Out of My Heart - Sharon M. Draper

⭐ 8.0/10

(Originally written by Magdalene)

Melody is back, and it's summer break after a bit of a rough year. But Melody is determined to try something new and go to summer camp! This book is essentially Melody just trying new things and making friends and having a great time at camp. She gets to meet other kids in wheelchairs and who use speaking machines, and really connect with them. And maybe even have a crush! It was super heartwarming, and although the dialogue didn't always sound authentic for 12-year-olds, I had a good time. I have read some criticism on the disability rep that I can't really negate myself, but at least for myself it was good to be in the head of someone who can't always control her body but has a sharp mind, and is super positive despite her limitations.
