliches that I thought for sure were going to come up. I loved how this movie looked though, and you certainly feel the intensity of the fast cars. Even after 2.5 hours of essentially nonstop racing, you never stop feeling invested. The mvp certainly goes to Bale here, and I thought his character was pretty unique and dynamic.

The Queen’s Gambit - Season 1

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) When I first saw the trailer for this movie I thought it looked really cheesy. But literally every podcast I listen to was raving about it, so I had to check it out, and I am glad I did. It follows an orphan who learns chess from the janitor at her orphanage and is clearly a prodigy, and you watch as she grows, moves up the ranks, and struggles with addiction. You meet some fun characters along the way, and it is impossible not to root for her. This show also looks amazing as a period piece, and I am again impressed at how amazing a smaller Netflix production like this can look. Another huge pro to this show is the runtime. 7 episode mini-series, and you are in and out. It has great pace, and with absolutely zero filler you are on-board the whole time. It also feels unique to be following one character this entire time, but she is such a fascinating character that she has your attention the whole time. A real star-making performance for Anya ...

The Dragon Prince - Seasons 1-3

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This was such a cute show! The art was cool and the characters kicked ass. It was a fun watch, but I didn’t have to get overly invested in it. I think I was kinda expecting another ATLA? But it wasn’t that, felt more shallow and aimed at younger kids. Anyway, fun watch and the elves were my favourite part

Joker

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Damn, this was dark and violent. I think it's going to give me nightmares. It did an amazing job showing how and why Joker became Joker, and really makes you think about the history of truma and dysfunction that typically leads to terrible decisions. A plothole I see is that Joker is already like 50y old while Bruce Wayne is a kid, so he would be ancient by the time Bruce becomes Batman.

Ford vs Ferrari

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Surprisingly interesting especially considering it was about racing and cars (bore). I watched it just because John was and ended up getting fairly invested. You just can't help rooting for Ken Miles.

Clueless

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This movie is as old as I am but it was so funny! I was laughing throughout the whole movie. Me and my friends did a Netflix watch party which made it even better. This movie has a pretty big influence on pop culture too. To this day I hear some of the lines I didn’t realize came from this movie, and I’m impressed with the far reaching implications it holds. Recently on tiktok a scene from the movie has resurfaced which made it relevant and I’m so shocked. I did NOT ship the romance. It felt wrong and weird and just blech. I did love the character development though! Cher is a cool character even if she was kinda racist.

Death Stranding

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I played this game some 90 hours so naturally I have a LOT to say here. But basically the TL;DR version is I love so much about this game from an atmospheric and aesthetic standpoint, but the uneven, anime story combined with some frustrating game mechanics keep this from being a masterpiece. This is a sci-fi post apocalyptic game that features not only the voice acting of some pretty famous actors, but is a rare case of including their likeness as well. You play as Norman Reedus, who was great in this game, and includes great performances by Tommy Earl Jenkins and Troy Baker, and a truly breathtaking performance by Mads Mikkelsen. This game has a super empty world devoid of life as humanity is going through a mass extinction, so you truly feel alone in this game. The whole gameplay loop is delivering packages from bunker to bunker, contending with thugs, undead monsters, but most difficult of all, an uncharted terrain. I had no problem with the ...

La La Land

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This was a rewatch, and certainly won't be the last time I watch this movie. This movie has a ton of significance for me. It was a big time romantic movie Jess and I watched when we first started dating, and it has that LA connection. This movie played a large part in choosing LA for our honeymoon and I'll never forget playing this soundtrack as we drove around at night. But the movie is really good too! It's my favorite romantic movie ever, and maybe also my favorite musical. Every time I watch I recommit myself to listening to more jazz, though it's never actually happened. I love every song here, and I love every scene. I really feel this movie is near flawless. I adore both Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, and I think the choice to have two leads not be incredible singers was the right one as I find them relatable and endearing. Despite how quick this movie runs along, I feel like they hit all the right beats in the relationship ...

