Oh we just keep getting spookier this October! This is a movie in which a serial killer is at large, and so Jodie Foster is tasked with talking to another incarcerated serial killer (Anthony Hopkins) to try and get clues. I'd say this is one of the most celebrated, most universally beloved horror movies out there. It's dark, it's intense, it's grimy... but I never really connected with it.
I'm really not sure why I didn't love it, and it's one of those instances where I wish I liked it more. I liked it, to be sure, but I never felt much, and was kinda bored here and there. Anthony Hopkins gives one of the great villain performances of all time, reminding me of Heath Ledger's Joker, for instance, where he is the star compared to the vanilla hero. Jodie Foster was great, for the record, but her character kinda pales in comparison to Hopkins, though probably intentionally so. Also she is so bad at the basics of her job!
I wouldn't say this movie is terrifying. It's unsettling, and has some intense moments, but it doesn't overdue the horror stuff. It's really just a serial killer movie, and lots of conversations with very weird people. I can't say I'm big on serial killer movies, maybe cuz I already talk to so many crazy people every day. I dunno. I think I've just heard people say all the things Hannibal Lector says and I don't think they are genius...
Anyways, this is a good movie. It's everything you want from a horror movie that isn't campy. I am in the minority of people who've watched it and think it's just okay. So take for what it's worth.
