Citizen Kane

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) All all-time classic from 1941 that my scratch off poster made me watch. I guess this movie brought a lot to the world of cinema, things like montage cuts, lots of different camerawork, and even the ambiguous ending. It really is crazy what they were able to accomplish over 80 years ago. I always feel like how old and influential a movie is gets baked into a review and what I think of it. Yet with that said, I still think I really enjoyed this movie on its own. It tells the story of this mega rich tycoon who dies and leaves behind a complicated legacy. I think they do an awesome job of balancing his story, making his development and downfall make sense, and having the audience dislike yet understand him by the end. In a lot of ways this movie felt pretty modern with a lot to say to a modern audience about wealth, power, relationships and growing up with a lot of pressure. This movie was great and it's not hard to see why it's considered t...

Against the Ice

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) All I care about is polar exploration now. Jk but I was excited to watch this movie about the 1909 expedition to explore northern Greenland. Just two guys trying to survive alone on the ice! Really makes you appreciate spring. This wasn't a spectacular or particularly memorable story, but when something is a true story you can't really complain about it not being flashy enough. And I'm a sucker for survival stories, especially true ones. I too would lose my mind if I had to live in a little hut in Northern Greenland for 2 years!

Plus One

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) A standard, and I mean STANDARD romcom. Not very funny, and the romantic development was so painfully predictable. After 15 minutes you truly know EVERY single story beat that will happen. Why did this movie have to be made? It did kinda remind me how much I kinda miss weddings and how in a few years they will start becoming very scarce for me. Some really nice shooting locations too.

Malcolm in the Middle (season 3)

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) We are flying through this show because it's all we ever want to watch. Another season, another perfect 20 episodes. I like how some of the characters have developed a bit and how they can now go away from Lois vs Children as the basis for every episode. The finale, "Monkey," is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. We were dying.

mainstream sellout - Machine Gun Kelly

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) His previous album which was his first pop punk album was incredible and one of my most listened to albums from 2020. He tries to mimic that here and just doesn’t land as well. The music isn’t bad, but there are a few cringe songs and lyrics that make me like it less. I just never find myself coming back to this album, even after a decent amount of listens. I think he’s somewhat self aware? But that also makes him a bit insufferable if I’m being honest. He wants to be woke and know what the people say about him but it isn’t done well. His collabs with Lil Wayne were a pleasant surprise, and his best songs are with other collaborators. Ay! Make Up Sex, and Maybe are my favourite tracks.

The Fifth Season - N.K. Jemisin

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) What an incredible work of art. This story is unreal. It’s complex and compelling and intricate and I truly got lost within the world every time I read. This is one of the most creative books I’ve ever read (Read Hoodie Logi’s review for a synopsis). The fantasy is incredible and she mixes in important issues like race and environmental issues. The story lines were all great and I was never sad to be reading a specific character. The climax was unreal but they left quite a few questions unanswered with still a lot of intrigue. I can’t wait to continue on in this series!

Pokemon Crystal

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This one pains me because this was my first ever video game and I beat it probably fifty times. Until a week ago, I would have said this is in my top ten favorite games ever. I really wanted to love this game again. Man, did this game makes some weird decisions after gen 1. Everything is SO SLOW in this game. Leveling is slow, walking is slow, battle animations take forever, you never learn any good moves so battles are a grind. This game was not a joy to play like the first one. That one was janky as ever, but at least it was charming, fast paced and gave you a real sense of progression. In gen 1, by the end, it's a constant battle of titans. In this game, I was battling the Elite Four with a Magneton level 36 with its only move being thundershock. Now, with that said, this game goes all out on fun end-game stuff, capping off with an epic battle against Red! However, the end game stuff is not as cool as I remembered with zero challenge until...

The Last Wish - Andrzej Sapkowski

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I've consumed quite a bit of Witcher content despite not being crazy about much of it. Truly the only thing I've really liked was the Witcher 3 video game. Turns out I should have went directly to the source a long time ago! I read one with audiobook a while back but regret it because you miss so much and it's really not the same. Guys, these books are great. In a lot of ways, these books are your typical high fantasy fare: a sword fighter lives in medieval Europe, but there is magic and monsters along with a story about fate and destiny. Yet somehow he takes all these tropes and makes them feel fresh. This book especially is quite unique in that it's a collection of short stories that the author wrote for a journal. As a result, each story is a smart, compact little take on old fairy tales that are all full of intrigue, cleverness, and often some good old fashion ethical dilemma with a moral takeaway. It's been really nice to...

