Pop Culture Jeopardy (Season 2)

A joy to see this back! All the same things as last season, a fun quiz show to watch with your partner, with a much higher probability of knowing the answers than true Jeopardy. A huge improvement here is that they went with teams of 2 instead of 3, so you still get a sense of the friend dynamics.

Jess and I have been watching Jeopardy almost every night, and that show is a masterpiece, as mechanically perfected as any show could be. 20 minute episodes with skippable commercials baked in, so probably actually 18 minutes. It is down to a science, the pace is so perfect, and its so easy to just crush 3 in a row and feel like you even learned something! That's where going back to Pop Culture was difficult - these games are too long! Like 40 minutes, and Colin Jost is funny, but having to interact with 6 people, as well as little jokes between some of the questions, I was just really missing the pace.

Then came the final, which they spread over 2 games, with a cumulative score. The one team had a crazy crazy win in the semis to get there, shocked themselves with some lucky betting in Final Jeopardy, so they had no chance in the finals, and they knocked out a clear favourite. And then the strongest team took a massive win in the first game of the final, and it felt completely over. You could tell they thought so too! I was ready to give this season an 8, maybe a 7.5, for the pace and crappy ending. But then there was an insane final game! I don't want to spoil but obviously there is an unprecedented comeback, we were floored. Easy 10/10 for that final alone, one of the most exciting episodes of Jeopardy I have ever seen. As satisfying an ending to any competition you can imagine, where you are ecstatic for the winners and heartbroken for the losers at the same time.

If you are looking for a way to go to trivia with your wife but can't ever leave the house, this is the show for you. Relevant, and although you could argue knowing this trivia is useless that doesn't stop it from being fun!

My Favourite Books of 2025

    I read a lot of books this year as usual, and spanning a ton of different genres and categories. That's pretty evident in my favourites as well, as I have a book or two from most of the genres I read, and I loved them all for different reasons.     Most of these will be repeats from some of my monthly favourites, but these are the ones that really stood the test of time! Here they are, in no particular order.      This fantasy book from an underrated author is about Maeve, whose hands were badly burnt as a child, and so she has lost the use of them. She has spent the last ten years with her aunt and uncle, who were healers, but now she's finally returning home to the family she barely knows anymore. She feels misplaced as they're still adjusting to how she needs to do things now, but she finds solace in her youngest brother and the stray dogs she adopts. When they all disappear into the forest one day, she goes after them, and adventures begin....

November Reading Favourites

This book blew me away, and that was after I already loved The Six Deaths of the Saint, the short story she wrote that inspired her to turn it into a full novel. Owen is a scholar of Dominion who studies the mythology of Saint Una Everlasting. He suddenly gets sent into the past to meet her and record her story, so he journeys with her to find the grail, knowing that in the end she will be betrayed. The central relationship in this book is gorgeous, filled with yearning and devotion. All of the characters and relationships are so rich, with fascinating character arcs. But I was equally entranced by what it was saying about mythology, nationalism, and empire. In my opinion, Harrow is just getting better and better.   This is what to read if you want a book about a magical school with dragons that is actually good and cares about its world-building.
