Pokemon: The First Movie
⭐ 6.5/10

Fun fact about this movie: as a Pokemon lifer, I'm not sure I've actually seen this movie. I wasn't allowed as a kid, and I don't think it's ever been on a streaming service. However, I did read the novel adaptation like 50 times in the school library.
Anyways, this movie sucks. Does that make me relieved to know that I didn't miss out as a kid? No! Because I would have loved it as a kid! It's incredibly melodramatic, with Mewtwo being that ultimate emo, but this is what kids movies are all about. Mewtwo literally doesn't have a normal line in this movie. It's all super *deep* and philosophical. It actually seems like a emo highschool kid wrote this. Destiny, enslavement, power, determinism. It's all here baby!
So yeah, I could say this movie tries to do way too much in its 74 min runtime, but who really cares. No Pokemon fan can truly say bad things about this. I think the art is beautiful, but that might be the nostalgia talking. The pokemon battles look cool, the action is sweet, the music is awesome. The idea is also just really great: they found a DNA strand of a mythical pokemon, and tried cloning it with improvements to make the ultimate fighter. They succeed! Except this Pokemon grows sentience and wants to take over the world...
MVP to Team Rocket. I was always annoyed with them as a kid, but as an adult I think they are the best part. Truly funny. The incompetent villain trope in cartoons never gets old. "The things we do... To catch Pikachu."
Okay I'll mention just one more bad thing. The climactic action event is all the Pokemon fighting, which horrifies everyone because of the unspeakable violence, except the whole thing happens with a happy song in the background. Truly the most bizarre choice in cinematic history.
Alright, I've officially put more effort into this Weview than the creators did into the movie. To summarize: masterpiece. For fans only, don't watch otherwise.
