Saturday Night Live (Season 49)

⭐ 7/10

I have been watching this show for probably 10 years, but I never watch it live.  The actual live show is so long, and there are enough bad sketches that it is brutal to watch live.  However, they have been putting up every episode on YouTube for quite a while now, so its very easy to watch the first minute of a sketch, the quickly pan through it if its not good.  That's probably why I have never reviewed this show, because I watch it as a series of short clips.  But that's what media is these days!

Anyways, while each episode has a bunch of stinkers I think this was one of the better seasons in recent memory.  I don't love Weekend Update, Che in particular always laughing at his own jokes and talking to the crowd, but the segment where they write jokes for each other is always hilarious.  Allows them to tell awful racist jokes but its funny because they are making the other do it. Aside from them the cast is pretty strong, and it seems like they gave the newcomers more reps than they usually do.

There were some great guests this season, like Chalamet, Emma Stone, Ayo Edebiri.  Shane Gillis was someone I had never heard of, but funny how when they get a comedian to host its usually amazing.  There were a handful of sketches from his episode that were the best of the season. Ryan Gosling continued to be a star on the show, and while having Pete Davidson and Kate McKinnon back was super boring Maya Rudolph continues to be a delight.

There were some other stinkers too. Sydney Sweeney was just terrible, not an ounce of funny. Ramy Youssef? Meh. Jason Mamoa, also bad.  Probably worth mentioning that I never watch the musical guest portions, which is a big part of the show that I couldn't care less about.

So ya, pretty typical for this show I guess, lots of misses but a couple hits that kill me.  I always love when they spoof commercials, and the Please Don't Destroy guys make some funny shorts. Hard to recommend this show because it requires sifting through garbage to find the gems.  But again this is the best its been in a while.

  1. I am on the record saying that there isn't a good SNL sketch and there never has been. I think one thing that makes it unwatchable for me is the live audience. Makes me feel like I'm watching Friends (which is a bad thing)

    1. I think laugh tracks in scripted shows is bad, but in a live sketch show setting it feels more normal, barely even notice it.

  2. If someone put together a compilation of the good parts once a year or so, I would definitely watch them - but as is I never do.
