This one has been on my list for a while since I love Denis Villeneuve's, but was worried this one would be too scary. Well, the moment was right and I felt ready for some domestic torture.
This movie is bleak. Its always raining outside, and its about children being kidnapped. The father resorts to violence and takes matters in to his own hands, while an edgy detective is trying to track down the actual culprit and keep an eye on the crazy dad. I thought it was an effective thriller, and the bursts of violence were shocking and hard to stomach. I will say the scariest scene involved cases full of snakes, not sure why this needed to be done but I could barely sleep.
Despite the content, this movie is great. It is gripping and fast paced (despite the long runtime), and I was excited to see where it ended up. I did think the ending was a slight let down, with a kind of Inception-esque cliffhanger that I didn't think was effective, but it was more about the ride with this one.
Paul Dano is amazing as this creepy suspect, and I decided 30 minutes in I had to rewatch There Will Be Blood. This movie is star-studded, with Terrence Howard and Viola Davis playing very minor roles. I really enjoyed this, and learned that the world is a dark and dangerous place that corrupts everyone. MVP goes out to Jake Gyllenhaal, looking damaged yet super cool.
