Alone (Season 6)

⭐9.5/10

This is often regarded as the best season of Alone, and after jumping around in a few seasons I think I'm inclined to agree. It's mostly your standard fare, which is always amazing, but also includes the single best contestant to date in terms of what I have seen. Hyper competence is always a joy to watch, and every single thing this guy does works out. In a game that often turns out to be a starvation contest, this guy looked like he was about to survive the winter with food to spare and could have lived indefinitely out there.

So that's pretty well the entire review of the season. There are other things I'll quickly mention, but essentially this is a standard season with the exception of a guy who was amazing at this, and also a fun personality to watch. They are at Great Slave Lake, which is WAY up north, so it was an interesting season though I'd honestly prefer if the locations were a bit more hospitable. Survival is hard enough!

One highlight I'll mention is that the first episode features an asshole who kept going on about how there were hippies in this game thanking trees for their life, and how stupid that was. He was just annoying and ignorant, and luckily we didn't get much of him because he broke his knee the first episode! What beautiful poetic justice, this dumb, cocky tough guy wailing in pain a scene later. Should have prayed to a tree! And then in contrast, the most hippie character makes it super far because she loves nature and understands her place in it.

I will also point out that this season had the most discussion on the mental strain of survival, how something must die for you to live. One character has a breakdown because he kills a squirrel that he had been greeting every morning. Another character suffers because of her inability to callously kill a squirrel she knew she had to kill. I love this show because it's so much more than an endurance reality show, but speaks so much to what makes us human.

Otherwise, I wasn't a huge fan of a few production decisions, such as never introducing us to the contestants, and it took me a good 5 episodes to get my who-is-who bearings. There was also no post show which is sometimes my favorite episode.

But overall it was a wonderful season that I always wanted to watch and I can't wait till Jess allows me to choose it again.
