Gosford Park

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This movie is an episode of Downton Abbey disguised as a murder mystery. Rich aristocrats come from all around for a weekend party at a Dumbledore's house, but then there is a murder and lots of suspects... Except it isn't really that. Like I said, it's an episode of Downton, mostly concerned with the doings of both the aristocrats and the servants. There are lots of little misdirections, lots of clues, some hints at motivation. But in the end, this is a very subdued murder mystery, and nobody really cares about the murder. It's interesting to compare to Knives Out, which has a similar setup in some ways, but that one is so much more snappy and dramatic. This is much more concerned with the characters than it is the murder, and the investigator is just a minor character. I'm not really a murder-mystery expert, so this actually might be more of a commentary on the genre. There is an American filmmaker present, and he is much mo...

Coraline

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) It was a double feature spooky weekend! This one was MUCH scarier than bodies bodies bodies. I love stop motion animation, but when used like this can be so unsettling - and that was the result here. Coraline was an awesome character and it was easy to route for her. But so was Wybie and the cat! And even other Father had his moments! Such a solid, creative film I’m glad I watched due to WeView!

Bodies Bodies Bodies

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is an A24 movie that is equal parts spooky and comedy. I wouldn’t say for a second that it’s scary, but it has some good spooky elements and atmosphere. The premise is these rich young adults have a party and one by one they start dying and trying to figure out who the killer is. But throughout the whole movie they are just so ridiculous with their concerns and it ends up being kind of realistic? Like a lot of the dialogue perfectly nails that millennial/Gen Z speak and I was laughing the whole way through while being on the edge of my seat. It’s super campy, has some pretty big names, and it’s nice and short. I highly recommend this one before spooky season ends.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) I think it’s safe to say that this is THE musical event of the year. I don’t know if her filming this and releasing it independently to theatres during her break from tour makes her a marketing genius or entertaining genius but damn she’s a great capitalist. This was incredible, iconic, show stopping and culture defining. I loved every second of it and got goosebumps many times. I am fully biased and a totally swifty but I don’t think that takes away from the prowess and impressiveness of this show. Every era is distinct and fun and worthy of screaming along to. Even her pandemic albums, which are more folky and slower, were so much fun to watch on stage. I watched this movie with a friend who doesn’t know Taylor that well so I tried to see her with new eyes and I think I became an even bigger fan. We are so lucky to live at the same time as Taylor.

Killers of the Flower Moon

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) This movie starts off with a very relatable character named Leonardo DiCaprio saying "I do love that money," and later admits he loves money because he's lazy. Immediately I was on this guy's side, and would forgive anything he would do to get that money afterwards. I thought this movie was amazing, and I was actually pretty skeptical beforehand because Tim told me it had some Oppenheimer vibes. It's true. There is a lot of talking in rooms, and the latter half is about a court case. Unlike Oppenheimer, this movie is actually well written, has the built in advantage of not intentionally confusing the audience, and the court case is actually about the main conflict of the movie. Flower Moon is 3.5 hours long, but I never felt like it was dragging or boring. I thought Leo was incredible as this slimey, sniveling, disgusting piece of human garbage, but I thought Lilly Gladstone was the star as his opposite. Quiet, composed and ...

Coraline

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I've been hearing rumours that this movie is not a Tim Burton movie, but these lies are not to be believed. This is the most Tim Burton that a movie can be. I really loved this. It's super weird, super creative, and pretty creepy! Even the opening animation that plays during the credits is creepy. I think this is a kids movie, but I think I would have had nightmares watching as a kid. There are also some scenes that I would think are a little mature for kids (looking at you, giant boob lady). But Coraline was a terrific character, and surrounded by some great ones as well. Loved the dad who has the same posture as me, and loved the Russian Circus guy (oompa, oompa!). The animation was amazing, the music was amazing. This was just a really great spooky season watch. Still, it gets a little tooooo weird at times. Like, I had no idea what was going on for some sequences near the end. Definitely some drugs must have been done by the creators ...

