I loved Knives Out, and I loved this. I'm glad it got it's moment on the internet, and glad Blanc is becoming a more recognizable character, and I'm glad that we'll probably get more of these. I think they are expertly done and the perfect mystery/ comedy formula.
But is it even a formula?? I think what this movie did, as well as Knives Out, was shift your expectations so rapidly with unique twists that you're often wondering what you're even trying to solve. This one has a unique storytelling method and I totally dug it. They know the audience is trying to guess who did it, so keeping us on our toes is always a lot of fun. My brain was working overtime trying to keep up, trying to question what was a key detail vs a throwaway line, etc.
And that leads me to my next point. There are no throwaway lines! I think they do an awesome job incorporating a million little details into the final solve, bringing you back to things you'd already forgotten or thought had no significance. Being a comedy works great for this because half the things they say you think are silly little jokes, but no! That too will be coming back into play.
Just an awesome, smart, entertaining movie. This has a lot of that internet humor that usually I hate, but I thought it really worked here because it was maybe more self-aware, or maybe because it literally said it was based in May 2020. Lots of good characters to laugh at in a time of Elon and Andrew Tate. Everything really worked for me.
