Endurance (2024)

⭐6/10

This is a recent documentary about both the Endurance expedition that happened over 100 years ago, but then also the expedition to discover it's long-lost remains in the Antarctic, which happened a few years ago. It's one of my favorite stories and this movie features my beautiful history king Dan Snow (a definite pattern emerging with my man crushes), so I obviously had to watch it.

It's all pretty good. Absolutely nothing new if you are familiar with the story of the Endurance, and then not a ton of depth into the rediscovery expedition. Nobody (besides Dan Snow) is especially likeable, and hey, they find it, so good for them. A perfectly serviceable documentary, and probably even a pretty good one for those unfamiliar with this story.

One thing that stood out to me was that they had some lines from the old crew, and the lines felt pretty stilted and weird. But hey, it's old recordings, so I'll forgive. But at the end they tell us that the lines are AI reproductions of those voices?? What? Why?? Couldn't they find literally anyone to just read the lines? AI needs to absolutely stay very far away from my movies, and in this case it does nothing but make it worse. So yeah, I'm taking a couple points off this documentary for being anti-art. Shame on you, Dan Snow, for allowing this to happen. I trusted you. Paul Hollywood would never.
