I've always been a little unsure about this movie. I love alien movies, and this one sure is spooky, building up in a really cool ways. But it also has a lot of serious philosophical stuff and some pretty serious melodrama that I'm not sure I can tolerate. I'm pretty sure it's very cheesy, but Mel Gibson and Joakin Pheonix do a pretty great job and have it toe that line.
The first half is pretty good. Again, nice and spooky, and gave me nightmares as a kid. My only complaints would be that the girl acts like a possessed weirdo for no reason at all, and also any time CGI is used, it shows its age very poorly. But it's still terrific as a moody thriller.
The second half is not quite as good. It gets a little campy, and little self-serious, and the bad CGI is out in full force. Still some pretty effective stuff, and the tie-ins are kinda nice even if they are a little forced.
But overall, the Neufeld kids were driving me crazy on vacation with how paranoid they all are, so I made them watch this movie and I don't think they slept that night. So yeah, mission accomplished.
