Saturday Night Live (Season 51)
⭐ 7.5/10
The best season in recent memory, but still I show I mostly pan through. A highlight was Jost as Pete Hegseth and Aziz Ansari as Kash Patel, I love how biting and mean they have become about these idiots running the country, as they should be! Jost plays that macho frat energy so well, and if I was Pete I would lose sleep over this portrayal. There is Trump every week, which is exhausting, so their energy is a welcome change.
I thought there were a ton of standout sketches, like Matt Damon as an auctioneer in a failing marriage, or the Olympic luger who is afraid of it, or Josh O'Conner with my guy Ben Marshall as sensitive male strippers. I love that Ben Marshall is part of the main cast, and while I miss the Please Don't Destroy trio their energy lives on in him. I hope he gets a bigger role going forward.
Ashley Padilla is clearly the MVP here, and they use her in everything. She has this wacky crazy energy, but her facial expressions and attempt to have a calm exterior work in basically anything. A lot like Kristen Wiig, and I hope they let her expand what she does going forward.
As I have probably said before, Weekend Update is funny, especially when they do they thing where they write jokes for each other, but their constant laughing at their own jokes has annoyed me for years, and its only getting worse. Che constantly reacts to the audience reaction. This is supposed to be a fake news show! The characters die when its clear this is just a bunch of one liners they are delivering. Their dynamic is cute but it ruins the edge, and often the jokes are very edgy! I love that they can say these dark things and just move onto the next headline, pretty bold comedy but with too much sugar on top. The update appearance from their in house Tucker Carlsen was hilarious, but...
SNL loves to beat a good thing to death. Domingo isn't even funny and they have done it 10 times. Tucker was a hit, so they have him on the finale deliver the same thing basically beat for beat. Drives me insane when they redo sketches. The finale had Will Smith do one of my modern favourites, this weird high school theatre director, and the sequel just stinks, all the exact same jokes. Seems so lazy, and this has probably been going on since the birth of the show, I just hate it.
I'll never quit you SNL.