The Queen’s Gambit - Season 1

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This show is about a young orphan girl who becomes a chess prodigy. She has a troubled past that slowly gets revealed as the season progresses. I thought the actor was stunning, got major Emma Stone vibes. The supporting characters were also really interesting and contributed to the story nicely - even got a cameo from Dudley Dursley! I will say though, this show said little about the struggle of a girl living in a mans chess world. Almost nothing was said about any sort of discrimination she faced, and when it did it was glossed over. Maybe she wouldn’t have faced any? But it was the 60’s and the world wasn’t great then. Anyway, really intriguing show about a topic I previously had no interest in. Had me rooting for her the entire time. Highly recommend!

The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue - V.E. Schwab

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This was one of the most-anticipated SFF releases of the year, so I was all over this, and it was pretty epic. The main character is Addie LaRue, born in 1600s France in a small village. Her parents are pushing her to get married, so she makes a deal with the Darkness that she will be totally free in exchange for her soul when she decides she's done living. Of course, the Darkness is a wily bastard and twists her words, making her so free that anybody who sees her forgets her as soon as she leaves their sight. Also she's immortal, and is unable to say her name or tell her story. She refuses to give in and let the Devil win, so she lives for more than 300 years, drifting, until to her surprise she meets someone who doesn't forget her. This audiobook was about 17 hours long, and I can't say how I would've felt reading a physical copy. At the beginning it may feel a little directionless, but once I knew that for a while I...

A People's History of Christianity - Diana Butler Bass

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) In this book, the author goes through the history of Christianity era by era and looking at how the religion changed, mostly through the two areas of devotion and ethics. It's a "people's history", so although she talks about some major figures that we're familiar with, she focuses on how their beliefs and actions affected the daily lives of people. The focus is on the faith and religion of the common people - how they prayed, what they believed, etc. She also discussed some people that we don't usually hear about to show how the ideas of the day affected them or the influence they had on others. I found it really interesting and informative. It's well-researched without being stuffy. The author seems to be a liberal Christian, and I appreciated getting her viewpoint, and just this overview of how much Christianity has changed since Jesus.

Peanut Butter Falcon

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) A heartwarming movie about a young man with Down Syndrome running away from a residential center to pursue his dream of becoming a wrestler. He meets up with an outlaw and they travel together as their friendship develops. It was really beautiful and sweet overall, even if the storyline was rather unbelievable and the ending felt a bit ubrupt.

Emma (2020)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) I had no idea they remade this movie but am always up for a movie based on a Jane Austen book. I actually didn't love the actress choice for Emma, and was hoping for a slightly more handsome Mr Knightly 😬. But I enjoyed the story as always, loved the scenery, fawned over the dancing, and the costumes were wonderful. The attire and hair seemed more accurate than in the recent Pride and Prejudice movie. I didn't always love the music choices for the movie, though. Definitely envied the amount of leisure time and reading parties they had.

Vignettes - Wesley Schultz

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This is a solo album from the lead singer of the Lumineers where he covers what he considers the songs that most influenced him from before he became an artist. Covers include songs from guys like Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen and even Coldplay. I love some songs here, like some others, but also skip a few. It's weird, because I consider this guy to maybe be my favorite musical artist, and so it's cool to see his influences, but also weird to notice that my tastes don't always align. Also, it includes only his second best cover of Bob Dylan's "Spanish Boots..." BUT I do recommend listening to "Keep Me in Your Heart" and "My City of Ruin."

SteamWorld Dig 2

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I really liked the first game, and this game basically improves on it in every way. There were a few minor things I missed from the first game, but those are mostly aesthetic choices like the Western theme. In this game, you play as Rusty's friend who is looking for him, and uncover a secret plot along the way. That is cool in itself as the first game had virtually no story. But we don't play SteamWorld for the story! This game is a lot of fun, and again pretty addicting. It retains that very simple style of dig, find upgrades, and dig some more. But now we have a lot more cool puzzles, a couple nice boss fights, and some really fun movement mechanics. It has a lot of collectibles that I wasn't SUPER interested in, but they make them a lot more clear and easier to know if you've found them all. This one is also nice and easy and relaxing, so I think it's nice for someone who wants to explore something outside of farm s...

