Prometheus

⭐ 7.5/10

This movie had been on my watchlist for a while and only now, with a new Alien movie coming out, did I realize this was part of that universe. I liked Alien, and even watched the second one, but I had no idea that this movie franchise was so huge. There's a million of these!

I liked this one pretty well. It sticks to the formula pretty hard, and that's mostly fine, but I do feel like these movies are trying to one-up each other with the shock value. One of the things I loved about the original was that it was pretty balanced. It has this hyper-realism, so when things start going crazy, you really feel it. There are gross parts, and they are shocking precisely because they are so few. In this movie, there are several super disgusting scenes. I like disgusting stuff! But this felt like a little much.

They also seem to want to explain Alien universe lore a little too much. Again, going back to the original, it's all very mysterious and vague. You don't learn much, and that's kinda the point. I feel like trying to expand this universe kinda defeats the purpose. I don't want much background, I just want people trying to survive scary aliens.

That's a lot of negative, so I should say that the premise was pretty cool. I still love this dark, grimy atmospheric stuff. I also really liked David, played by Michael Fassbender, as a robot with feelings. He kills that role, and is unfortunately one of the few characters with any personality.

So yeah, I guess we're in Fall now so it's okay to watch scary movies. This was a good one, though I'm not sure where I'd recommend it among the series.

  1. For some reason I watched this in theaters and got to see the birth on the big screen! I actually thought it was great, David was the highlight. It was written by the guy who did Lost, which feels right.
