⭐7/10

This is a zombie movie that came out in 2002, and I think that's super important to note because this is the most average, cliche zombie movie ever made, and yet that is actually a praise rather than a criticism because this movie kinda inspired the media that came after. Zombie movies were mostly dormant at the time, and this revitalized the genre and brought us the Walking Dead, Last of Us, World War Z, etc.

I should add that I love zombie movies. I watched all of the above and loved them all. I love Post Apocalyptic stuff and all of its implications. I will always be down to watch stuff like this. But this movie has the same opening as The Walking Dead (like literally, TWD completely ripped this off), and the movie could be any episode of the series. There is absolutely nothing added to the genre that I wasn't familiar with, but again, that can't really be held against it. Still, I was not moved by anything.

The bigger issue is that this movie is absolutely horrendous to look at. I guess there were some issues with digital conversions, and it is possible to watch this movie in a way that looks okay, but with modern streaming this movie looks like it was recorded on a Nokia phone from 2001. I can't emphasize how bad this movie looks. It is hardly watchable. I watched the Dollars Trilogy made in the 60s and the image quality is way, way sharper in those. The sound is not much better, with ambient noise going silent all the time and stuff like that. Brutal, from an audio-visual.

Even so, it was still a fun watch. I would probably give it a 6/10 on just my enjoyment, but I will acknowledge these circumstances were far from ideal. Honestly, probably a 9/10 or so if I watched in 2002 (except I was a child? So 0/10?), and I'll land on a score somewhere in the middle.

Makes me pumped to watch the sequel tho!