The Forgotten Garden - Kate Morton

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Anita) Wow. I have never read a book with more twists and turns! I thought I had the whole thing figured out like 5 times and was wrong each time! It was crazy! It was definitely just a really good, and interesting mystery that wasn't too dark and definitely thought-provoking. I echo Jess's thought about how frustrating it was that she completely withdrew when she realized she was adopted. That was heartbreaking to read. This book had everything. Fairy tales, heartbreak, romance, insanity, you name it.

Kim's Convenience (Season 4)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) Same thing here. Couldn't get into it. Ugh. Overall, I thought this season was a bit all over the place with relationships and I don't know if there is supposed to be another season or not but I didn't love the way it ended. There wasn't much closure. There were definitely some sweet moments and some laughs, though not as many as I remember from other seasons.

Schitt's Creek (Season 6)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Anita) So I'm mad about this one because with the huge time gap between watching the other seasons and this one, I just couldn't get as into it as I would have liked! I forgot how much I adored the characters and just kind of remained too detached. I barely even cried during the *big event*!!! So I guess I'll just have to binge all the seasons together sometime to get the right effect. Anyway, objectively, it was absolutely wonderful. Lots of character growth and beautiful relationships except what the heck Alexis and Ted?!

Once Upon a Time in Hollywood

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) I...did not enjoy this movie. One of those super weird, artsy movies with lots of big time actors and almost no story line. I was frequently confused and there was a super brutal, gory scene near the end.

Axiom's End - Lindsay Ellis

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by KathleenQ) I read this because I love Lindsay as a Youtuber and I love sci-fi. It was fine. The alien was cool. The protagonist/narrator was kind of boring, though, and I couldn't bring myself to care about her all that much. I thought the story really dragged for most of the book, though it got really intense and interesting in the last eighth of the story. Good for Lindsay for completing the herculean task of writing and publishing a novel, but it wasn't anything outstanding. Her real talent lies in her critical analysis of media and her entertaining video essays.

A Beautifully Foolish Endeavor - Hank Green

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by KathleenQ) My review is basically identical to Magdalene's. Just go read hers, it's great and I'm tired. I went into the first book (An Absolutely Remarkable Thing) already a fan of vlogger Hank Green, and I loved it. So I had high expectations going into the sequel, and, well, Hank outdid himself. It was gripping, well-paced, insightful, thought-provoking, and hella fun. Go read it! Aliens! Greedy corporate overlords! Teamwork! Ass-kicking! Musings on the value of human life! Cyborgs! Good vs evil!

A Knight's Tale

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by KathleenQ) I remember thinking this movie was silly but fun as a teenager, so I grabbed it when I saw it at a thrift store for a few dollars. Guys, it is SO DUMB. Oh my goodness I hardly know where to start. The costumes, the lazy writing, the fact that I still don't understand who the love interest is (a princess? a noblewoman? Who is her family? Where is she from? Does she have a last name??). I know they were being cheekily anachronistic with the music and some of the costume choices, but I just couldn't swallow most of it. All that being said, it was still kind of fun to see jousting and an underdog champion.

Dark (Season 2)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) The first season ended on a huge cliffhanger, and this season did not disappoint in picking up where things left off. If the first season was complicated, this season takes it to an entirely different level. We are seeing time travel in different timelines now, and while it it is easier to follow since I am more familiar with the characters, there are enough mind bending twists to keep you on your toes. I think this show is genius. So well thought out and mapped, this season you can really feel the knot pulling into place. One episode stood out as the emotional centerpiece, but the rest were all compelling. It's impossible to explain this show, but it's about time travel and the apocalypse. You get the classics, people trying to change the past to change the present or the future, but it is pretty nuanced. I just love the way they make everything fit together, and even when things get super confusing I trust that they have it all figured out...

