The Return of the Prodigal Son - Henri Nouwen

Henri Nouwen was a Dutch priest, professor, and theologian. He taught at some really prolific schools before he went to go work at L’Arche, where he spent the last 10 years of his life. You just know this guy was the real deal. Smart, humble, single! All the makings of a great man.
This book was incredibly encouraging. Nouwen once saw a picture of a painting by Rembrandt about the prodigal son and felt his life shift after that. He went to Germany to see the real painting and he says his life was altered. His admiration for this painting made me consider if art has ever affected me that much, and also how important art is in our lives.
He splits the book into 3 parts: the younger son, the elder son, and the father. He deep dives each character, talking about the context and the meanings behind the story, while also sharing his own personal stories about relating to these characters. His conclusion is really insightful and I’ll just share it here: “I now see that the hands that forgive, console, heal, and offer a festive meal must become my own. Becoming the father is, therefore, for me the surprising conclusion of these reflections on Rembrandt’s The Return of the Prodigal Son.”
This book just really spoke to me. I know that’s cheesy and all but I really do believe God moved and is still moving through Nouwen and his writings. I was encouraged and humbled, and couldn’t help but feel joyful and overwhelmed with gratitude at the thought of seeing God as a welcoming father with his arms wide open, always calling me home. I often feel like the prodigal son and this book really just made my heart leap. A great first read of 2022!
