The Fault In Our Stars

I have a very complicated relationship with this movie. Watching it now as an adult, I can admit that it is not great, and has not aged well. However, there is an incredible amount of nostalgia attached to this movie and novel that I can’t really look past.

In hindsight Ansel Elgort almost ruins this movie, but I tried to appreciate him as Augustus Waters and he had his moments! Way too cheesy and over the top, with all his metaphors and longing glances. I loved Shailene Woodley as Hazel Grace though. I thought she was very endearing. But mvp goes to the friend Isaac. However, this movie essentially plays out as a Hallmark movie.

And yet, it had me crying and sniffing the entire way through. I read this book shortly after my own brother passed away from cancer and it was all too much. I remember this book and movie completely taking over my life for a period of time and I think that will reflect my score the most.

Shoutout to Laura Dern as an awesome mom and the dad who I don’t know but was such a fox. I think this movie was inspiration for a few movies since, and the closest one I can think of is Me, Earl and The Dying Girl which is a masterclass in story telling and I can’t recommend that enough.
