This movie was getting lots of hate online, and I think people need to relax. Its a kids movie. I wouldn't say its among my favourites at all, but it had 2 catchy songs, Chris Pine was fun as a voice actor, and the animation was kind of interesting. It was doing this thing where the backgrounds were almost classic paintings, and then the modern animation playing in front of it, even the way it was lit made it look a bit like a stage or something. This is also a movie meant to celebrate 100 years of Disney, so it made me think of the hand animation with a still background, which is cool.

There are a bunch of neat little easter eggs around this history of Disney, which get less hidden and more obvious by the end, but it is still a nice little nostalgia hint. Jess was sleuthing out things she recognized, which added a fun layer.

Ariana DeBose should play Michael Scott in the reboot since she is my current queen of cringe (although what makes it cringey is that she isn't joking). She voices the lead here, which means some great singing but some annoying dialogue. I know she's just the actor and didn't write it, but whatever.

The story here is actually super weird. The plot is that people move to this kingdom so a sorcerer can keep their wishes safe, and then grants a couple wishes a year, but when he takes your wishes you forget about them and lose a piece of yourself. I guess the idea is that wishes rarely come true anyways, so why not have them kept safe just in case the king wants to grant you your wish, and forget about it if not. Well this is clearly nefarious and when the protagnist starts to question it its like, yeah, why has no one thought this could be bad. Seemed like a forced way to work in wishing on a star and other classic Disney things. Brutal story choice, and leads to the lamest movie ending I can remember.

I've already written more than I intended. I say we shouldn't hate on kids movies but I also lost my cool over the Mario movie because that's sacred text ok? This was cute and fine and I'm sure kids love the talking goat that mentions farting like 5 times.
