Star War: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker

Wow, what a disappointing end to the marathon. Not only is this a terrible movie, but it is a terrible way to end a trilogy. I don't even fully blame JJ, because he was given an impossible task, but what on earth was he thinking. "Somehow Palpatine returned" is an iconic line and will be studied by screenwriters for generations. 

So there's actually some things I liked. The return of Palpatine is completely stupid, but I actually loved his portrayal as this grotesque undead god. His voice made our livingroom shake, and he's so creepy. I never gave Ian McDiarmid credit for his amazing performance across the series, but I loved every second of him. This is a way different performance, but I liked it.

Similarly, I liked the depth Rey had here, or at least what was hinted at, starting in the first movie. There's no great reason for her turning to the dark side, and really, it's never in doubt, but her shooting lightning out of her fingers and killing Chewy was a chilling scene (the is later undone). I wish that could have been explored a bit. 

Lastly, Babu Frik. There is even a good scene were 3PO is like, ah, he's one of my oldest friends. I think that was the only moment of intentional humour where I laughed. 

Now to the bad. I'm not going to get into everything because there's too much, and it's been explored a lot, and honestly who cares because this movie is irrelevant by now. But yeah, what an absolute failure of continuing this saga. Everything Rian built up was instantly undone because Disney let incels bully them into making a bad movie. It's not just retconned, but it was almost like the directors were arguing with each other over the big screen and made the audience watch. It's a fight everyone lost. Like, Luke catching Rey's saber to undo the moment where he throws it away was so lame. Couldn't JJ and Rian work out their differences behind the scenes? 

Anyways, otherwise this movie is a soulless, humorless 2 hours of lame fan service. There is not an original idea in this movie. The writing is awful. The few moments of tension are instantly undone. Also Rey and Kylo kiss in the end???? 

So stupid. Even the name is stupid. Rise of Skywalker? Let the past die!

    I think the line "let the past die" is what caused this. Disney makes money off the past!

My Favourite Books of 2025

    I read a lot of books this year as usual, and spanning a ton of different genres and categories. That's pretty evident in my favourites as well, as I have a book or two from most of the genres I read, and I loved them all for different reasons.     Most of these will be repeats from some of my monthly favourites, but these are the ones that really stood the test of time! Here they are, in no particular order.      This fantasy book from an underrated author is about Maeve, whose hands were badly burnt as a child, and so she has lost the use of them. She has spent the last ten years with her aunt and uncle, who were healers, but now she's finally returning home to the family she barely knows anymore. She feels misplaced as they're still adjusting to how she needs to do things now, but she finds solace in her youngest brother and the stray dogs she adopts. When they all disappear into the forest one day, she goes after them, and adventures begin....

Mistborn - Brandon Sanderson

⭐ 5/10 For my first review I decided that I would start off with a tremendously average book by Brandon Sanderson, namely, Mistborn. I will try my best at not coming across as wildly pretentious in this review but I make no promises. Essentially, this book is a heist story set in a fantasy world ruled by a vicious, authoritarian god known as the Lord Ruler. In this world, people are segregated into two castes, the Skaa, and the Nobleman. We could spend a very long time going through the specifics of what is all involved in being in each of these two castes but the basics are that the Nobleman are the upper class, serving the Lord Ruler by being the pillars that stabilize the economy, and the Skaa are a slave population who carry out the painful (often deadly) labour to support the general industry of the world.
