Succession (Season 4)

⭐ 8.5/10

No fresh takes from me on this one - this was possibly the best show on TV the past couple years, and it did an excellent job making you interested in the plight of terrible people. This season is no exception, and I think a couple of the best episodes of the series are in this season. It does a great job ending the story, with high stakes moments and its trademark bite.

I have raved about the show a bunch on here, but I think this season had a bit more frustration in it than prior seasons. The number of times characters switch sides is infuriating, and I can't keep the alliances straight anymore. All the way up to the finale I constantly am trying to figure out character motivation, and the double crossing was too constant to be effective. I will never understand the turn Shiv makes in seemingly 8 hours of the finale, but boy was it dramatic.

Same complaint with the business dealing. I feel like every episode a dramatic deal is made, and then next episode its like, wait, was it? What makes a deal official to these people I will never understand, and part of that is probably intentional, nothing is permanent or satisfies these people. I think this has been true throughout the series, it just wore on me a bit by the end.

For as scathing as this show is, it has tons of genuine humour, and while this season wallows in its own filth it continually makes me laugh. Greg and Tom are used sparingly but to great effect, and honestly I could have used more Connor.

I do think this is one of the best shows of the past decade without question, but at the same time I doubt I will feel the urge to revisit it like I do and have with other shows. It is punishing, and I honestly wanted a more devastating finale, these people getting what they deserve. Maybe a bit of unhappiness is enough, and I'm glad it didn't go full "eat the rich". I will miss this show, and can only pray that more shows come along with this level of acting/writing/directing/etc. Don't forget the all-timer theme song! Shoutout to Roman, my fully broken boy, and to Greg's cherubic smile as satan claims him for eternity.