Just. One. Mile

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is a running documentary about a race called the Midwest Mile. It’s a 1.1 mile loop, 350 feet elevation gain and loss, and you have 20 minutes to complete it, and the last man standing wins. I don’t know if anyone is gonna watch this but there are a bunch of spoilers ahead. There were about 100 people that ran it and the final winner ran 111 loops, 123 miles in 38 hours. He climbed the equivalent of Mount Everest and back plus an additional 10,000 feet. So pretty incredible stuff that is hard to wrap your head around. I have such conflicting thoughts about stuff like this, and it really reminded me of free solo. Like, there is no need to be doing this kind of stuff. It’s so bad for your body and mind and at the end of the day it’s just a dick measuring contest. The main guy is truly a douche bag and I wanted him to lose so badly. He was so cocky and full of himself, he kept saying no one could beat him, he couldn’t die, stuff like that. Humil...

Killers of the Flower Moon

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) A movie like this makes me question why I rate movies at all. This is a story I loved, directed by a master, starring some of the best actors in movies today. Its easy to have quibbles, which I might get into a bit more, but when a great chef makes you a meal what is there to complain about? I was very excited for this movie, and I thought it was great. The main negative talking point with this movie is the length. Yeah, its very long, and not the most dynamic movie in the world. But I don't really care. As cheesy as it is to say, I think this is an important story, one that everyone involved seems genuinely passionate about. Its a story about disgusting people doing unimaginable things, and the importance of it in the telling of history is what really gripped me in the book. I thought Leo and De Niro were exceptional, and Lily Gladstone was overpowering them at times. I don't want to get too deep into the story, but at some point she has a ...

Four Thousand Weeks - Oliver Burkeman

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) 4,000 weeks equals to about 76 years, which is roughly the life span of the average person depending where you live. This book explores how we use those 4,000 weeks. I wouldn’t call this a time management book, at least not in that sense. The author explores many different approaches to time but urges the reader to release themselves from the shackles of productivity. He argues that no matter how convenient our life gets (phones, cars, washing machines, robot vacuums) our lives are busier than ever. There is no such thing as getting it all done, and the sooner we accept that fate, the sooner we can live better. He talks about confronting our finitude, and to take inventory that we are not invincible and death is inevitable, but that isn’t a bad thing, because that means we can sooner live more meaningful lives than if we were to live forever. He gets quite philosophical at times and quotes a lot of the greats. He talks about slipping into this sta...

Coco

⭐ 10.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) Extremely underrated Disney movie in my opinion. This movie explores the Latin holiday the day of the dead and focuses on one boy’s adventure to finding out his family’s legacy and what that means for him. There are a lot of great aspects to this movie. It’s fantastical, funny, very endearing and tugs on the heart strings a lot. I absolutely love this idea they explore in this movie of how you don’t truly pass away until your memory is forgotten by your loved ones. It’s inevitable eventually, as the movie explores. But no one wants to be forgotten! And that’s why it’s important to leave a good, lasting legacy. I would argue that this idea of the afterlife is more fleshed out and a bit more biblical than the evangelical view of the afterlife, but maybe gets a bad rap because it focuses on dead people instead of the promised resurrection. I think of people that have passed away in my life, and love the idea that they aren’t really gone because thei...

Sex Education

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Mathew) This show definitely isn't for everyone because it is very sex positive and has quite a few nude scenes and other shocking content, but I want to believe that it has something for everyone just because of how inclusive it is. You'll be hard pressed to find a type of relationship that isn't represented within the community surrounding Moordale; and the show's ability to explore those relationships in realistic, relatable, and touching ways made me feel like a better person after watching it (keeping in mind it's a comedy!). There is a slight decline in quality starting in S3 that continues into S4 but only in the way that highlights how great the show starts off. Seasons 1&2 are easy 10/10s before a couple of points of decline follow. Also featuring the best casting for father and son. Had to Google it and still didn't believe they aren't actually related. You'll know it when you see it.

Reservation Dogs (Season 1)

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is an odd show about 4 indigenous teens that live on a reservation in Oklahoma but are trying to leave for California. On the surface it feels like what makes this show good is that it’s off beat and weird. And while those elements contribute, I think the main factor is how immersive this show feels. Every dynamic feels genuine, and every experience feels authentic. This show is really funny and almost wholesome apart from the swears and the fighting. But it’s also really deep and deals with grief and loss in a seemingly natural way without shoehorning a lot of that in to manipulate the watcher. I’m really excited for the next season.

