Father of the Bride

⭐ 6.5/10

10 minutes into this movie I thought I was going to be a weeping mess through it.  A daughter comes home, announces she is getting married, and the dad can't stop seeing her as a child.  Literally he like opens his eyes and sees a child talking to him then blinks and its his adult daughter again.  I'm a new-ish dad and even though I have a 1 year old boy the illustration was powerful and had me in its grips.

But from there is just made me angrier and angrier until the final scene which I was actually shocked by.  His daughter is a spoiled brat who wants the most expensive ridiculous wedding ever, and her dad is just forced to bend to her every wish.  He is very wealthy, but also trying to be reasonable, but the daughter and the mom are just like, if you really love her will you really quibble over all this? They don't budge an inch or give him any breaks, it's insane, the prices just keep getting higher and every joke is around the dad resisting until he finally gives in.

To make matters worse, the wedding comes around and he has a miserable time!  He doesn't get to spend any time with her, and is worn out by the end because he's running around making things happen, but then she's gone and he smiles because at least she loves him.  Are you crazy!? I can't believe this movie is a classic because its propaganda for the wedding industrial complex and the message is that no monetary price is too high for your loved ones.

There are some funny Steve Martin moments for sure, and as I said every once in a while it can crank up the emotions. There is so much potential here for a good movie with a good message but it goes completely commercial and thinks its being funny. It made me so frustrated, and I can't imagine anyone watching it without feeling that way. Maybe it was at a time when dad's were learning to be more sensitive to the wishes of their family, giving up control, whatever.  But this was an unhealthy movie I will forbid any future daughter of mine from watching. Just kidding.  But actually, I felt sick to my stomach thinking of little girls watching this and thinking how loving daddy is because he buys me everything that makes me happy.
