Pokemon the Movie 2000
⭐ 7.5/10

I should clarify that both this and the first movie I watched with my nephew. I definitely wouldn't say these are healthy for adults to watch alone.
But this one is actually good! I swear it! Okay, again, definitely would be a 0 for non-fans. But for fans of the franchise, there is plenty to love here. Again, the animation/art/music/voice work is all classic and nostalgic, and in my opinion the best it ever was. 90s Pokemon is wonderful. Team Rocket also comes in and is good for like 4-5 laughs. I am also impressed that this movie (and the show) are translations because they rely a lot on word play. So A+ to the translators.
But the movie is actually not bad! A good premise: a rich, evil collector going for the ultimate trophy, only to get the unintended consequences of throwing the climate out of whack. Some nice stuff with prophecy, tradition, etc. and then I think Lugia has a sweet design, and a really enchanting sound. Make him like a blue whale? Genius! The whale sounds are perfect for a dark, mystical movie.
I just thought this movie was a clear step up. They definitely feel more like extended specials on the anime, and not quite like feature films, and it certainly made me wish Pokemon would spend lots of money to make great movies (unique casts, different eras of history, different target audiences? Even Detective Pikachu was a start, but it needs to be animated!). But anyways, this was nearly the end of the decent Pokemon movies, and I'm glad I watched with Sam.
