Moonrise Kingdom
⭐7.5/10
I just don't know if I like Wes Anderson. My feeling is that his style is cool and unique, but would make much better short films than feature length. He's just too strange and the style kinda wears me out by the end. I do really love it at times; the sense of symmetry in all the shots, the snappiness and rhythm of each scene. I'm glad there are unique filmmakers like this, I kinda just wish he toned it down sometimes. We get it, you're quirky!
Because I did really like this movie. I loved the two main characters, both giving great performances, and the finale made me feel some things for sure. There were some great jokes, but for a comedy, I didn't actually laugh all that much (this has been true for all of the Anderson movies I've watched).
One last thing is that they kinda sexualize the kids and it made me feel uncomfortable. Nobody else seems to have mentioned it, so maybe it's not a big thing, but I just imagine the direction they had to give these kids behind the scenes and it makes me feel yucky.
Anyways, all that considered, I wished I loved this movie more but I must admit I'm just not a huge Anderson fan. He honestly just seems too in love with his own style, like he has to constantly remind us that he made this. Nobody else makes movies like this, which is a cool quality, and it's impossible to ignore the artistry, but also maybe it's for good reason.
Also did not love this. The little boy is all grown up and super active and annoying on Twitter now.
