White Lotus - Season 3

What a year of TV, am I right friends? I have been very up and down on this show. It's about rich people being bad with different themes emerging throughout, but I liked season 1 all around, and then thought season 2 was just too annoying to watch because it was impossible to root for anyone.

But season 3 is back! In a way anyways. I thought it straddled that line of annoying vs funny a little better this year, with plenty of people with both redeeming and terrible qualities. It came a little nearer to painting these as complex, interesting people, though they are always completely over the top. The most normal characters are either incestuous or Republican (which one is worse btw) and people are all plotting to kill each other or themselves. 

I thought episode 5 was a masterpiece, and all the attention that Goggins and Sam Rockwell have gotten was well deserved. I thought the season was headed towards a 10, but I, like Tim, thought it lost a little steam on the way out. I guess that's kinda the point -- money can cover up all sorts of ills, and consequences don't exist for rich people -- but I can't say I was super into the finale. 

Anyways, it was still a great season that I looked forward to watching every Sunday night. I thought it had a lot of interesting, funny things to say, and said most of them effectively. But aside from that, it was just good from an entertainment perspective alone. Good give actors good lines, drop them in beautiful locations that are beautifully shot, and then turn the music up to 11 at all times and you will have a success. Making TV is easy! 

Also Gaitok was so pure and is arc so maddenly perfect. MVP!

⭐ 6.5/10 (Originally written by Tim) Watched this for the first time because we wanted a comedy, and it was fine. I laughed a couple times, mostly at Paul Rudd, whose character was amazing. Otherwise its just a 2000s raunchy comedy. These Apatow movies are way too long for comedies, and the feel-good endings take too long to get to. I liked the idea of a fake NBC show that Kristen Bell stars in, and those clips made me laugh. Jason Segel is fine, and he fits the depressed guy thing they are going for here. Look at that cover! This is a YA horror book written by a trans Canadian author that knocked my socks off. A small town has secrets it's trying to hide, and after the death of a boy and a newcomer arriving, things start slipping out of control. It's a book about being trans or queer and living in a small town, and how a community creating a facade of a perfect town can backfire. Also maybe closing your eyes to anything that's "not your business" is not good actually! It's violent and full of rage, and I loved the way it played with time and perspective. Check the triggers, but if you're interested in reading it, I'd recommend going in blind without looking at reviews or a longer description! This is a short book of essays about ableism and disability justice, specifically relating to technological advances for disabled people. In 2024 I read another ABSURD amount of books, and I will not be commenting on what that says about me, my decisions, or the state of my mental health. So I'm just going to go straight into my favourite books of the year!
