Jurassic World

⭐ 6/10

I just randomly rewatched this by myself over a few nights because I think these are the perfect summer movies. I love the original movie, and liked this enough when I watched when it came out in theaters.

On rewatch, I definitely think this movie mostly sucks. To start, I was pretty sold. I actually love this idea, where there's an entire island that works as a resort, and I thought they did some cool things with this. The rides and exhibits felt oddly tangible and really well thought out. I thought there was some cool stuff about corporate growth, nature versus nurture, the ethics of all of this. Nothing too crazy, but enough to keep me interested in a summer blockbuster.

From there, I thought there were serious issues. First off, it's weird to say but this movie looks super dated. Maybe I'll have to go back to the originals, but those practical effects from the 90s look way better than this 2015 CGI fest. This movie doesn't offer much more than a cool spectacle, so if that's lacking, there isn't much to praise.

I also thought the writing was terrible. I am actually one who still really loves Chris Pratt (maybe there's some personal-life stuff that people don't like? I can't remember) but he was awful here. He's way too goofy to be in such a serious action-hero role, and all his lines sound like they belong in the trailer.

Unlike the original which is almost this intense horror movie, this movie kinda devolves into a Godzilla movie where they set up these silly creature fights. While I enjoy those, it's kinda a weird matchup between a good villain and a hero we don't see until he's in the fight. But the bigger issue is that like a lot of these Godzilla movies, they don't ever really get the tone right. They sometimes want to stick with the horror vibes, but also want to make it sillier and campier and are afraid to commit to one or the other. Like, the climax is so preposterous, they think the way to deal with a dinosaur that broke loose is to let loose a lot more dinosaurs... Whatever.

Anyways, this is a lot of words for what is mostly a mindless summer movie, and although I didn't hate it, I think I'm mostly  disappointed that they almost had a good movie here.
