The Mile Zero Murders

CBC got me again with a true crime podcast teaser posted to the Frontburner feed on a holiday. Something about these being in small towns near places I know is super interesting. This one is about Dawson Creek AB and this long chain of murders going on there. Turns out its all drug related, but the interesting part of this one is the relationship the journalist makes with a local drug dealer. The guy is an arrogant idiot, but has some amazing clips that they use, speaking very openly about the violence and drug trade. He compares himself to The Sopranos or Corleones, but he's an absolute mess. There's a moment when is grown up daughter dies from an overdose on fentanyl, and its fascinating to hear him come to terms with himself being the bad guy, indirectly or directly causing the death of his own child. And then, spoilers, he is eventually killed for speaking out to these journalists!

There is an interesting dynamic here, where everyone knows who the murderer is, but everyone is too afraid to tell the cops, because they see the guy walking around town and not in jail! The slow wheels of the justice system seem totally unjust when the guilt party roams free before enough evidence can be gathered, and the killings continue. They interview the police chief and he says speaking to journalists is very different than speaking to the cops, and while people are totally transparent to this journalist its interesting that no one really comes forward to the police.

At the end of the day the guilty guy is arrested for 2 of the murders, but that leaves 16 unaccounted for! He probably did them all, but again, its fascinating to see how untidy all this investigation is, and super slow. I liked that this is all very recent too, and people will come back and be like, ya I was threatened for what I said last time so I won't be speaking again.

Everyone murdered was caught up in this drug trade, but the podcast did a great job of humanizing these people. It's easy to be like, well just don't do drugs and you won't be killed! But all these people had complicated pasts, in a town with a history of addiction.

I won't be tuning in for all of these, but man these premiere episodes are just so engaging!

My Favourite Books of 2025

    I read a lot of books this year as usual, and spanning a ton of different genres and categories. That's pretty evident in my favourites as well, as I have a book or two from most of the genres I read, and I loved them all for different reasons.     Most of these will be repeats from some of my monthly favourites, but these are the ones that really stood the test of time! Here they are, in no particular order.      This fantasy book from an underrated author is about Maeve, whose hands were badly burnt as a child, and so she has lost the use of them. She has spent the last ten years with her aunt and uncle, who were healers, but now she's finally returning home to the family she barely knows anymore. She feels misplaced as they're still adjusting to how she needs to do things now, but she finds solace in her youngest brother and the stray dogs she adopts. When they all disappear into the forest one day, she goes after them, and adventures begin....

November Reading Favourites

This book blew me away, and that was after I already loved The Six Deaths of the Saint, the short story she wrote that inspired her to turn it into a full novel. Owen is a scholar of Dominion who studies the mythology of Saint Una Everlasting. He suddenly gets sent into the past to meet her and record her story, so he journeys with her to find the grail, knowing that in the end she will be betrayed. The central relationship in this book is gorgeous, filled with yearning and devotion. All of the characters and relationships are so rich, with fascinating character arcs. But I was equally entranced by what it was saying about mythology, nationalism, and empire. In my opinion, Harrow is just getting better and better.   This is what to read if you want a book about a magical school with dragons that is actually good and cares about its world-building.
