Bluey (Season 3)

⭐ 10/10

This is still basically the only kids show we watch, and this final season was tremendous. The same still holds, I love the animation and the voice acting and the compact episodes, but there were a couple episodes here that have become trademark episodes in this house.

There is one about contractors (tradies) who come to build a pond in their backyard, while the girls spy on them. We had contractors in our house at the time we saw this and Ezra was obsessed with the episode, we watched it every night for probably a month and I still never got tired of it. Seeing everyday things through the imagination of kids is the power of this show, but weaving in intrigue for the parents is always present.

There is another one about their aunt coming to visit, and its clear she doesn't come very often. The reason for this broke my heart, something relatable to many adults in our life, my heart just aches thinking about how Bluey's mom explains to the kids why its hard for her to visit. The aunt gets a nice sendoff in the finale, maybe too tidy, but its super cute. Similar to when the kids get a new baby sitter, and the episode doubles for her meet-cute for her eventual boyfriend.

Which brings us to the finale, which is based around a wedding (always a good way to bring all the characters together), and the devastating news that they are selling their house and moving. I felt ready to burst into tears for the whole extended runtime, as their dad equated moving with a better job and a better life for his kids, while the kids and mom mourned leaving their home and the life they had built behind. It is so well told, and seeing these young kids (dogs) that we have come to love process something so real was devastating. I originally thought the episode ended too nicely, but in hindsight it perfectly encapsulates a series that is based on fun and play and making memories with loved ones. The final scene is (spoiler) a flashforward, and as silly it is to write this I was in tears seeing these dogs aged up with a growing family. They have become part of our family!

These characters are so precious and wholesome, and we will probably be rewatching this for this next couple years. It really is a beautiful show for kids. Laughs and silliness and lessons with true artistry and creativity in every episode. I'm completely cynical of anything made for kids, but it makes me happy there is genuine entertainment for kids that is not trying to sell something. There is still good in this world!
