Obsession

This movie definitely isn't for me. "But it's like Get Out, a thriller with some horror elements". Nope this is pure horror. A guy wishes a girl would love him, and she becomes possessed with an obsessed demon. I wasn't completely terrified, but I watched the last 30 minutes through my fingers.

I do think the acting here is incredible, and Inde being cast as my girl Rogue made me decide I had to check her out. Her and Michael Johnston were incredible in their own ways, and probably the reason this movie has been so insanely successful. She is freaky and weird with crazy facial control, and he is a down right loser. I will say he's maybe a slight bit too good looking to be this big of a loser, but the incel energy is crazy strong here. In the era of "male loneliness" this might be showing why some guys should actually be alone. There is this incredible scene where the real Nikki shows up (happens a couple times, always to great effect), and he has this tremendously selfish line that I could not believe, delivered so pathetically. That was the moment of the movie for me, its reason to exist, and I thought it perfectly captured the desires and mindset of the toxic guys you read about online. I almost thought he would redeem himself a bit in the end, but he's a coward, and the final frames are pretty uncomfortable to sit with.

In hindsight I could probably watch this again and not be scared at all, since most of the big moments are jump scares. Some pretty gnarly stuff, but so over the top it was hard to be haunted by it. Its very strange to me how viral this movie went, since I'm not sure its breaking any new ground, but I think both these actors are going to be huge, a really cool launch pad for them.

My Favourite Books of 2025

    I read a lot of books this year as usual, and spanning a ton of different genres and categories. That's pretty evident in my favourites as well, as I have a book or two from most of the genres I read, and I loved them all for different reasons.     Most of these will be repeats from some of my monthly favourites, but these are the ones that really stood the test of time! Here they are, in no particular order.      This fantasy book from an underrated author is about Maeve, whose hands were badly burnt as a child, and so she has lost the use of them. She has spent the last ten years with her aunt and uncle, who were healers, but now she's finally returning home to the family she barely knows anymore. She feels misplaced as they're still adjusting to how she needs to do things now, but she finds solace in her youngest brother and the stray dogs she adopts. When they all disappear into the forest one day, she goes after them, and adventures begin....

November Reading Favourites

This book blew me away, and that was after I already loved The Six Deaths of the Saint, the short story she wrote that inspired her to turn it into a full novel. Owen is a scholar of Dominion who studies the mythology of Saint Una Everlasting. He suddenly gets sent into the past to meet her and record her story, so he journeys with her to find the grail, knowing that in the end she will be betrayed. The central relationship in this book is gorgeous, filled with yearning and devotion. All of the characters and relationships are so rich, with fascinating character arcs. But I was equally entranced by what it was saying about mythology, nationalism, and empire. In my opinion, Harrow is just getting better and better.   This is what to read if you want a book about a magical school with dragons that is actually good and cares about its world-building.