Bridgerton (season 2)

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I never actually watched season 1 because the story itself and all the sexy times didn't sound like something I'd be into, but I heard that this season was tamer. And then I got Covid and wanted to watch something that could absorb me for hours on end, so I watched a recap of season 1 on YouTube and away I went! Boy, I do love Regency-era costumes and pining! I still don't think the story is very strong, but it sure is compelling - I watched 6 episodes in one day. I kind of like the large cast and family aspect, and some of the themes were pretty well done. And visually it was amazing, obviously. If the next season is similar to this one in terms of spice content, I will probably watch it. I want more Penelope and Eloise!

Karamo - Karamo Brown

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I love the Queer Eye boys, and this was the only memoir written by one of them I hadn't read yet. It's quite short and is written more like a collection of essays, looking at his life from different angles. There's a chapter about colorism, religion, abuse, and of course how he came to host Queer Eye. The story I was most interested in was how he found out he had a 10-year-old kid when he was 25, and eventually got full custody of him and his son's half brother. It's a wild story. Karamo has had a tumultuous life, and it was super interesting to see how he got through all of that to become the kind, empathetic, capable social worker we see on the screen. Although I didn't agree with all of the views he expressed in the book, I have a greater respect for him. It's a really interesting memoir abour the life of a gay Black man, whether you watch Queer Eye or not. It is, however, still only my third-favourite Queer Eye ...

Everything Everywhere All At Once

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) I went into this not really knowing what to expect, and was really blown away. There were definitely times when I thought it was TOO weird and could have dialed it back a little and kept the same effect, but I did laugh A LOT and also found the ending really moving. The acting was incredible and although there were parts I felt like I didn't quite understand (maybe due to missing stuff--GET SUBTITLES IN MOVIE THEATERS) I really loved the concept. Incredible, really unique stuff. And SO funny.

Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) About halfway through this movie my sister leans over and tells me they replaced Grindelwald with a new actor; so just a little indication of how closely I was following these movies. That being said, Mads probably made the character about a million times better. I’m not a Johnny Depp hater but I never ever liked him in this role. Mads is intimidating and foreboding and the kind of person that makes you wanna commit crimes! I had such low expectations for this one that I actually liked it quite a bit. Eddie Redmayne is really likeable. He’s quirky and awkward but also charming. Jude Law actually makes a great young Dumbledore and the new characters introduced were great! But if you stuck a gun to my head and asked me to tell you their names tell my mama I love her. One thing they get right in these movies are the beasts. A lot of really cool, unique creatures. Also, a few good magic battles but I really wish they would utilize special effects more...

West Side Story (2021)

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) West Side Story is a movie where they found the twenty sexiest men on earth, put them in a movie, then found the ugliest man on earth and put him as the main character. I've never liked Ansel Elgort and haven't been able to put my finger on why, but now he's been cancelled so I guess I win this round by default. Honestly, the romance kinda dulled this movie for me. I don't care about love at first sight, because that's the kind of magic musicals are all about. But it's what happens later in the movie that made me really scoff at a romance I never really dug. It's at the heart of the movie, and so it's kinda big deal, and I really thought the slow songs between them were boring because I was not invested. BUT! Besides that, I thought this movie was awesome. Lots of classic Spielberg tricks with the wide shots and extended oners. It's impressive that this is his first musical, but really I feel like the guy was m...

The Last Duel

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Ah yes, Tim beat me to the punch here, and really it's too bad because I don't really have many unique thoughts on it besides. In fact, I'm quite sure all the good parts of his review were plagiarized from our conversation about it. I too really loved this movie for a number of reasons. It looks great, the cast is fantastic (though very unexpected for a medieval France setting), and it has lots of my favorite kind of violence (swords, blood splatter, etc.). I really loved a lot of the costume/makeup/haircut choices, and I loved the French names, though am I the only one who thinks it's weird that they had Americans doing French characters but using British accents? Why is British the standard accent for everything old!? If you're not doing French accents, just be American! Anyways, the real highlight of this movie is the unique way of telling it from three different perspectives. I thought that it would be an interesting thing...

