All all-time classic from 1941 that my scratch off poster made me watch. I guess this movie brought a lot to the world of cinema, things like montage cuts, lots of different camerawork, and even the ambiguous ending. It really is crazy what they were able to accomplish over 80 years ago.
I always feel like how old and influential a movie is gets baked into a review and what I think of it. Yet with that said, I still think I really enjoyed this movie on its own. It tells the story of this mega rich tycoon who dies and leaves behind a complicated legacy. I think they do an awesome job of balancing his story, making his development and downfall make sense, and having the audience dislike yet understand him by the end. In a lot of ways this movie felt pretty modern with a lot to say to a modern audience about wealth, power, relationships and growing up with a lot of pressure.
This movie was great and it's not hard to see why it's considered to be an all-timer. It reminded me a lot of other classics like the Godfather (Welles felt so similar to Brando, maybe cuz I only know two actors from the olden days), or even Succession. Good stuff, worth watching for film buffs and noobs alike.