Normal People

⭐ 9.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) This is a show about two people, Paul Mescal and Daisy Edgar Jones, that documents their relationship from last year of high school to last year of university. This show really is something and it’s not hard to see why this put especially Paul on the map. The overarching thread that makes this show so good is the undeniable chemistry between the leads. I don’t even know if I think they’re good for each other but I want them together so bad. I want them to experience stability and happiness and joy within each other. This show is heavy, vulnerable, emotional, exhausting. I think it has a lot to say and I wish I was more perceptive but I really loved it. I think it touches on class and the different responses to life based on how they were raised. Another big theme of this show is sex, and so I feel like I can’t properly recommend it to most people. If you’re in the mood for something jarring yet amazing, check this out.

Game of Thrones (Season 8)

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) *spoilers* This is perhaps the most dunked-on season of tv in the modern era. After this masterwork of a fantasy TV show that had this special ability to just let us exist in a fully fleshed-out world for all that time, it ends on this pretty bizarre note. The reasons behind this trainwreck of a season have been well-documented, and I don't really need to get into all of them here, but my one hot take is that this season is miles better than 7. In fact, I might even say that besides the last episode... This season is not bad! I think a big reason I didn't actually hate this season is because after 7, my standards were lower. To be clear, there are two different shows in this series. Season 1-6 might vary in quality, but it is the same show. The writing, acting, direction and set pieces are all similar, and they are mostly great. 7-8 is just something totally different. I don't know exactly what happened between 6 and 7, but something ...

Dirty Dancing

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) A solid movie, better than I thought it would be. Even I was a bit taken aback by the first time the young people "dancing" is shown, since that first scene is basically a clothes-on orgy. This movie is a horny upper-class teen fantasy. You have to go to your parents stuffy forest resort and end up in a situation where you have to learn to do sexy dances with a good looking guy who really knows how to move his pelvis. Been there girl! I was actually pretty shocked that a bunch of this movie hinges on a brutal abortion scene, so that was something else. Aside from that there is no denying the leads have chemistry. I can't even imagine a modern take on this movie, both because of the ridiculous setup and a lack of a Swayze in our young actor crop, and because of that it feels like this beautifully crafted 80s gem. Its got some classic romcom beats, which is another way of saying I was on my phone a bit through this one, but overall more ...

Silicon Valley (Season 2)

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) Not as strong as the first season but still very funny. This show is absolutely relentless in beating down our favourite start-up, and it can be a bit frustrating when every victory comes with bad news as well. But I like how stupid this makes working at something like Google look, and the way it makes fun of the "visionaries" that lead these companies. I really like the finale of this season, where David takes on Goliath but David is a group of coders. Not much more to say since my season one review, but I think this is an amazing show that captures a time and a place perfectly.

Psycho (1960)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I might say that this is the spooky season classic. This is an old Hitchcock movie (I think my first experience with Hitchcock?) and everything here will be familiar for anyone who has ever seen a movie, or ever been on the internet (especially if you listen to Bastille). And yet, this movie relies on lots of twists and turns, and they all surprised me! I really didn't expect this movie to go in the directions that it did, and the final reveal was a total, delightful shock. I really loved this movie. With classics, it's sometimes hard to know if you love the history, the charm, or the movie itself. I unquestionably loved this movie as a movie. It was exciting, mysterious, spooky, and just overall a lot of fun to watch. No wasted moments, and I was hooked from the first scene. I also thought that Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) was outstanding. One of the great performances I have seen. I only found out after that people think he is the sex...

Elemental

⭐ 7.5/10 (Originally written by Beans) So I had heard a bunch of really bad things about this one so never gave it a chance. But then my friend who is basically a girl version of me loved and so I decided to check it out. And ya know, not bad! The story basically tells the immigrant story of today. Fire leaves their home to start a new life in Elemental City after hardships in Fireland. But Elemental City doesn’t really accommodate for fire so they have to find a place on the poorer outskirts of town and make a home and shop for themselves there. The dad is the shop owner who can’t wait for his daughter to take over, but what if that isn’t what she wants.. when their part of town starts getting destroyed due to lack of maintenance from the city, everything threatens to boil over. I liked this just fine. It was creative and colourful and cute. Nothing revolutionary, and not a must watch in my opinion, but a good enough 100 minutes.