The Last Duel

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) Getting my review up because Joe just watched and I want to make sure my opinions are here first. What an awesome movie! I was blown away that more people haven't been talking about this. Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Adam Driver, Jodie Comer, by Ridley Scott!? How could this movie ever be bad. The plot is set up around two rivals, and when one rapes the other's wife the titular last duel is set up. I was kind of bored in the first 30 minutes, not super in to the period or the plot, but then all of a sudden the second act starts, and its the same thing I watched from a different perspective! I thought this plot device was amazing. We see the rivalry and assault from 3 perspectives, each one with subtle differences in main memories, dynamics, even camera angles to emphasize how things can be misinterpreted. I thought it was genius, and made you feel crummy for all people involved, especially during the wife's perspective. Comer gets a cha...

Everything Everywhere All At Once

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) Usually I don't particularly like artsy movies, but I really enjoyed this one and had a great time watching it. It's super weird, and I just accepted that I wouldn't really know what was going on, and it was fine! I thought the whole cast was amazing (plus I have a special fondness for Ke Huy Quan after seeing him at FanExpo), and it was both funny and emotional.

Palm Springs

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) While watching this, I remembered we watched Groundhog Day at the start of the pandemic when life felt like Groundhog Day, and now we watched this movie while at home sick with covid, which again feels like the same day every day. Weird! Anyways, this is a time loop movie with Andy Sandberg, and it really should have just been called Groundhog Day 2 because they are so similar as romantic comedies with some really dark humor. This one has a couple unique twists, but again it's more sequel twists rather than original IP twists. With that said, I really loved this movie and thought it was hilarious. It's definitely a little raunchier at times which I don't love, but I love that these movies make you think pretty philosophically while also running off jokes that are completely wild and wouldn't work in any other kind of movie. Totally recommend, just know that there are a few viewer discretion moments.

Pokemon Yellow

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) A few days back a few friends and I decided to Nuzlocke the pokemon games, which, for those unfamiliar, is playing through the games with some specific rules to make them much more difficult and punishing (pokemon gone forever when they faint, can only catch one per area, etc). Man, I had so much fun doing this. This is not your ordinary playthrough. I played on an emulator on my phone, and played it on 2x speed. I know I hated on Mario 64, and this game obviously does not hold up either. BUT this was totally different for me because I'm SUPER nostalgic for these games. I probably beat this game 30 times as a kid, and to this day knew every secret, every puzzle, and honestly knew which trainer had which mons. That's not to say I didn't have difficulty, because I almost gave up on a few occasions, and it took me 2 tries to beat it. But knowing so much about the game, and being a competitive pokemon player for a decade made this a super...

The Town

⭐ 6.0/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) This had been on my Netflix list for a while and it had good ratings so I finally watched it but I was pretty disappointed. It's a pretty typical One Last Job movie about bank robbers but it wasn't even a very good one. I didn't even like any of the main characters or feel like I was rooting for them. Just don't do crimes 🤷‍♀️

There Will Be Blood

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) A rewatch after Prisoners, since it felt like I needed to see unhinged Paul Dano again. This movie feels like it was made with the intention of being the best movie of all time, and many would say it comes pretty close. It is a masterclass in atmosphere, from the setting to the score to the performances. Something evil is bubbling under the surface, much like the slick blood of the earth that the main character is harvesting for massive personal gain, and at any cost. A key part of this is the score, and when the movie starts you would be convinced its going to be a horror movie. And maybe it is, in some way, but the tension created from the music feels disconnected to what you are watching but also perfect. Daniel Day Lewis is the real winner from this movie, turning in an iconic performance as this unhinged oil man. We learn so much about who he is in the first 10 minutes with zero dialog, and we are never truly shocked by anything he does, ...

Komi Can't Communicate (season 1)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) A really sweet and funny slice of life anime about a very beautiful girl with intense social anxiety. I laughed a lot at this one and was rooting for her (and Tadano) so hard. I loved the portrayal of social anxiety, which was generally pretty accurate and sometimes relatable. I loved most of the characters (though I was rolling my eyes at times at weirdly sexual humour) and it was genuinely very funny. Reminded me of my #1 anime, Tanaka-kun is Always Listless. And that can only be a good thing.

