The Master

Paul Thomas Anderson may have cemented himself as my favourite director at this point. While I don’t think this is his strongest movie (or at least it’s not my favourite of his), it’s still a very interesting watch!

The strongest parts of this film are the acting performances, the cinematography and the dialogue (which is pretty typical of a PTA film). Honestly a little surprised that neither Joaquin Phoenix and Philip Seymour Hoffman didn’t win an Oscar for this one.

Where this movie lacks in my opinion is how the story progresses. It has a really great concept, that being the relationship between a struggling army vet and a charismatic cult leader, the movie doesn’t really go deep into any concepts. At times it feels more like a “day in the life” type deal, but the cult really doesn’t do anything interesting during the course of the film. Maybe I just don’t understand it, but I found the story to be surprisingly weak in this one.

Still, I did enjoy this one quite a bit. It’s weird, wild and made me very uncomfortable at times haha