The Lighthouse

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Unlike Silence of the Lambs, this is not the type of spooky movie I expected to like. I've watched all of Eggers movies now, and I think he's just not really for me. He's one of these super artsy guys that critics adore, but his movies don't make any money because audiences never like them. They are super weird, very dark, unsettling, cryptic. I think his movies are incredibly impressive in a lot of ways, but despite watching a lot of movies, I'm just not the type of high brow movie-watcher that enjoys these cerebral, sensory experiences. As for the positives, there's a lot I can say. I think Willem Defoe's performance as this old, gruff sailor was incredible, especially his committment to the accent and his line delivery. In all of Egger's movies, the dialogue seems super authentic and transports you to the period. While I thought Pattinson was also great, I conversely thought the guy just couldn't stick to on...

Silence of the Lambs

⭐ 7.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Oh we just keep getting spookier this October! This is a movie in which a serial killer is at large, and so Jodie Foster is tasked with talking to another incarcerated serial killer (Anthony Hopkins) to try and get clues. I'd say this is one of the most celebrated, most universally beloved horror movies out there. It's dark, it's intense, it's grimy... but I never really connected with it. I'm really not sure why I didn't love it, and it's one of those instances where I wish I liked it more. I liked it, to be sure, but I never felt much, and was kinda bored here and there. Anthony Hopkins gives one of the great villain performances of all time, reminding me of Heath Ledger's Joker, for instance, where he is the star compared to the vanilla hero. Jodie Foster was great, for the record, but her character kinda pales in comparison to Hopkins, though probably intentionally so. Also she is so bad at the basics of her jo...

Wolfwalkers

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I'm kinda shocked this movie isn't being talked about more. Oh wait, I'm not, and that's because it's an Apple exclusive. Free Wolfwalkers!! I thought this movie was terrific. It's an Irish animated kids movie about an English girl who moves to Ireland because her dad (Sean Bean) was asked to clear the forest of wolves. So all the accents are Irish, except for the girl and Sean Bean who are Yorkshire. Already this movie is 8/10 minimum. But everything else is amazing. The animation is very unique, very pretty, very understated. It's closer to Ghibli than Disney. The music was beautiful. There is one scene in this movie where the violin is going, and a character has a choice to make, and you are sure your heart is about to be ripped out like in old Disney movies. While I'm thankful they didn't go that route because I wasn't emotionally prepared, this movie would have easily been a 10 for me. But yeah just o...

The Menu

⭐ 8.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) I think this is a great spooky-season pick that is basically a slightly darker version of Glass Onion. A movie that makes fun of rich people, made by rich people, featuring rich people, that is happy to relate to poor people and take our money. I thought this movie was hilarious, especially to start, with Nicholas Hoult being the star. Everything he said killed me. I also loved the food critic and the way she talked about food. I have mixed feelings about fine dining as art, but the way she talked about it made me laugh. I thought this movie got a little preachy, a little "how do you do, fellow poor people?" at times. Yeah we get it, cheeseburgers are delicious. But do you know what else is delicious? Expensive food made by talented cooks! But the scary, twisted elements were all pretty solid, and although this movie gets super weird and nonsensical, it totally gets away with it because this movie is essentially a comedy. So yeah, obvio...

The Little Mermaid (2023)

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I don't really know why these live-action Disney movies exist. Does anyone truly like them? It's the exact same story with a few changes to the plot that don't affect anything, and all of the non-human characters look weird, including the mermaids. I mostly watched it to see if it would make any interesting changes other than making Ariel Black, and then ended up skipping boring scenes.

A Haunting in Venice

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Magdalene) I'm not hard to please when it comes to Agatha Christie stories turned into movies. This one is a bit darker in tone, with an older, tired Poirot trying to solve a murder in the dead of night in Venice. It's a bit spookier than other Poirot movies too, with ghosts and seances involved, but not too spooky for me to recommend it to my mom.

Game of Thrones (Season 7)

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by Joseph) Whew boy, this season is bad. People talk shit about the "ending" of Game of Thrones, which often refers to season 8, or even more specifically the last few episodes of season 8, but make no mistake, the show has fully come off the rails by 7. For some reason I thought 7 was similar to 6 in that it's got some strange ideas in an otherwise good season, but no, this season is a different show. It's all bad now. I was shocked to see how quick it falls off. It all essentially comes down to the writing, right? The actors are the same, the budget is increased, the directors didn't change... so why does this suck so bad? I could speak about the ridiculous plot points in this show, but it's deeper than that. The dialogue is so stilted and rushed, it's nothing but reunions and exposition and reminders of how these characters know each other. There are like twenty moments of two characters meeting and being like "you kill...