Atlanta - Season Two

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) This season takes the weirdness to the next level, and is an unexpected delight every episode. Its hard to explain what makes this show so special, and I have watched a couple video essays on what Donald Glover is doing here and I think its pretty special. I came across the term afro-surrealism and it is spot on, describes exactly what this show is doing. This season has the subtitle "Robbin' Season", and it captures a feeling of desperation in society that leads to people doing wild stuff. Also, this show came out in 2018, and feels super relevant despite the chasm of experiences we have had since then. It features a couple more bottle episodes, and they are all my favourites, from Teddy Perkins to Fubu. A lesser show would be completely consumed in the rat race of trying to become a successful rapper, but this is no ordinary show and it goes whatever direction it wants. Season three has started and I can't wait to dive in.

Pilgrimage

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) A movie night pick, I think mostly because Tom Holland is in it. But I really enjoyed it! It follows a group of 13th c Irish monks charged with delivering their holy relic to Rome to aid in the crusades, and I loved the exploration of faith and redemption. It was a bit of a downer, and pretty violent at times, but great performances all around. And great cast! Did monks ever do anything bad? I think I'm a fan. Also bless whoever let Tom Holland not have a horrific haircut.

Sea of Tranquility - Emily St. John Mandel

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This is Emily St. John Mandel's newest book, which is getting extra hype because Station Eleven was made into a TV show recently and did really well. This book had somewhat similar vibes and themes, and ESJM's trademark style. This novel is hard to describe, because it starts with a few short stories that don't seem to be connected until you get to the middle. We have a young English man right before WWI trying to start a new life in Canada, then a woman trying to find her childhood friend in 2020, then a writer from a moon colony doing a book tour... There's space, and time travel, and pandemics (with nods to Station Eleven), and in all of these timelines people are lonely or searching for meaning, and have had strange, inexplicable experiences. It's definitely an interesting book, and at only 250 pages, it's a surprisingly quick read despite how literary it is. Probably because I had such high expectations going on, I...

Malcolm in the Middle (season 2)

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Episode after episode I am just so pleased at how much this show makes me laugh. I truly wasn't expecting to actually love this show, but I can deny it no longer. Towards the end there is like a 6 episode run of absolutely perfect episodes and what I think to be genius level comedy. I might be overhyping it for some, but for whatever reason this show really connects with me. Lois is still the MVP and everything still kinda revolves around her character, but this season is where Hal starts to shine, developing as a character and showing glimpses of his Emmy-winning acting ability (seriously crazy that he was in this show). Both "Hal Quits" and "Bowling" are all time classics which I remembered through the years. "Malcolm vs Reese" and "Mini-Bike" are also hilarious, perfectly-written episodes but honestly I'm just saying that because they were close to the end and I remember them better. This sea...

Star Wars Rebels (Season 2)

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) Better than the first season, this is still just a kids show with some cool episodes that tie back to the main series. This season ended with some impactful moments, and I like that the stakes are higher. Still, there is an episode for every member of the crew so that you get to learn more about them and their minor problems. I enjoy it, and I love hearing Star Wars music every time I watch, but I don't think I will ever have a serious love for a kids show. I do like that gaps are being filled in, and as I was Mandalorian or the other recent shows I feel like I understand the lore better. It is filled with all the cheesy moments kids shows have, and I find myself drifting during every action sequence. Just show me lightsabers all the time please.

Annihilation

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) Another movie I have had on the list forever, because I love everything else Alex Garland has done but this one looked too freaky. And boy is it freaky! Natalie Portman is a scientist investigating The Shimmer, and weird alien zone that is growing and no one comes out of it alive. Her husband is played by Oscar Isaac in this one, so you know its gonna be good. Not much to say about this one, since it feels kind of unexplainable, but the science of the phenomenon goes in one ear and out the other, while the experiences she has are unsettling and alien. The mystery of it all is at the core of the movie, until the last 20 minutes when that is all thrown out and it becomes purely sensory. I have no idea what happened, but it reminded me of 2001 A Space Odyssey, where humankind crosses some unknown barrier into some other existence and the story is doing its best to portray that on screen. It is bizarre, and freaky, and unforgettable. I don't lo...

Prisoners

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) This one has been on my list for a while since I love Denis Villeneuve's, but was worried this one would be too scary. Well, the moment was right and I felt ready for some domestic torture. This movie is bleak. Its always raining outside, and its about children being kidnapped. The father resorts to violence and takes matters in to his own hands, while an edgy detective is trying to track down the actual culprit and keep an eye on the crazy dad. I thought it was an effective thriller, and the bursts of violence were shocking and hard to stomach. I will say the scariest scene involved cases full of snakes, not sure why this needed to be done but I could barely sleep. Despite the content, this movie is great. It is gripping and fast paced (despite the long runtime), and I was excited to see where it ended up. I did think the ending was a slight let down, with a kind of Inception-esque cliffhanger that I didn't think was effective, but it...