Interstellar

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) Like any Christopher Nolan movie, I was lost throughout watching this movie even though it’s like my third time watching. I think this movie is incredible even though the science and the time travel stuff didn’t make sense. The musical score was so jarring, and even though I knew exactly what was happening it still had me at the edge of my seat the entire time. I experienced a lot of emotions watching this, especially when he leaves his kids, when they mess up on the planet and so much time has passed, and when he comes back to see his old daughter. Some powerful stuff in here.

What Remains of Edith Finch

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This game mostly consists of a narrative, where you play the role of Edith Finch herself as she navigates the story. It's very story-based, and it's about Edith going back to the home where she grew up to explore and find out how all the other members of her family died, going back several generations. It's not so much a game as it is a way to experience a story. I thought the idea was very cool, and the story was a little creepy and quite compelling. The visuals were cool, the voice cast was great, and I liked that for each mini story your task was different, almost like a mini game. There's not really any challenge involved, though, as the game tells you pretty clearly what you need to do next, so you just follow the story. I also didn't find the ending completely satisfactory, since I wanted to learn more about her family and felt like not everything was explained. But it was a great experience.

Deadpool

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) As far as super hero movies go this one isn’t good. A bad villain, mixed with a bad origin story do not create a good movie. It was funny at times, but so vulgar and brutal mostly. I think Ryan Reynolds can be funny, but he plays the same role in every movie he stars in. I don’t know how these movies were so big, but I guess I get the appeal of an R-rated super hero movie and him breaking the fourth wall.

Nacho Libre

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Just as amazing as it was 14 years ago. It's da beeest.

Superstore (season 1)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I'd heard of this show just a few times, especially when people were discussing under-the-radar shows. It's a comedy, and that's what I was in the mood for, so I finally checked it. And I was very pleasantly surprised! It's a workplace sitcom, set in a big box superstore. The setup is familiar, of course (think The Office or Brooklyn Nine-Nine), with its super weird characters and ridiculous situations. But it's even more familiar, because we've all been in those stores, and we all probably know someone who works in one. It doesn't do anything very new, but I found it very funny, and I appreciate the jabs it takes at consumerist America. I love these tiny cut scenes it includes of normal people doing ridiculous things in the store, like taking naps on the couches. This was only the first season, with 10 episodes or so, and although I did think it was funny right away, I expect it will still improve as it settles int...

The Once and Future Witches - Alix E. Harrow

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This was a perfect book to read during the days leading up to Halloween, because it's all about WITCHES. It's set in 1893, and it has elements of alternative history, because in this book Salem was destroyed after the witch trials, and they've created a new community called New Salem. The story revolves around three estranged sisters - the youngest is running away from home after committing a crime, the middle sister is a newly pregnant factory girl, and the oldest is an unmarried librarian. They all find themselves in New Salem together suddenly when a mysterious tower appears in the town square, and they suspect they are destined to call back the lost ways of Avalon and end the banishment of witchcraft. But of course the men do NOT want the women to gain back their lost powers, and so the women must gather forces and bring witching back to Salem. The book is pretty long, but also intense and SO COOL. It's about the struggle o...

The Good Place (Season 4)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by The Original Susanne) Absolutely loved the first season and continued to enjoy the other three even if they weren't as funny or surprising. The episodes in this season often felt a bit disjointed and I kept feeling like we must have missed an episode or something, but they pulled it all together in the end and it was unbelievably touching and beautiful.

Borat Subsequent Moviefilm

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) I watched this with a few friends on Halloween which definitely made the experience better. This movie is OFF. But in kinda a good way? He’s really just trying to expose the world and America in specific. I can’t recommend this cause it was so filthy, I laughed a decent amount but was mainly just in shock.
