This 1987 film is an adaptation of one of the first queer novels to have a happy ending, and I'd been meaning to watch it for ages, and I'm glad I finally did. It's easy to forget how queer people had to live just a hundred years ago, and the effect that that culture had on queer people. This story centers around a young man in Edwardian England and his relationships throughout his life, and it was kind of slow and meandering but it had some really poignant scenes and tender moments. Plus Hugh Grant is there, and he grows a disgusting little mustache! I really never expected to see so many full-frontal naked men in nonsexual contexts though. Could have gone without seeing that. In the end, it was just really nice to see a historical queer story that ended with a happily ever after, which was so rare until really recently.
