A Marvellous Light - Freya Marske

⭐ 7.0/10

(Originally written by Rebecca)

I was super excited to read this book when I heard about it, as a queer, plot-driven fantasy mystery about magic in 1908 England. So many things I like! But in the end it wasn't really my thing, mostly because the romance didn't progress the way I was hoping. I like historical romance for one thing--the YEARNING! And this book barely had any of it 😔 It all took place over like 10 days, and everything moved way too quickly for me to really get into the relationship development. The magic and setting and mystery WERE good, and I understand why everyone loved it, but it just wasn't for me. I also just never felt that eager to keep reading after the halfway point. But I did finish it, and it was good! I'm not sure if I'll bother reading the sequel, but only because I don't generally care for established relationship stories. Also, if you're going to read this, be aware of the multiple, detailed sex scenes. And don't listen to the audiobook, I didn't care for the narrator at all. Bad choice.