Dawnshard - Brandon Sanderson

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) This is a novella that takes places between Stormlight Archive 3 and 4, following Rysn, a plucky side character from the main series as she explores this world and expands the universe. I did appreciate that aspect, as I think the physical world of that series is the best part, and we get a look into some new races and places, while still leaving a ton of mystery. Stormlight has bothered me more recently with its exhaustive character introspection. All the characters are constantly monologuing about their feelings and insecurities, instead of just showing us with their actions how they feel (which I think is why these books are also insanely long). Well the shorter page count meant less of that (but still some), which was a nice change. I like Rysn and her arc, and enjoy seeing her do things and not just think about how sad she is. I also think Sanderson has a pretty adolescent sense of humour, and all of his humourous characters are not funny t...

Sonic 2

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) Movie #2 lolllll. Ya I mean what to say. I laughed a few times, cringed more than I thought I would, and walked out not totally regretting the $15 AVX ticket. Knuckles was bad ass and I really liked Tails. He was cute and innocent and a likeable character. In the end it was about teamwork and friendship and family which I can always get behind.

Everything Everywhere All At Once

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) Movie #1 of this weekends double feature. Before this movie came out I had heard nothing but good things and the trailer was wild so I was pumped to watch it. This was incredibly creative, original, ridiculous, funny, strange and weirdly moving. It starts out as a normal Chinese family that have to get their taxes done and turns into a multiverse action thriller. They do a great job of making this movie really, really intense and then throw an incredible curve ball of ridiculousness that will make you remember it’s a movie. Legit some incredible action scenes in this. And I kinda jived with the way they explained the multiverse! This movie is also about generational trauma, the internet, and parental relationships and how there is a huge disconnect there because the rift is so wide because of modernity and technology. The whole cast was amazing and my eyes may have welled up a time or two. At the end of the day it really is hard to explain exactly...

The Goblin Emperor - Katherine Addison

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) It's hard to rate this book because I loved the latter half, but the first half was quite slow and often confusing. Maggie read it to me over 2 and a half weeks, and the first week or so I was just interested enough to continue, and then by the end I was really invested. It's a very political story about a half-goblin who suddenly becomes the emperor of the elves after the sudden and mysterious death of his father and half-brothers, and the way he struggles to be a good emperor when he never wanted to be. Not super gripping, and definitely not my usual thing, but you just want him to do well so badly! And make friends! And get a good night's sleep! All of the names and fantasy words were super confusing, and I had to stop and get clarification and consult our character list pretty often. But for the most part it was manageable, and we read the final quarter of the book all in basically one sitting. I really loved the ending, and I go...

Baby Mama

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This was a Jess choice. It's about Tiny Fey hiring Amy Poehler to carry her child as a surrogate, and the relationships that form around that. Pretty good! Both are pretty funny and they have good chemistry. There are also some great moments from Steve Martin and Sigourney Weaver (funnily enough appearing the day after watching Aliens), and overall this movie is just good fun. Can't say I was ever dying laughing, but hey this wasn't my choice to watch so I'm not going to get picky. Definitely a pretty lame, unnecessary romance that went along with a lame ending, but again this movie is just nice fun and I'm sure the ending is sure to please most.

Komi Can't Communicate (season 1)

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) This anime is based on the only manga I've read every (available) volume of, and so I was curious to have my first ever manga-to-anime experience! It's a slice-of-life story about a high school girl named Komi who has extreme social anxiety, but a classmate promises to help her reach her goal of making 100 friends. This show follows the manga closely, and every episode is pretty much pure ridiculousness. There's little plot, just Komi and Tadano and co. hanging out, but every episode had me laughing, and it was perfect for when I wanted to turn my brain off.

Aliens

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) The little s in the title means this is actually the sequel to Alien which I watched last year. In this one, as with every sequel of this type, the protagonist has to go back to the Danger and *suprise* it is just as perilous as the first time. I was definitely a little disappointed with this one. I felt it had The Force Awakens syndrome where a different director wanted to pay homage to a classic film, and so they just tell the exact same story with updated effects. This movie truly has the exact same story beats, same twists, same outcomes. I really liked they movie, and it's been long enough for me where I still enjoyed watching it again. But there was nothing new this time around. Still, I love that they create this expansive universe and boil the story down to just a few interesting characters. This is a thrilling experience, never showing you too much of the bad guys to make the experience feel cheap. A nice throwback, and definitely wo...