10 Cloverfeild Lane

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) It's spooky season baby, and this movie is first up. I remember always seeing the trailer for this one and thinking the idea was really cool. Essentially a woman finds herself trapped inside a basement, and creepy John Goodman says he saved her, and she can't leave his bunker because the whole world has been nuked and there are dangerous chemicals outside and they have to wait out the war before anyone can leave. But there's very little proof this is true, and it can't be verified one way or another, and while she really wants to escape, there are strange things happening that sorta make his crazy ramblings sound true... Anyways, fantastic premise. A real mind-effer where you really are trying to guess alongside her whether it's all true. We are given enough both ways to keep us guessing and it's all very dark and mysterious. Terrific stuff. But the highlight of this movie is what an incredible creep John Goodman portrays....

Ahsoka

⭐ 5.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) It's not a hot take to say that Star Wars is struggling, but here I am, watching another Star Wars show. Jess and I both really love Rebels, the animated show, and this is basically the continuation of where that show ended. It ended with quite a cliffhanger, so it should be easy to make a satisfying next season, but this sucked. I feel like this show tried to be like Andor, which is the only good Star Wars show. The opening episodes are so slow and methodical, and seem to try to emphasize world building. Well I hate to break it to Dave Filoni but drawn out shots and serious characters is not what makes that show good. The first two episodes are so forgettable, and any time they try to pull in politics it is so lame. A meanie senator not believing what we know to be true, oh no! I actually think this series would have been a lot better if it had been condensed. Seeing animated characters in live action is fun, even if Hera looks kinda funny...

Silicon Valley (Season 1)

⭐ 9.0/10 (Originally written by Tim) Revisiting this show and my goodness is it ever hilarious. Its about a dorky guy living in Palo Alto working for the Google equivalent who starts his own company and battles the big tech world for a chance at making the world better with his algorithm. Its a comedy and its on HBO, so the jokes are very crude and the language very colourful. Part of what makes it such a treat is how realistically it portrays that world, and seeing exterior shots of places I have been is always fun. But the actors are all great as dorky coders, each dorky in their own way, and Jess can confirm that you don't need to be a coder to laugh at this. I love Thomas Middleditch as the lead, but the star is Zach Woods, aka Gabe from the office. He's basically the exact same character, but is so kind hearted and wholesome in a cutthroat world. He gets so many hilarious jokes, I just love this guy so much. The season finale has a legendary scene that is this show...

Game of Thrones (Season 6)

⭐ 8.5/10 (Originally written by Joseph) *a few spoilers* Lemme tell ya, we are totally flying through this show, and I think that alone is a credit to how exciting things are. This season is undoubtedly not as good as earlier seasons, but it packs a ton of punch, especially at the end. Indeed, I daresay it's even better than season 5, which I think is an unpopular opinion. So, for the most part, the arcs are kinda meh here. Arya's is horrendous, which is a huge shame because I think Maisie Williams is really great, especially as she's really growing into her role by now. The Dany stuff is mostly boring and pretty strange. I think Tyrion's arc is totally under-baked, and he's kinda just saying stuff now. The Dorne stuff is bizarre. I hate zombie-Mountain. The Sparrow is pretty exhausting. Actually lemme take a second on the Sparrow. So this arc sucks, and I think that's pretty well agreed upon. However, i actually think it's a pretty good depiction of religio...

The Creator

⭐ 6.0/10 (Originally written by Beans) This felt like it could have been movie of the year. The visuals are stunning, they had a really cool, although not entirely unique idea, and I love John David Washington. However, it felt really flat, one dimensional, half baked, poorly planned, terribly executed (how many more ways can I say this). This biggest indicator was I just felt BORED. To be sure, my attention span is fried, but it was not gripping and it really could have been. The AI were sweet, and the Death Star knock off had cool features. The idea of AI really is so intriguing, but they did nothing of any substance. The worst part goes to the little AI girl, who, when asked what she wants, smiles and says “for all robots to be free”. I had to look down and take a second.
