Stranger Things - Season 4

⭐ 7.0/10

Had a bit of a tough time coming up with a final score for this one. On the one hand, this show continues to be a fun cultural experience. I thought this season was more fun than 2 and 3 and I really was all-in to start again. The way they build up tension and mystery is always great, and I always love when it becomes the kids vs the world again. It really made me wonder if I'd underrated the other seasons. And then there are the highlights like the the Kate Bush scene and you think this is just an altogether awesome show.

But man, basically beginning after that Kate Bush scene, this show has some serious problems for me. I think the biggest issues revolve around the show needing every character to have their moments in equal measure. A lot of this is focusing on truly boring events, like the whole Eleven flashback stuff, or giving the Pizza Van crew boring side quests. I don't need an episode about Susie getting access to her dad's computer! I don't care about Susie!

And then this wraps up in the finale which was the corniest, most painful TWO AND A HALF HOURS of tv of my life. Why why WHY do we need sixteen heart to heart moments in the finale. Will and Mike, Will and Jonathan, Jonathan and Nancy, Nancy and Steve, Eleven and Max, Max and Lucas, Eleven and Hopper, Hopper and Joyce, Dustin and Eddie, Dustin and EDDIE'S DAD!!?? These scenes are terrible! Who wants these? And then the truly cringey scene between Mike and Eleven via telepathy, and then the 30 times they replay that ONE time Eleven and Max hung out. Man oh man I have never wanted an episode of TV to end more.

This show has gone completely crazy, and it seems like nobody likes these characters as much as the creators. There were still some highs in the later episodes (the Eddie metal scene was sweet) but it was all overshadowed by the two hours of poorly written heart to hearts. I'm glad they are continuing on with the same plot next season, but it really is hard to get excited for it at this point. If they made the second last season this sappy, I can't imagine what the finale will look like. I imagine right now they're working on a way to get an emotional scene between, I dunno, Lucas's younger sister and the Russian guy.
