The Sign for Home - Blair Fell

⭐ 8.0/10

(Originally written by Magdalene)

Arlo is a young DeafBlind man who hires a new interpreter when he decides to take a college class. Cyril is nervous about his job, but can't help but get involved in Arlo's life as he learns more about his past. It's a book that's both heartwarming and sad, as Arlo has gone through some difficult things, with a super religious uncle as his guardian and little possibility of making his own decisions. It's a great book for understanding the experiences of DeafBlind people, and I learned a lot about autonomy and advocacy for disabled people. The author isn't Deaf or blind himself, but has been working as an ASL interpreter for a long time, so I'm guessing and hoping the representation was accurate.

If anything, this book reminded me once again that it should be normal for all people to learn at least some ASL.
