I might say that this is the spooky season classic. This is an old Hitchcock movie (I think my first experience with Hitchcock?) and everything here will be familiar for anyone who has ever seen a movie, or ever been on the internet (especially if you listen to Bastille). And yet, this movie relies on lots of twists and turns, and they all surprised me! I really didn't expect this movie to go in the directions that it did, and the final reveal was a total, delightful shock.
I really loved this movie. With classics, it's sometimes hard to know if you love the history, the charm, or the movie itself. I unquestionably loved this movie as a movie. It was exciting, mysterious, spooky, and just overall a lot of fun to watch. No wasted moments, and I was hooked from the first scene. I also thought that Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) was outstanding. One of the great performances I have seen. I only found out after that people think he is the sexiest man alive (err... that ever lived?) which I find very funny, but I just found that character to be super compelling.
So that's basically it. This movie is maybe slightly unnerving at times, but I don't think anyone today would find it truly scary. The classic shower scene is the tamest murder I've ever seen, but maybe my brain is broken after watching Thrones these last months. But yeah, great movie, full recommend, but I can't give it a perfect 10 with that final exposition dump. Was that okay back then?! It was pretty jarring. Anyways, it's forgivable, but still this movie falls just short.
