Silo (Season 2)

⭐7/10

This is a TV series that I kinda like while acknowledging that it has serious flaws. I said the same for season 1, and I think the second season has the issue even worse; the highs might be higher, but the flaws even more glaring. It's a terrific mystery box of a show, but the writing is so incredibly weak that it kinda ruins the whole thing. The budget is there, the costumes are great, the setting looks terrific, and the story is genuinely engrossing. But man, when I am rolling my eyes at lines by Tim Robbins or Rebecca Ferguson or Iain Glen or Harriet Walter, then you know you have a problem.

This show has all these terrible writing quirks that I hate. There are multiple speeches about class solidarity in the start, and they are lame every time.
Young rebel: "The leaders don't care about us!"
Audience: "But what about the children? You are risking our children!"
Wiser, older rebel: "Ha ha ha. This is so classic. This is what the leaders want! Us arguing with each other! We need to stick together!"
This exact speech happens like 6 times and they made me want to kill myself.

The other one is:
Friend: "look, I know you've lost a lot, but you can't just leave us."
Other friend: "you wouldn't understand..." *Starts walking away*
Friend: "Wait... Wait!"
*keeps walking*
Friend: "I know where your son is!"
Other friend freezes. Slowly turns around. "My son?"
Again this happens like every episode. There are other ways to get someone's attention!

Anyways, it's just lame, amateur stuff that keeps me from fully enjoying the show. I feel like it's a network show that is masquerading as prestige television, kinda like Lost, or Smallville or something. It has all the goods, and can be genuinely great at times. But there are too many puzzling, awful moments.

One thing I thought was very interesting is that our hero finds out that the solution that the good guys are working towards will kill them all. I thought this was very interesting, lots of friction, but the show doesn't exactly capitalize on that unique setup. Maybe they will explore it more later, but I thought it was a cool idea where again the execution wasn't great.

Otherwise... I dunno! I'm still a bit torn on this show. This is a super negative review, but like Rings of Power, I felt something redeeming in it, having similar issues. I liked some moments from Common and Chianza Uche and Iain Glen, probably my favorites. But I think the two main characters were the worst, with just puzzling performances for actors of their caliber. I think a massive issue with Ferguson is she can't stick to a damn accent and just doesn't sound like a gritty undergrounder.

That's a lot. But there was this absolutely killer flashback scene at the end that made me have hope for this show. Two good actors, good lines, and an intriguing plot. I will still be seated for season 3.
