Step Brothers
⭐ 7.5/10
These early 2000 comedies can be tough to watch, not only because lots of the language is completely disallowed now, but because so much of it is funny because it was funny when you saw it the first time. I was already a man the first time I saw this, and I think a bunch of the dialogue is really hilarious. Where the movie looses me is when it gets into physical comedy - them fighting or sleep walking. But still, I think this movie is a gem of the raunchy comedies of those times, and it still makes me laugh.
The concept is great, and the poster is iconic. Both these stunted man-children are so ridiculous and so stupid its hard not to laugh. For me the standout is always Adam Scott - he is so hateable in this movie and every scene he is in kills me. The car singing, the treehouse abs, the bragging at the table, just perfectly written and performed to make you want to punch him. Dane Cook, pay-per-view, 10 minues, LET'S GO!
I think my favourite line is in the first couple minutes, when Dale says the thing about the old bull and the young calf, just kills me. I think the parents are really good and knowingly frustrated and I like their dynamics with the kids. Kathryn Hahn jumped out to me this time as a hilarious performer. She is very much one note in this and only wants one thing, but she is so funny. Not good enough to make me care about Agatha All Along unfortunately.
Pretty stupid humour, but inside I'm just a boy who can still laugh at silly gross things. I do think there's more to this movie than that in both the writing and in concept, but its hard to call it a masterpiece when your wife isn't laughing.
This movie had me thinking, what's the funniest recent comedy, let's say the last 5 years. I feel like they don't even try to make things like this anymore. Maybe its because there isn't a powerhouse like Will Ferrell, but this movie was a huge hit and they really just don't make them like they used to. Maybe times have changed and we are all too sensitive. Sound off in the comments.
I also think most of these movies are TV shows now