The Hangover

⭐ 6.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I made Jess watch Tommy Boy and in turn she made me watch this. I'm all for dumb comedy, but this was more a raunchy comedy and I just didn't find it that funny. Probably wasn't in the right mood. Zach Galifianakis was the highlight, and Ed Helms had his moments. Bradley Cooper isn't really that funny, but at least he looked good here. Also, the guy from National Treasure?! What range, going from high-brow Oscar material to this.

Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Will) I was looking for something in the Marioverse that I could play with my kids, and this delivered. Each level is a mini 3d puzzle with all the usual baddies, and you have to navigate with Toad/Toadette who can't jump. This was fun! Cooperative mode was good, and even a four year old was able to meaningfully contribute as long they played with someone a bit more advanced. It's a pretty easy game to complete, but there's extra difficulty in finding and collecting all the optional stuff along the way, and I found myself replaying some levels to do so. The only real issues are that the game is a bit short for $60, and sometimes you just can't get a remotely useful camera angle when you're playing two player, but that's rare enough.

Death on the Nile

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) I always love an Agatha Christie murder mystery so I was stoked that this was on Disney+. I knew this movie just got so-so reviews so I wasn't expecting greatness, but I really enjoyed it! I won't give anything away, but I found the twists genuinely surprising, and I was really invested in the mystery. I didn't care very much about the Poirot lore and on the whole I think it'll be a forgettable film, but it was a fun watch.

The Road - Cormac McCarthy

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by hoodie_logi) Sad. Sweet. More sad. Devastating sad. This is a brilliant book, but very sad. If you haven't heard of it, the book follows a man and his son as they travel along The Road going south in a post-apocalyptic North America. There's no real hope or goal to their journey, other than survival. They run into a few people, some good guys and some really, really bad people, but the heart of the story is the relationship between the man and his son. It's a deep dive into what matters in life, choosing to keep going in the face of abject hopelessness. It was really good, but really, really sad. I would encourage you to read it, but only if you're in a good head space.

Maurice

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) This 1987 film is an adaptation of one of the first queer novels to have a happy ending, and I'd been meaning to watch it for ages, and I'm glad I finally did. It's easy to forget how queer people had to live just a hundred years ago, and the effect that that culture had on queer people. This story centers around a young man in Edwardian England and his relationships throughout his life, and it was kind of slow and meandering but it had some really poignant scenes and tender moments. Plus Hugh Grant is there, and he grows a disgusting little mustache! I really never expected to see so many full-frontal naked men in nonsexual contexts though. Could have gone without seeing that. In the end, it was just really nice to see a historical queer story that ended with a happily ever after, which was so rare until really recently.

Shackleton

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Rebecca) As much as I loved the Endurance book, I did feel like I was missing out on a visual aspect of the story, so watching this two-episode 2002 miniseries starring Kenneth Branagh really rounded out the experience. It did spend WAY too long on the stuff leading up to the expedition (just get on the boat!) but it covered the events of the expedition itself really well, and added that sense of humanity to the story. It was a bit hard to keep track of who was who, especially with so many of them being named Frank, but I really enjoyed it regardless. I know they stayed really faithful to some of the real photos and short videos saved from the actual expedition, so it was nice to see it kind of come to life.

Tommy Boy

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I remember watching this one and thinking it wasn't my favorite Chris Farley movie, but I thought I'd watch it again as surely my sense of humour has matured and been refined since then to catch all the nuances of this brilliant performance. Obviously this is a me problem, not a Chris Farley problem... Unfortunately I didn't laugh as much as I'd hoped this time around either. Still some all-time gags, like the brake pad demonstration, the "fat guy in a little coat" scene and of course Chris Farley changing in an airplane bathroom. David Spade is super not funny here unfortunately. But I get it, it's hard to be second fiddle to such a force of nature.

For those unaware, this is a dark, and I mean DARK fantasy role playing game that especially made headlines this time around cuz G.R.R Martin contributed to the writing. You play in this depraved world where the gods recently had a war that essentially destroyed everything, and now its up to you to kill the gods and restore order. It's made by one of the premier video game makers of our time, FromSoft a studio that is essentially known for inventing...
