Barbarian

Watched this to round out my Cregger horror filmography. This one has a lot of similar qualities to Weapons and RE, a blend of horror and humour, lots of quick, snappy editing, and is a more a fun, campy movie rather than a grim or psychological one.

In this one, a young woman rents an airbnb but someone is oddly already staying there. The longer they stay, the more strange this house turns out to be until they discover more and more of its secrets. The other major plot point is Justin Long, who plays a complete scumbag, owns the place and heads over when he wants to sell it. There is a scumbag in each of Cregger's movies and they are always my favorite, always played for guilty laughs.

Yeah, this one is terrifying! Again I think it strikes that perfect balance of being light and funny enough, but really pushing boundaries with the horror too. It will make you feel sick to your stomach at times, and the payoff is plenty disturbing. As I do with most horror movies, I felt like I wanted to rate it lower because of how nauseated it made me at times... but that's the whole point of these! I knew that's what it would be going for, so mission accomplished. I went in blind and the surprises were really great.

That said, I don't think this one was as good or as tight as his others. Specifically with Weapons, that was a great movie that got better as we went along, but this one felt like it was getting too zany and silly. The ending is pretty electric, it really just doesn't make much sense, and if you start thinking about the start of the movie then things no longer add up.

But still, a great spooky classic, and I'll be watching whatever Cregger puts out.

The Philosopher in the Valley & My Reflections on Leaving Palantir

This book was perfectly timed to my paternity leave, a time where I was not actively working and could reflect on my job. The post will be a short review of the book, followed by a much longer section where I will attempt to verbalize all my thoughts on Palantir. Thoughts on my time there, what I did and didn't like, and why I am leaving. I am not writing this as some manifesto. I have been explaining to a bunch of people in my life why I have been considering leaving, and my thoughts never feel coherent, the reasons change day to day. This is for myself to reflect, and I might even continue to edit it as I remember things. I thought this book was excellent, a biography of Alex Karp, but also a tale of Palantir's history. The author was around Karp for an extended period of time, providing a lot of details that even I did not know. It lays out all the Palantir milestones over the years, many of which I remember quite clearly, but hearing about it with a bit more distance is co...

My Favourite Books of 2025

By

I read a lot of books this year as usual, and spanning a ton of different genres and categories. That's pretty evident in my favourites as well, as I have a book or two from most of the genres I read, and I loved them all for different reasons.     Most of these will be repeats from some of my monthly favourites, but these are the ones that really stood the test of time! Here they are, in no particular order.      This fantasy book from an underrated author is about Maeve, whose hands were badly burnt as a child, and so she has lost the use of them. She has spent the last ten years with her aunt and uncle, who were healers, but now she's finally returning home to the family she barely knows anymore. She feels misplaced as they're still adjusting to how she needs to do things now, but she finds solace in her youngest brother and the stray dogs she adopts. When they all disappear into the forest one day, she goes after them, and adventures begin....

Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson

⭐ 5/10 For my first review I decided that I would start off with a tremendously average book by Brandon Sanderson, namely, Mistborn. I will try my best at not coming across as wildly pretentious in this review but I make no promises. Essentially, this book is a heist story set in a fantasy world ruled by a vicious, authoritarian god known as the Lord Ruler. In this world, people are segregated into two castes, the Skaa, and the Nobleman. We could spend a very long time going through the specifics of what is all involved in being in each of these two castes but the basics are that the Nobleman are the upper class, serving the Lord Ruler by being the pillars that stabilize the economy, and the Skaa are a slave population who carry out the painful (often deadly) labour to support the general industry of the world. Being a Skaa means harsh labour, intensive poverty, and random, mandatory executions perpetrated by the henchmen of the Lord Ruler known as Inquisitors. That being said, life a...
